Last Thursday’s episode was kind of a slow paced episode. There weren’t too many story-lines happening at once, not much action, it was more character driven but I liked it.
The episode starts off with Bonnie dreaming of the Original coffins. We see four coffins where, three of which hold the daggered Original siblings (Elijah + 2 more) but there’s a fourth coffin and Bonnie finds Klaus lying in it holding the Original witch’s necklace between his fingers. Interesting. At first I thought Klaus must have a twin brother lol (laughing at my own stupidity) but when I thought about the symbolism of the necklace and who it belonged to, I kind of piece together the idea that whatever’s in the coffin might be the answer to killing Klaus.
In the next scene we have Elena jogging and some creepy guy in a hoodie (who is later revealed to be kinda hot ) is following her. Elena is paranoid for good reason, it’s probably been weeks/ months since they attempted to kill Klaus and they’ve yet to hear from him. So they live in this constant state of paranoia and Elena thinks she’s losing her mind.
In the scene with Bonnie they’re both on edge. Bonnie tells Elena about the dream but dismisses it as nothing serious. I gotta say I missed seeing Elena and Bonnie interact. I love it when the show covers all the important relationships not just the romantic ones. Friendship is important, and I’m glad to see these girls doing what best friends do, confiding and supporting each other. It needs to happen more often.
We cut to the scene where Damon and Alaric are at the bar. Damon’s having “brunch in a bottle” and Alaric is grading history papers. Damon sure is lucky he’s a vampire his liver would have been ruined by now . Anyway I loved this scene not only because Damon is well Damon, but the relationship between Alaric and Damon is one of my favorites. It seems that Alaric is still a little weary about being too chummy with Damon, but he can’t resist. The part where Damon tells him if he drinks all by himself someone needs to get naked; Not gonna lie, I got all kinds of perverted thoughts of Damon and Alaric getting naked together until he winked at the bar tender. Anyway I think it’s obvious that Damon is still upset about Stefan’s “betrayal” so he copes the only way he knows how. Despite this scene being light one, my heart aches for Damon. He thinks his brother betrayed him and skipped town, and now he’s left with the responsibility of pretty much looking out for everyone, while waiting around for Klaus to make his next move. He’s all they have and they’re all he has, and it certainly isn’t enough to take down the Original Hybrid.
Anyway Alaric is obviously concerned about Jeremy, who plagiarized on his history midterm and has been fired from his job at the grill. Damon says “Someone’s getting grounded.” I love Alaric in this new father figure role he’s playing in Elena and Jeremy’s life, and their interactions are a big reason why I really enjoyed this episode.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
After Elena’s done freaking out about Jeremy, she and Damon engage in a little harmless flirting . She’s obviously concerned about his day-drunkenness and tells him it’s not his most flattering look. Damon wants to know what look Elena finds the most attractive, and Elena being the chicken that she is backtracks and tells him that she never said he had one, and then proceeds to tell him that his current look is her least favorite. So then he does have one or not? Elena can’t seem to make up her mind on this matter. I love this scene because Elena is essentially giving him one of her lectures, except it’s doesn’t come across as such because they’re flirting, but Damon gets the point and takes note to make improvements.
Surely Klaus interrupts their little moment, pretending to be hanging out with his “mate.” He’s obviously come to make Elena and Damon aware of his current predicament with Stefan, and doesn’t hesitate to get right to it.
Side note: Why does Elena always have to gasp “Klaus” whenever he shows up? LOL it happens every time. Seriously it’s like a knee jerk reaction with her.
Anywho, Klaus is going on about Stefan and his family and all that other gibberish, and telling Damon that his brother (Stefan) better return them or else.
What I love about this scene is how utterly protective Damon and Elena are of each other. When Klaus gets all up in Damon’s face about Stefan and the coffins, Elena tells him “That sounds like a Stefan and Klaus problem.” Meaning whatever issues he and Stefan have, need to be worked out amongst them. And when Klaus steps up to her, Damon gets right in between them, and the original hybrid can’t help but smile a little at these two.
