It sounds like Ian is going right back to his Native American family roots with this, trying to find clarity. This has got to be a very difficult time for him and I'm sure getting back in communion with nature is giving him peace.
ian somerhalder@iansomerhalder10h Missing you TwitterVerse.Been on Roadtrips w/the Papa&meditation vision quests.Had to detach&shine some light on the simplicity of life;) xo
In case you aren't familiar with the term, a vision quest is a rite of passage in some Native American cultures. The ceremony of the Vision Quest is one of the most universal and ancient means to find spiritual guidance and purpose. A Vision Quest can provide deep understanding of one's life purpose. A traditional Native American Vision Quest consists of a person spending one to four days and nights secluded in nature. This provides time for deep communion with the fundamental forces and spiritual energies of creation and self-identity. During this time of intense spiritual communication a person can receive profound insight into themselves and the world. This insight, typically in the form of a dream of Vision, relates directly to their purpose and destiny in life. In many Native American groups the vision quest is a turning point in life taken to find oneself and the intended spiritual and life direction.

I hope he does find himself and it would be interesting to see what direction he does finally take with his life.

Beware the Newly Single Ian Somerhalder The news just broke that sexy CW vampire sex people Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev split after three years of dating. So the good news is: Ian's single. The bad news is: We couldn't help but notice that the dude's got a certain kind of smirky, evil je ne sais smarm about him in pictures that we've dubbed the Somersmolder. www.cosmopolitan.com/celebrity/exclusive/ian-somerhalder-smirk-photos#slide-8

I like the red shirt on him, too, or maybe it's the light, but I like it anyway.

Apparently Ian could not commit to the 50 Shades requirement which was a three year agreement, especially given that he is still working on TVD. So, it isn't that he necessarily wasn't in the running as some news outlets are trying to say, but that he couldn't meet that required commitment. It sounds like they must be planning to make more than one movie.

We'll see how the first one goes... it looks very cheap right now: the production, the organization, etc. but it doesn't have to be a good film to be a commercial success, look at the book! It sucks for Ian though, I love TVD but it's never going to be more than TVD. Anyway, with movies like this you never know. It could be the death of your career or a big help, right now I'm not feeling it as a success.

This sounds like good news for TVD fans because at least it looks like he's committed to at least another 2 years, therefore, we could at least get up to season 8. Think about it, they wanted 3 years for CG. S5 starts in October which leaves only S6 another season. And he could still film movies inbetween like he did with the Anomaly. So maybe that was the better option.

I'd prefer to avoid another GG disaster, I'm not even sure TVD can go two more seasons in a coherent way; I hope so, don't get me wrong, but I have to see it to believe it. And even if the cast accepted more seasons, I really don't see Nina with her current attitude doing it.

Since Damon is the most popular charector it is quite possible for CW to do a spin off like The Originals only this time with Damon as the central charector, therefore, it takes away the headache of worrying about three leads. That said although we complain about the storylines I still think they can produce good stories for 10 seasons, but after that they would be pushing it. Again I find it interesting that Ian didn't want to be stuck with a 3 year contract for CG because if we go with a 6 year TVD he would be free for at least two of those which was why I speculated that maybe they were considering more TVD seasons.
