Hey,
So far Damon has been all "I don't care about the cure, I like Elena the way she is and was. I'll just help you for the sake of helping."
Somehow I felt that Damon's reaction when he heard about the cure was confusing to me, not really knowing how he felt about the whole thing himself. About curing himself.
Then I noticed this clip on Youtube. You'll only have to watch a couple of seconds to see why I started wondering what his motives really were.

So you're saying he has ulterior motives? I don't think so.

Ya I never in a million years could ever see him taking the cure from Elena if she wanted it. The only way I could see him do this is if she was human too and wanted to be human together, she was human and she didn't want him so he has the cure to take and takes it, she died or they all died but him. You take Elena out of the equation then yes he'd love to be human. Elena in the equation no way! He loves her more than anything he'd never take her chance at being human hence why he'd let Matt die or Bonnie die to keep her alive and human!

I think given the road traveled since that point, he'd put it aside. Elena is still a target, her group of friends have trouble fending for themselves and if he were human, they'd pretty much be left to die. He wouldn't be able to help Stefan to the best of his ability either if he were human and Stefan remained Vampire. It's just a really muddy picture for him to turn human again by his own choosing unless they deal with other ends first (Klaus for instance). If he could get Elena human and the others to follow suit too (Stefan, Caroline, Tyler and the Hybrids if they'd take the option but they'd lose their control again), he'd probably budge on it by being the last, killing Klaus, and then reverting before the deadline but really, it just complicates things: Originals retaliating and they'd have to track down Abby as well and possibly Katherine if she runs off again to give them the cure if they want it.
At this point in time, I don't think he has ulterior motives and it's the circumstances surrounding his current role in the group & his talk at Alaric's grave that makes me believe that. If he can find a cure and help Elena (& Stefan) revert to human only, I think he'd do that and remain a Vampire himself or be the last to take the 'cure' if the others were involved.
Best case scenario though or Damon's 'ulterior motive' is help do the leg work for Klaus, use the cure on him, 'break' his binding to the bloodline and kill him or let him be. He'd be a werewolf and without the proper magic/spell to create another 'Original' Vampire like his mother did before with them & Alaric, he'd lose the Hybrid base (being able to create more from himself or breaking the sire bond amongst them). Essentially, he'd be 'mortal' to a degree and his other family members could literally put a leash on him and keep him out of the group's hair or the gang could just out muscle him in a fight now. From there, the rest of the gang could look at the cure if they want to.

hmm what's crazy to me is the vampires from Klaus's bloodline... would they have Hybrid or werewolf capability because of Klaus's blood?

Ah I agree, of course if only one could take it, it wouldn't be Damon. Not in a million years. However, the way the Five were planning on using it was to destroy all vampires, I think the cure is repeatable (or one that spreads rapidly).
I don't think Damon has any superior ulterior motives either, but he has given us quite a few unDamonly surprises and deep inside, he just might want to get rid of vampirism for good. But then again, he might refuse it altogether even if he had the chance for the reasons listed by you guys, protection etc.