In the next scene, Jeremy and Tyler are being boys, hitting beer? cans with big arrows and such. I also have to say I understand why some people like Jyler, the two of them have chemistry , but they both are obviously hetero, and have girlfriend issues, which is the explanation Tyler gives Jeremy for their sudden urge to hang out. Initially I was suspicious of Tyler asking Jeremy about Alaric and whether or not he likes him, I thought he was going to use it against him or something. Then Tyler starts boasting about his new hybrid powers and how hard it is to kill him etc. I knew the moment he said that, it was probably going to come into play at some part during the episode. I loved that Jeremy said Alaric would use it on him, if he ever found out he took the crossbow. Just like a father/son relationship.
Stefan follows Bonnie to the witch house, and asks for her help. Gotta admit, the way these coffins are hidden is pretty damn clever. I gotta say I was surprised to read spoilers of Bonnie helping Stefan of all people on his mission to screw everyone over and seek revenge on Klaus, but Stefan makes a compelling case. Whatever is in that fourth coffin could possibly be the answer to killing the Original Hybrid for good, and that’s really all Bonnie needs to hear before she reluctantly gets on board.
Back at the Gilbert house, Elena and Alaric disapprove of Jeremy spending so much time with Tyler due to him being sired by Klaus. Jeremy doesn’t think it’s that big a deal and even invites the hybrid inside for dinner. Really what were they even having for dinner, I didn’t actually see any food? Elena can barely mask the hostility in her voice as she questions Tyler’s loyalties. Love Elena, but she was in serious B**** mode in this scene, but she had some valid points. And poor Tyler he’s so clueless it’s actually pretty darn hilarious and tragic all at the same time. I laughed when he said if Klaus asked him to rip his own heart out he’d do it. So basically sired=compulsion. That’s the way I see it. He really has no sense of control; he’ll do whatever Klaus asks without question, without blinking. Poor Tyler in his later scene with Klaus you can see he’s very conflicted. On one hand he feels this incredible loyalty to the original but on the other hand, he doesn’t want to hurt the people he’s known all his life. If Stefan can fight compulsion, I’m willing to bet Tyler will give it the good ol college try when it comes to fighting this sired thing, when it really counts.
Need to comment on Elena and Jeremy in this kitchen scene. Now that’s a sibling relationship. I love how these two interact. They both call each other out on their crap, and they fight and bicker like brothers and sisters do. It’s a shame we don’t get to see more of their relationship, and after the events of the episode, we probably won’t for quite some time. Elena’s the protective and at times bossy older sister, and Jeremy is the younger brother who rebels at times just to spite her, but I also think he feels coddled at times by her, and wants to prove he can make his own decisions. I think Jeremy is stronger and smarter than Elena realizes (though he did have some not so bright moments this episode) but it was mostly due to compulsion. Either way I love their relationship and the writers better bring Jeremy back soon or I will rage.
>>>>>>>>>>>>
Then we have Damon having a drink before he’s interrupted by Klaus. They exchange some verbal blows before Klaus decides he needs to make it clearer to Damon, that he means business.
>>>>>>>>>>>
Next we have an obviously compelled Jeremy standing in the middle of the street, waiting to be run over by a car. Alaric and Elena notice this, and Alaric jumps in front of the car pushing, Jeremy out of the way. UGH. This scene slays me every time. How amazing is Alaric? There was no hesitation and no regard for his own life. I think this is one of the more selfless things we’ve seen on this show; it demonstrates the familial love in its purest form. They may not be related by blood, but they’re family and these are the kinds of moments that define it.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
After the Gilberts have successfully gotten Alaric in the house, Damon stops by to check up on things. I love that everyone calls Damon whenever there’s a crisis. He shows up and immediately questions Jeremy about his vervaine bracelet, which disappeared since he and Tyler have been hanging out. Damon notices every little thing. Is it weird that I really dig Damon/Jeremy’s relationship despite how obviously dysfunctional it is, and despite what Damon did to him in the past? They have this really weird relationship where Damon can be a total dick to him in one moment (i.e slamming his head against the car to get answers from Anna) and the next he’ll express so much concern for Jeremy as if he was his own little brother. I love it when these two interact, but mostly what I love about this scene is Jeremy’s little outburst about getting out of town. That’s the most sense he made all episode. Really how do they expect him to care about “grades” and “working at the grill” when their lives are in constant danger, those things seem really trivial in the face of everything they’re dealing with. And really when was the last time we’ve ever seen Elena doing any homework?? Last season she hardly even went to school, how did she manage to get passing grades all while plotting against evil original vampires and crazy doppelgangers. If the show was realistic Elena, Caroline Bonnie and everyone except Matt would be repeating the 11th grade. Just saying…
>>>>>>>>
Tyler approaches Klaus about his plans and his naiveté is quite astounding, or maybe it’s all the sired-ness talking. He never thought Klaus would hurt anyone (?) Seriously hasn’t Tyler been paying any attention to everything that’s been happening? Of course Klaus is going to hurt people! But alas we witness Tyler’s conflict, his conscience is still there and it makes it hard for him to see his friends getting hurt. Really want to see how this will end.
