The Vampire Diaries returns tonight with its highly anticipated mid-season premiere, and we know that many of you have been dying to discover what's next for our favorite Mystic Falls residents. Luckily, after enduring countless heart-breaking episodes, it seems like things are finally looking up in the romance department between Damon and Elena. ETonline sat down with TVD star Ian Solmerhalder and co-executive producer Caroline Dries at the TCA Winter Press Tour last week to get the scoop on what's next for the star-crossed vampires as they navigate through their newest jaw-dropping obstacle: the awkward first date. Throughout the first half of Season 6, Damon and Elena have been forced to fight for their love. They're not just getting their happy ending handed to them on a silver platter. And despite the agony, it's creating a "worth the wait" type of scenario. And when ETonline caught up with Somerhalder, this was an observation that the 36-year-old-actor wholeheartedly agreed with. "Actually that's a really awesome observation," Somerhalder said. "They haven't just been handed this. In the past we've fast-forwarded through a lot of the cool, gushy parts that you would typically see in a new love story, so I think that Damon being in this space of who he loves genuinely gives him a sense of purpose." "When an audience sees that sense of purpose in Damon, I think it makes them very happy. And I enjoy it as well," he continued. "And I think that the one thing that [fans] can expect again, because it's The Vampire Diaries, for every minute of screen time of happiness, you're going to have five minutes of drama, f—ked up, and people trying to kill us." Fans were devastated at the end of the mid-season finale when Damon and Elena were this close to rekindling their romance — only to discover Kai's wicked plan to steal a magically invisible Elena away from the Salvatore house. "I knew the fans would hate that and I'm so happy that they did," executive producer Caroline Dries said with a laugh. "I just remember when we thought of that, it was perfect — let's just ruin everyone's hopes and dreams and let's add mistletoe to make it even worse." Calm down, Delena fans—don’t' be grabbing those torches and pitchforks just yet! Dries promised that there's a bigger plan in the works and the outcome will be worth this tortuous wait. "I always want to say [to the fans], 'Trust me. We know what we're doing. We know what we're doing.'" And what they're doing is setting up a side of Damon and Elena's relationship that viewers have never seen before: the adorable dating phase. "It's more of that courting period of, 'Do we go on a date?' 'Where would you want to go?' the EP explained. "When you see Damon be a normal, human, twenty-whatever-year-old, it's refreshing and fun, and what we don't normally get to see." Dries teased that Delena fans should get ready to feel some "butterflies" as Elena attempts to re-fall in love with Damon. "As they re-connect — she's been compelled to forget that she loved him —those feelings are still in her," Dires said. "So it's like what do we do? We don’t just jump into bed together. We're going to be normal so, 'Should we go out to dinner?' It's like the fun kind of boring stuff that you would never want to tell but now it's interesting because we've never seen it before." Somerhalder spilled that he believes it's "important" for the Damon and Elena fans to focus on the positive side of things. "That glimmer of hope usually turns into some really gnarly things but it's a give-and-take," he said. "I think that there's some really great stuff coming up, some great Damon and Elena stuff." Bonus Scoop: For those fans who are wondering if Damon could have any deep-seeded romantic feelings for Bonnie, Dries was quick to shut that thought down. "I think it's a deep profound friendship that he even doesn't admit is a friendship," she said. "I know there are a lot of eager Bamon fans out there, but for now no. His eyes are on Elena 100 percent."

