I asked myself a few episodes ago why we hardly ever see the 'eye' thing anymore with Vampires. They really do seem to downplay a lot of aspects to the species =\ It's mainly the 'super speed' thing is all we get on a regular basis if that.
Yeah and Damon is not adverse to the random compulsion here and there, ie the girl at the party who grabbed the bottle of bourbon, Bill, Jeremy. But really other than that they did away with all the interesting aspects of what being a vampire is all about and I don't like it.
The allure to me with any vampire tale is not to humanize a vampire. It is to be able to adapt to and live with the beast/demon that is/dwells in the vampire while simultaneously the vampire adapts too but all we ever get is the vamps, a far superior race by the way, having to adapt which isn't even believable in any universe.
You're dating/have an interest in a Vampire and you know full well that they have a certain need. They shouldn't be trying to squash that or hide it from you when you know. You have to think that it's doing no favors for the Vampire either when someone is like that and thinks that their now 'natural' habit is a thing of a 'monster' so they try to repress it because of that.
I didn't like it with Stefan (which is why I'm now enjoying his wild streak) and I didn't like it when they started to do it to Damon so he could be someone Elena could look at without being disgusted. Both Damon & Stefan at one point 'embraced' what they had become. Not everyone is going to turn into Klaus or Stefan if they let themselves go. I would think part of the life would be learning some control (not killing everyone, not drawing attention to yourself, learning to live with the blood lust, etc.).
Too much is being downplayed however.