>>>>>>>>
Witches still hate Damon as he attempts to enter the abandoned house. (They better explain this, seriously).
Elena goes in instead and tries to reason with Stefan for the sake of Jeremy’s life, but he doesn’t budge. He doesn’t seem to care at all whether his plans cost her, the last blood relative she has left. Elena gives Stefan a well deserved slap and a “go to hell” for his troubles. I’m conflicted about this scene, I’ve watched it quite a few times just to really grasp it all but I’m still not sure whether Stefan seemed a little affected or remorseful about his decision to practically let Jeremy die in the name of his revenge. I want to say that somewhere deep down, he felt bad, but I’m not sure. Maybe this was one of those things to be left up to interpretation. I can’t imagine Stefan who went from caring about every damn person, became that cold, that fast. But we shall see.
When Damon fights his way through the house, and drags Stefan’s butt out, he gives him an ass whooping that only a big brother could. He wants to know why Stefan ruined his plan and he’s not happy with the answer that he gets. He doesn’t like the fact that Stefan spared Klaus to save his life. I think this has something to do with Damon’s own self loathing and insecurity; he can’t possibly fathom the thought of someone going through all that trouble to save him, as he doesn’t think himself to be worthy of it. Also it could have been that he would have rather died if that meant Klaus would be dead as well. I don’t think Damon is above sacrificing himself, it if meant that Elena would be safe, and Stefan would be free.
>>>>>>>>
Elena gives Klaus Rebekah and has once more demonstrated how much of a b*tch she can be when Klaus threatens her loved ones. She explains to Klaus that Rebekah knows that he killed their mother, pretty much shattering his hopes of a happy reunion with his family. She then tells him to let himself out when he’s done wallowing. I love Elena in this scene, because she’s just fearless. I like Katherine as a character, but when it comes to facing Klaus we’ve seen how much of a coward she can be, running and hiding in the shadows. Elena’s having none of it; she’ll dish it to Klaus just like he does to her. He’s taken so much from her already, so she fights for the little she still has. Physically she may not be able to do much, but she knows how to negotiate and she knows her enemy’s weaknesses it and she manipulates and exploits them to the best of her ability.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Later on, Elena arrives home and finds Alaric up and alive, but he’s not healed so he’s coughing up blood. Paramedics arrived but are compelled by the hot hybrid to leave. Hybrid tells Elena to invite him in to heal Alaric, but she refuses. Luckily Jeremy has his crossbow and aims at the hybrid from behind, only to get the giant knife and cut his head off clean. The blood splatters across his face and Elena jumps obviously traumatized by the goriness of it all.
I have mixed feelings about this scene because on one hand, I’m like HOLY SH*T go Jeremy! But it’s actually a really sad scene, when we think about who Jeremy is as a boy. This is the same boy who could only stand by helplessly as everyone of his family members were taken from him and cried on his sister’s shoulder because everyone dies on him. The same boy who when overwhelmed with grief tried to turn into a vampire to shut off the pain. He’s been through so much at such a young age and seeing him hack off someone’s head like that to protect the only family he has left just pulls at the heartstrings a little. Okay a lot, it makes me want to cry just thinking about it (yeah I know I’m pathetic.) I guess the point I’m trying to make is deep down he’s still just a boy and as awesome as it is to see him defend his family and save them, he really shouldn’t have to. It’s really quite tragic, and I think Elena realized she was losing her little brother when he so cavalierly walked into the kitchen grabbed a meat cleaver and chopped someone’s head off like it was just another day in the life…Well technically it is, but it’s concerning that he’s so desensitized by that kind of violence.