Really? No comments on the episode people? I admit it was kind of boring and NOT DE, but.... Ok, here are mine ... they are not very favorable though :-( I did not really like this episode very much, honestly. Most of the characters were being pretty stupid about something or other. And also some plot points are just hurting my brain. Vampire blood makes you die from cancer quicker?? Are you freaking kidding me? That is the most ludicrous idea they have put forth yet, and that is saying something! Not to mention, um, if you die with vampire blood in your system you become a vampire ... so, if they are actually going to try and make us believe that this guy is just dead? That is just plain bad writing, on so many levels. And even all that aside, really Caroline? You do an "experiment" that has your mother's life hanging in the balance, and you don't even consider the fact that you should maybe wait 24 hours AT LEAST to really see how that guy does? JUST IN CASE??? How completely idiotic are we supposed to believe she actually is?? And Stefan too! He couldn't even SUGGEST to her that they wait a few hours to be sure? I mean really, that whole storyline was just awful. Just plain awful. And Liv and Tyler's little "fight" was also ridiculous. I just don't get that girl, she makes like zero sense 90% of the time. What the heck was she even mad at him for? That was so stupid. And also boring, I just don't care about them as a couple at all. And everyone involved in drugging Kai and bringing him to Rick's house are all completely brain dead morons. You have him drugged and captured! KILL HIM FOR GOD SAKES!!! No one there thinks this is completely stupid? No one??? Not Damon, not Elena, not Alaric, not Jeremy, not even Jo is stopping to wonder if maybe this is a bad plan? Why can't Liv and Luke just tell their coven to go shove off? I mean it sounds like Luke basically did that anyways this episode, so what is the deal?? This is so stupid, it just hurts me. Now, on a positive note, I mostly enjoyed the Delena moments. And yeah, Damon was ridiculously hot this episode, which was great. But I thought that scene with him pulling the splinters out of her chest and her pretending she was about to die was really stupid. Who does that?? That just made no sense to me. And what a crazy pants laugh she had afterwards ... seriously, for a second I thought she was losing her mind or something. That was very weird, I didn't like it. And in general, this episode really did not do much of anything to move the plot forward. It was mostly pretty boring. And yeah, like I said, so many characters making really REALLY stupid choices ... just, not a fan of this episode :-(

I just got around to watching the episode this morning since I wasn't able to catch it live in time. This was a bit of a build up episode in general as far as Liz's fate, Enzo's slow and steady plan, the twins rebelling against their father, the inevitable Jo/Kai showdown and of course Delena's limbo relationship.
Though now that I've read the interview above, I feel much more secure in Delena and the writers not screwing it up. CD/JP seem completely aware of how Delena is coming off all angsty and how the fans reacted to the almost reunion scene, they even went out of their way to make the scene bad on purpose for added effect. I still hope the writers aren't waiting for the exact last episode of the season for Elena to get her memories back, but I do like that we finally get to see Delena being cute, normal, and awkward on a date. We always see them in these extravagant, life or death, supernatural moments so it's great to see these 'awkward firsts' we've never got to experience with Delena before.
Also major pluses to Dries, completely shooting down Bamon. This means there's no planned OOC storylines in the works to somehow make Bamon romantic. If Delena has to fight tooth and nail to be together, brave all these trials/roadblocks, basically as the article puts out, not get their happy ending handed on a silver platter. Why the heck would Bamon be given a free pass and more?
So yeah I'm very glad that CD just came out and put the hammer down quick on that one, if Bamons still keep their hopes up, its their own fault if they get frustrated and fed up.

