It was very sad! This was like Season 1 all over again when Damon erased Jeremy's memory of Vicki dying and also gave him a better personality? I barely remember, all I know is it worked out pretty well, and at least he stayed in town! Now he's supposed to go to Colorado and live with "family friends" and drink beer and hook up with girls and take an art class. Poor Jeremy! That being said, I'm not sure I buy this. First of all, Jeremy would've had to have been a moron to not have gotten all vervain'd up immediately after his near-death experience. Secondly, it's been more than suggested that he's kind of a natural born vampire hunter (crossbow stuff, that time he invaded Katherine's tomb, etc.), so an ordinary teenage existence is no more possible for him than it would be for Elena. My guess is that he's just pretending to be compelled, he'll take a few episodes off, regroup, and then return with some kind of surprising agenda. Same thing happened to Tyler last season and Bonnie the season before. It's kind of a TVD tradition at this point. Come back soon, Jeremy! Also possible (that he went and started back up on vervain) and a good idea/route for him. He's shown he's got the talent for it and it is a family thing for him so despite Elena wanting something different for him, he may want to actually take this route like his parents did (and as someone else pointed out, he kind of jumped head first into the whole Supernatural stuff when he suspected it with Anna).
I probably need to watch earlier seasons before but I don't know how the eyes are supposed to react when you're being compelled. I didn't see anything happen with Jeremy's eyes but could have just been me.

Always thought there was a reaction on both ends. So there is honestly no telling if it works or not until they do something that doesn't coincide with the directions given. So they can think Jeremy left town but he's actually staying there waiting for the perfect time to come to the rescue.

But why would Jeremy pretend to be compelled and leave Elena? He did say he wanted them ALL to leave.
I think that part of him wanted to leave and that's why he didn't fight the compulsion. There was an air of weariness around him. Though this kinda contradicts my first point.
Elena knows what she risked in compelling him. But as Damon said, estranged it bad, dead is worse.

Because it's Elena. If he had stayed around or didn't fake the compulsion, she'd be on him until he left/she got her way. If he just 'leaves' and sticks around with them thinking he's gone, he frees them up to focus on Klaus and not worry about him but at the same time, he can be there if help is needed. That's if he wasn't compelled though. They may want him to live a normal and he may as well (although the supernatural stuff interested him) but I don't think he wants to if it means leaving his sister to such a mess. All they've got is each other and I think it's better they stick together if anything. She may think he's safe but it's Klaus. He could have someone follow Jeremy out of town as I'm sure he is keeping tabs on Elena's only family member. Or Jeremy could get on a bus and that bus drives off a cliff and it'd happen just because they wanted to keep him safe by getting him out of town. EDIT: I feel weird having this conversation cause I've given Jeremy so much flak for not having a purpose/real direction and now that they're getting rid of him like I've wanted for quite a while, he's shown his usefulness and I want him to stay I think Alaric's situation may have also been a factor. They saw that the ring wasn't working as said and Alaric came back in a state that probably would have killed him had it not been for Damon's blood. I think that also pushed them to get Jeremy out of there cause they couldn't rely on the ring protecting him from Klaus or his Hybrids.

Yes, now would be the time for Jeremy to shine. There he was lobbing a head off a hybrid...go Jer! Plus Meredith is in town and at least in the books she was a vampire hunter so hopefully in the show as well. So she could have taken Jeremy under her wing so to speak since she's going to be dating Alaric. It's like this opportunity suddenly presented itself and they snuffed it out. I'm not sure if they have some big reason why Jeremy can't be around for a while but I would have liked to have seen him have a purpose and be a BA hybrid killing machine.

Poor showing by the Writers. Poor showing. Could that also be the case? Ditch Jeremy, bring in Meredith The Vampire Hunter/Nurse who has some experience and might have something more going on? Free up Jeremy's screen time for her (& Alaric)? We know the show has an issue juggling everyone and keeping them in the picture (look how Bonnie was in the episode and kind of just disappeared ).

I don't think more airtime for other characters is the case. If so, they would have gotten rid of Matt. He's not doing anything and wants no part in the supernatural. They wouldn't have gotten rid of an important character like Jeremy over someone like Matt.
I don't know what the writers have planned with Jeremy leaving town but Julie Plec seems secretive about it. She didn't really want to get into it when someone asked about Jeremy leaving town.
I hope he comes back soon. Maybe come back as a full out vampire hunter. I'd love to see that explored some more.
