Gonna try and break this off from the other thread to see where the discussion goes and to note, the topic matter isn't exclusive to just TVD. If you've watched/read another series where the 2 cross paths, I'd love to hear about their interactions there as well and discuss how their relationship is/started out/devolved into what it is.
There seems to be a common mindset that Vampires & Werewolves are 'natural' enemies. In the case of TVD, Vampires were born out of an action by a Werewolf and the curiosity of children: Henrick being attacked and killed by a Werewolf when he and Klaus sneaked out one night to watch them run, being warned well ahead of time not to do so. Mikael has his wife turn the family into Vampires to be stronger/faster/etc. than Werewolves and after doing so, commences slaughtering them throughout the ages, igniting an inter-species war. So can we say they're naturally 'hard-wired' to confront one another? One was around before the other and that other was born out of a particular scenario for vengeance against the first. This isn't nature answering to another or trying to balance out.
In Underworld, both species originally stem from the same bloodline. One Brother bitten by a bat, another by a Wolf. It's only in the case of William that his humanity was lost/destroyed with the change and started rampaging through the country turning others that Markus wanted a means to put a stop to it but also keep his Brother under control (one aspect we've seen that William does respond to). Instead, Viktor, who Markus turned because he needed an army to do what needed to be done and Viktor had such an army, imprisoned William out of the fear that if the 'Original' died, then so did the species and since he was going to use Werewolves/Lycans as slave labor, he didn't kill William (or make a move against Markus). Viktor set the basis for a rebellion and so the conflict kind of escalated/reached another stage due to his actions (and Amelia; Markus just really wanted to keep his Brother in check). This whole conflict/enemy relationship is more out of one looking out for their Brother/trying to do what was 'right' and getting screwed in the end.
I don't think True Blood actually has a conflict per se. Eric had a thing against Russell because he used Werewolves to kill his family but I don't think there is anything substantial in a conflict between the 2 species. They seem to want to keep their distances from one another if possible. I just started watching the US 'Being Human' series and in the 4th episode, another Werewolf named Ray is introduced and his #2 rule is to avoid Vampires and then proceeds to going on a rant about killing them and such when the full moon comes around. Twilight has it's own little thing going with Vampires and Werewolves. I just remember some Native American backstory and not much else so someone else could fill that in. I think some deal was struck and someone screwed the pooch on said deal hence the uneasiness between both species now.
There also seems to be the common element of Werewolves being 'beneath' Vampires. It just seems like the general attitude/theme that gets thrown into the mix.