Bamon is not happening. Damon has Elena on the brain only. 100%. I told ya. I just wasn't worried. She evens added Damon cant even admit his friendship with Bonnie. Now to the episode.... I agree with you Mystic. Although I liked the epi I was scratching my head like "Are these people idiots"? Caroline- As we are watching said cured guy at the vending machine I was like..... GIRL GIVE IT TIME! But they just left! I guess in the vampire world wounds are healed immediately so she felt this tumor or cancer was a wound and healed him immediately but it's not a wound. It's a disease so it's different. It's in your tissues/blood etc. It's not just gonna heal up a gunshot wound. Or heal up a banged up head like in Elena's brain damage case. I don't know why they would even throw the vampire blood out there? I mean I would think you'd have to stick a syringe into the brain with the vampire blood. Like into the tumor itself to shrink it? But just feeding blood? Nope. And then she gives her blood to her mom. I don't wanna say bye to Liz but I think we have to. But I have a suspicion that Liz will become a vampire. Or it's wishful thinking. Twins- You both are idiots. Can you just merge so Liz will die and her brother can leave my screen? Okay. Thanks. Bye. Kai- I agree Mystic. KILL KAI! WTF is Jo thinking? Remember they were like I'm gonna kill Kai and Jo was like "you cant kill Kai"...... I was thinking why the F not? he wants to kill all of you! What is wrong with you idiots! And you have Kai drugged up on a couch and as much as I loved the DE scene we are talking about dates? I mean come on Damon he just tried to kill Elena. Kill that mofo and kill him NOW! What is wrong with him? Enzo- You are dumb. Hot. But dumb. What is the point of you? I do love your Irish accent and dark features and you can coo me to sleep anytime but my gosh you are useless and your "revenge" is stupid! Sarah Nelson (Salvatore)- Beautiful girl but the part should have been given to me. =) Things I liked- Kai. He was so interesting and scary. he freaks me out hes so damn creepy. When he showed her the body it reminded me of Harry Potter when the teacher is floating above the table then Voldermort kills her and tells the snake to eat her. I don't know why but it did. And I also liked DE scenes. I actually thought it was funny when Elena was acting like she was dying. I think it was cute that she felt comfortable to joke with Damon. It showed her layers peeling. I loved their date scene. As much as I was like why are you talking dating go kill Kai I still loved it. And Damon was GORGE in this episode. I wanted to lick my flat screen plenty of times. But it would have been better if I got a shirtless scene of some kind. Next episode looks better. More promising. We should speculate on ways to get Elena's memories back. Will it be through magic, a kiss, a trigger??? Will Kai suck out the compulsion?

There were a lot of good lines in this one. It wasn’t exciting but it was entertaining, I enjoyed it - mostly because I was excited for TVD to be back! Liz - Loved the beginning scene with her and Damon. She has been the one person that he has always been good to and he has truly considered his friend. I’m gonna miss their interactions. I’ve come to really like Liz and she has been the stable parent this whole time. Kai & Elena - • So crazy Kai - he’s got some power doesn’t he! How amazing was it when he just snapped her neck by twisting his hand, wow. • Love the subtle references that remind you he was last out in the world in 1994, like Ricki Lake, lol. • “Don’t waste your time trying to change me”. Very interesting. Does that mean we can’t count on Kai being redeemable? Is he that far gone? He always gives us a little and then takes it away. I know that Chris Wood surprised them in this role and although they said villains won’t last beyond their current season, I’m thinking that even if Kai dies somehow (either in the merge or after), they will bring him back S7. At least for a little bit. • It took 3 people and the element of surprise to take him down at the school, that’s unnerving. But the merge is in a month so we know that he would at least get weaker - unless he keeps syphoning magic from other witches. • So, they’ve got him tied up at Ric’s and I’m still not sure why they can’t kill him? I know the coven wants one set of twins to merge, but is this necessary? They have already waited 20 years longer than they were supposed to because the first set of twins didn’t work out, so is this really relevant to the coven anymore? • And do we really think that with all that magic, Kai is gonna be able to stay tied up when he comes out of it? Are they gonna have someone watching him 24/7 and pumping him with new drugs every so often? Cancer patient - It was nice to see him up on his feet for at least a little bit. He got to eat some junk food one last time I totally knew she should have stuck around for a day to see what happened to him. That was “too easy”. I wonder though if he will wake up in transition or if that will be the end of him. I suspect if he wakes up in transition and the same thing happens to Liz, she’ll choose not to turn just like Bill. Damon - Hello hotness!! He was very mellow this episode and there was a softer side to him. I love how he was everyone’s friend yet still let it be known that they annoyed him with his usual commentary. I thought his conversation with Ric was nice that he just gave him this one. Damon gave his opinion about Jo and left it at that. If they go down for Jo not being strong enough, this one won’t be on Damon. Dalaric - At least they are back to drinking! The shows best bromance is making a comeback!! Matt - His one part was our foreshadowing of his role to come. He is tired of “death and danger by supernatural” and I think they are going to gear him up to do something about it, like take Sheriff Forbes’ place. I’m thinking whatever the series finale is leading to, he’s gonna rid the town of the supernatural. Delena - Their moments were cute, the longing looks and such. I’m ready for them to go on their date and see how that goes. I thought the splinter in the heart prank was cute but a little awkward too - that laugh reminds me of the same laugh she did when she was a new vamp and started laughing all crazy with Stefan because her senses were heightened and she didn’t know how to handle it. I didn’t like it then either BUT it does show how she is warming up with her relationship with Damon. I think they are trying to show us another side to them other than all sexy. Sarah Salvator (Nelson) - um, can we say gorgeous! They need to pair her up with someone (Matt!). Not sure where this thing with Enzo is going yet, hoping he doesn’t retaliate against her just to get at Stefan…. Liv & Luke - Well, now we have learned why Liv thinks Luke is stronger. That’s all I have to say about them Enzo - I’m sorry, wtf is going on here? Jury is still out on Enzo and my love for the character is dying a slow death so they better figure it out. Favorite one liner: Damon: Step one: letting them turn my house into Hogwarts.

