If last episode was anything to go by with Damon asking Kol if he knew him, I'm suspecting Damon has had his own run-in with an Original in the past and didn't know it (or may have been compelled to forget), much like Stefan?

Damon suggests that he and Hot Kol have met before. "You don't particularly stand out," Kol says. Fun fact: There's an upcoming episode that takes place in 1912, giving us a glimpse into the man Damon was after he left Stefan behind with Lexi, but before he became the badass we met in the pilot. (Damon-in-transition, shall we say.)
The writers had initially intended to include some interaction with Kol in the episode -- specifically, some drunken camaraderie concluding with a bar fight, which would've explained this awkward 2012 meeting. Unfortunately, they ended up going in a different direction with the script, so this particular moment between them will be left dangling a bit. (Have at it, fan fiction writers!)

So is the gang going to commit their efforts to finding the new tree before the Originals if/when they find out there is another tree to use to kill them? I'm sure Damon & Stefan will go ahead with the plan and even Elena will get on board with killing Klaus cause she can do it now without having to kill Elijah or Bekah but I feel like this angle is running a bit dry. It seems like instead of Klaus being a constant threat overlooking the gang, it's a role reversal with the gang constantly overlooking Klaus and trying to find a means to kill him. Co-exist?