>>>>>>>>>>
At the hospital Alaric is magically healed and his Doctor Meredith Fell is surprised and quite suspicious. She asks him whether he has a guardian angel or did he make a deal with the devil and he replies a little of both. UGH! I love this so much, because it so accurately describes his friendship with Damon (who gave him blood btw). Being Damon’s friend is like having a guardian angel, because he’s fiercely loyal and will always come to the aid of those he cares about and he considers Ric his friend and they’ve been through so much together. But being Damon’s friend is not all just rainbows and butterflies obviously there’s the fact that he cans still be a little ruthless and unpredictable at times (usually when overwhelmed with emotion) and a lot of his actions have lasting consequences. But Alaric knows he’s stuck with Damon, so it’s both a blessing and a curse. I could cry about this line forever.
Ric meets with Jeremy and he’s concerned about what’s going on inside his head. He tells Jeremy that he can talk to him about what happened. But Jeremy’s reaction or rather non-reaction is very telling of what’s happening to him. Without intervention, he could be on his way to becoming a rather cold and detached individual.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Another heartbreaking scene when Elena’s in the kitchen as she tries to get rid of the blood. She and Damon have one of their little moments where they just get each other so well. Without even seeing her face he can tell she’s not okay. He’s being her anchor just as she was his in the previous episode, telling each other what they need to hear and giving each other the strength to keep going. He tells her that they’ll fix everything and she feels a little better.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Jeremy’s compulsion is another sad thing about this episode. Damon is just perfection, the way he describes everything to Jeremy just slays me. He’s so tender and caring. UGH! Ian’s acting is incredible here, it makes me want to bawl my eyes out…
I know I made a thread about this already, but I think deep down Jeremy wanted to go which is why he didn’t fight the compulsion. He probably didn’t want to leave his sister behind considering all the danger she’s in, but Jeremy did not want to stay in MF so I think he just let himself be compelled. Of course this is all just speculation/my interpretation. I guess we’ll see how it plays out.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Klaus and Rebekah scene is pretty sad too. Gah! Everything is making me sad in this episode. I think Klaus is afraid she’ll turn on him (well she kinda already did) when she wakes up, and he’ll really have no one on his side. Just when it seemed his dream of a happy family were finally within reach, he now has to deal with the consequences of his past actions. Everything he did is coming to bit him in the butt, and reuniting his family seems to be almost as impossible as it was when Mikael was alive.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Elena’s feeling all guilty about having to compel her brother but Damon tells her, it’s for the best. He knows how it feels to be estranged from his brother and as bad as that is, dead is definitely worst.
Elena thanks him for everything and tells him she’d doesn’t know what she’d do without him, and Damon just disappears inside himself for a moment and you can tell he’s truly affected by her words. I don’t think anyone’s ever expressed anything like that to him before so this feeling must be quite foreign to him. Again Ian’s acting is brilliant.
It prompts him to come clean about Stefan and his reasons for screwing them over because he can’t keep that from her. Elena’s obviously confused because the Stefan she witnessed didn’t seem to care about her or her brother.
Damon explains that knowing what Stefan did for him, makes him feel guilt for wanting what he wants. (i.e Elena) and the look on her face and the way she says his name is quite telling that she’s barely able to fight the feeling anymore. It’s like she’s pleading with him not to go there because she just doesn’t have the same strength and resolve she once did ever since everything that’s happened between them.
Damon understands and walks away only to go back and “seize the moment” he kissed her, because if he was going to walk around feeling guilty better it be for something rather than nothing at all right?
I think it was perfect for their first kiss. It was sweet and full of emotion, but not a make out session or too full of lust.
Elena didn’t fight it, didn’t stop it because deep down she wanted as much as he did. And it was their precious sacred moment amidst all the crazy happening around them.
Damon pulls away and Elena is breathless and speechless. She’s kind of stuck in that same position for a while before she’s finally able to move.
I think now they'll both have to deal with the guilt.