As for Sweet's speculation on Elena's memories, I guess we can go ahead and elimate Kai/magic as it seems his intentions were simply to test his powers on a healing vampire I guess. And unless a witch comes in and does TO style reverse compulsion magic, then magic seems a no go.
I can see a combination of a kiss or trigger (especially since we know there's another upcoming rain scene). Though I want to lead more towards the kiss. I guess you can call me cheesy lol but I like the whole feel of a kiss 'breaking the spell' and it wouldn't be the first time Delena has defied the 'universe' so to speak.
With this whole memory loss arc, Delena haven't kissed all season, even in an spontaneous oops I didn't mean to way. I feel the writers are saving the kiss for a special occassion. I also wouldn't put it past the writers for us to get a 'first kiss' to go along with our awkward firsts theme. While I wouldn't remind a reunion kiss, if Elena got her memories back, she'd kiss Damon anyways because she's already in love with him.
I'd like to see this Elena, who only has the bad memories of Damon, fall in love and kiss Damon. It's just nice to experience Delena like this, focused on solely each other and not worrying of Elena being in denial for the sake of triangle drama of earlier seasons.

Two questions:
Does Elena have a bit of her memories back? Because when she went across the border we got that whole memory roll scene - does that mean she got some bits and pieces? If that's the case, I think she is beyond "just the bad parts" of Damon. She's got to know some good things at this point, right?
Also, did anyone like Elena's hair (as "Elena") in 611? I felt it was a bit done up and Katherine-esque. I guess I'm so used to Elena's hair being straight.

I suppose she has 'seen' some bits of her memories but whether she got any feelings from them I guess we don't know since she never said she did. I used to hate Elena's straight hair but at least she seemed "Elena' back then, ya know, so I agree with you. Even thought Katherine is gone, I don't think Elena should adopt her hairstyle because it makes us all think of Katherine still. I also thought it was weird that she got called 'crazy pants' as that was Damon's nickname for that other doppelganger of hers...

My cousin brought up something interesting about the vamp blood cancer thing (I sort of asked him the question about it out of nowhere after describing what happened with Caroline and the patient lol).
In a sense the vampire blood did heal him as far as the physical attributes of the cancer, tiredness/motor skills etc but it did nothing for the cancer cells because it was recognized as a normal cell, sort of how the immune system has trouble distinguishing the cancer cells from normal ones and why antibotics fall flat. Vampire blood tends to speed up the healing process so it likely sped up the process of the already fast generating cancer cells.
My cousin also mentioned that maybe it could cure cancer if the blood was 'aware' and knew that cancer cells were bad/disease/infection but it likely got passed over as a normal cell.
Also despite my cousin I myself am medically illiterate and terms/processes like this fly over my head lol so I'm not sure if I typed what he said correctly and if it even makes sense. Though the show could go with a different explanation for it so who knows.
