A few of us discussed this in chat but what the hell was up with Bonnie this episode? Was she just not thinking at all outside of 'Elena is turning into a Vampire. Lets throw caution to the wind and see what I can screw up'?
I know she's had it hard at the tail end of S3 with the breakdown and all the crap that happened to her but last night's episode was just showing some extreme lack of judgment on her part. I thought it was amazing that she went on about doing her own thing at the end of S3 by defying the Spirits and saving Klaus from his mother's/their plan and then turns right around at the start of S4 crawling back to them on Elena's behalf to lend her some power to stop the transition.
Not the worst part. They ignore her and what does she do? Immediately jumps to using black magic again cause the Spirits are ignoring her for defying what they want. Why she thought that would even work is beyond me. Her grand plan? Kill herself, go to the Spirit world, drag whatever part of Elena's soul is already over there back over to our side along with her own. What?
She succeeds in killing herself and locates Elena but before she can do what she set out to do, Grams shows up to tell her to stop and warns her that the Spirits, who are now listening/taking notice again of Bonnie's actions, will punish her if she continues using black magic. You know, the same Spirits who had no problem with Bonnie using it to down Klaus last season But now that she's using it for her own personal reasons, they feel the need to start writing citations/tickets.
Jump ahead to Klaus being pissy about wanting to get back into the comfort of his own body cause her can't be as imposing/charming as he usually is in Tyler's body. I'd want to get out too. Bonnie is under watch now and finds herself forced to use black magic again to save Tyler's body (who we find out actually agreed to sharing but no one told Caroline...the love found that out the hard way) from Klaus destroying it and possibly using his own Witches to do the job since Bonnie won't. Some smart person pitches the idea to give it a few weeks so Bonnie can get enough power/rest to do the required spell without the use of black magic but I doubt this would have worked as Bonnie is the group's go to Witch and the group being in the kind of trouble they're always in would have stepped in something else and needed her. Just as easily, Klaus could have put in a call to his own Witches and probably had them there in 2-3 days instead of having to wait weeks.
Bonnie pushes her luck and Grams walks in when she has her hands in the black magic cookie jar...again. So what do the Spirits do? They punish Bonnie by punishing Grams. Don't know how yet. Either Grams has suffered a 2nd death or she's been sent elsewhere to suffer. Why the Spirits thought it was 'right' to punish Sheila when she was trying to help get Bonnie back on the right path is beyond me. Emily was nowhere to be found to help her descendants or give her own advice on what not to do. Go figure.
This episode was just bad overall for my views on Witches and these Spirits that seem to be governing things from the other side. Just the way they go about things (ignoring pleas but when someone wants to use magic for personal reasons, they send 5-0). I would have thought Bonnie would have gone about the black magic in a more progressive way and not just full on and get punished that quickly but that's not the case. And if others can practice black magic without these kinds of punishments (Klaus' Witches), maybe Bonnie should have a talk with him or something about that (although since Klaus steals these Witches from their families at a young age, one can say those punishments would have little to no impact on them).
Emily not showing up makes me think that she's in some inner circle or doesn't care enough to make Bonnie her business so what is left for the Spirits to take from Bonnie if she continues on this path? Abby is a Vampire and I think they'd be pushing their power if they started harassing any other living family members because of what Bonnie was doing (such as Lucy or Bonnie's father if he is Warlock). I'm really thinking it's about time for Bonnie to break whatever chains/ties she has with these Spirits and really seek out an alternative source for her magic. Black magic may be a bit too extreme for full on use so maybe something else that isn't reliant on the Spirits as a source. I'd say 'blood' magic but that may be too close to black magic as well if she has to use her own blood all the time (or animals).
