I wouldn't be mad if the show ended with the Brothers realizing, despite all the good that came from Elena's presence in their lives and righting some of the damage done by Katherine, if neither one of them ended up with her. If both walked away better men and could actually leave Elena to live a normal life (since they go on about how they're not good enough for her ) and possibly start something of their own with women that aren't doppelgangers and in turn, aren't the same damn woman. But I know I'm the minority and having Elena not end up with either Brother when this is over would probably result in death threats for the writing staff :-\
Elena has made as much clear that she wants to have a family and grow old so this constant playing around with Vampires in a romantic way seems pointless for her long term goal. Stefan knows as much since she told him so is it just for the here and now? The Brothers hooking up with other Vampires or immortal creatures seems like it'd be in their best interests than rather dealing with losing Elena down the line due to old age or because she's moving ahead to start a family. I could understand the angle if Elena was on the fence about turning but she broke down when she thought she was going to turn. And as long as Klaus is alive, he'll see to it that she remains human as well and provides children to continue her bloodline cause he wants to keep making Hybrids way into the future.
I'm thinking the Writers have tunnel vision in certain fields of the show and leave the rest of it only when it works for story purposes which is why the story seems all over the place.
