Anyone think that the writers turn Elena to a vampire is a mistake?
I don't like it. I still think it is too soon. and I don;t like her as a vampire. She isn't likable as previous seasons ( I think) so mean and weird....

She's never been likeable to me. I'm waiting for her to feel out her personality as a Vampire though.
As for being too early...they have enough material for 6 seasons I believe so I figure they felt S4 was a good place to do it. Think she turned into a Vampire in Book 2 in the books but she's all over the place there. Also, her becoming a Vampire was kind of a 'progressive' move for the Writers to make some new progress with her and Damon. As a Vampire, it drives a rift between her and Stefan. Stefan can't really enjoy himself around her in this state and him trying to do things his way is hurting her. It's pushing her to Damon for help and she's finding out that Stefan isn't in the best position for what's going on with her right now. It'll also give her some new insight to the Brothers and what they are/are going through.
I think the change was more for the sake of the triangle and less for the character.

As for Elena's personality being likeable, that's a bit subjective as everyone has their own opinion on that aspect. Her being mean, to who? Bekah? Bekah's never been quiet on how much Elena frustrates her even before she turned. Then she gave Elena the 'Mean Girl' treatment which I thought was funny But Elena's senses are heightened and so her anger will be ten times than what it would normally be when someone upsets her. Her weirdness comes from the transition and her emotions being all over the place. Elena's the main character so they're going to delve a bit more into this transitioning phase than what they did for some of the other characters. On that note it's been hinted/said a couple of times that who Elena was in the first couple seasons wasn't who she really was. Elena herself tells Damon in 1x11 that she, use to be more fun and in early season 1 Caroline said something along those lines as well. Though we also get glimpses of her fun, wilder side like in 1x11, 3x06 and especially in the flashbacks of 3x22 when she meets Damon for the first time (having that flirty attitude) and her flashback when she's dating Matt with Jenna (dancing around in her room with her cheer leading outfit on, complaining to Bonnie of how boring Matt is). After her parents died she regressed into the scared, sheltered girl that we see in season 1. Obviously things like being a peppy cheerleader didn't appeal to her anymore and she was urged to quit. With that said I think vampire Elena is more of the Elena she was before her parents died. Now that she's a vampire all those insecurities of human Elena are void and she can be more herself. Also on the turning to early like Slash said she turned earlier in the books I think JP said they had plans to turn Elena at the end of season 2 but decided against it. Elena was always going to turn eventually and it's inevitable anyways giving that she's in love with two vampires and had no plans of breaking off and enjoying a human life. I also agree with what Slash said about the triangle stuff. I didn't get much into that since he pretty much said what was needed to

I personally like vampire Elena better so far, but we'll see how that goes. I didn't like how guarded she was as a human, not letting anyone really in, if you know what I mean. She seemed to be hiding inside herself and even she wasn't aware of her own feelings. Now it seems she's wearing her heart out on her sleeve and I like that better. I imagine she will settle somewhere in the middle between the two.

Meh. Writers wanted to keep Human Elena from evolving so they could do all that as a Vampire. I don't believe that someone, especially the lead heroine would be that static for so long.

It goes back to that regression of character and how she just nestled herself into a cocoon of safety and familiarity. It's like what Doppel said. Elena was guarded as a human and her current position felt safe and nice so why would she want to let go of that? Kind of like growing up with your parents and not wanting to leave to go on your own for lack of a better analogy. If you ask me it's kind of obvious what was holding Elena back and what pushed her forward. Although getting into that would be off topic so I leave it at that

Finding out Stefan was a Ripper and could fly off at the slightest taste of human blood should have been a "Wait a minute..." revelation for Elena about her whole 'Safety' feelings about him but it wasn't. So between 'Safety' and 'Familiarity', one can overwrite the other at any given time which negates the purpose of either one leaving her in 'Dangerous' and 'Unfamiliar' situations? Right?
It was only safe and nice cause she was babied and yes, everyone guarded her. People that just showed in town would protect her because she was important (Elijah and Klaus later on) and her friends would sacrifice limbs to make sure nothing happened to her.
I'm honestly not sure what's considered off-topic in this thread cause it's about Elena and that's a lot of ground to cover as a character and on different fronts.

That's another thing I could go on about that would be off topic. And when I say off topic I mean going into Delena/Stelena when the original topic is about Elena's personality as a vampire. Although Damon and Stefan did have some effect. In a way I guess the question is already answered and another debate topic could be made regarding Elena since there's lots of things that could be talked about in regards to her personality/development/etc.
