If Damon were permanently gone off the show would you still keep watching it?

I can't have Delena if Damon isn't there But really it would be pretty boring if Damon wasn't there and come off as another Twilight. If I didn't read the books and just saw it advertised with Stefan and Elena I'd probably pass it up. Just think of it in terms of the first episode. A cute high school romance with some vampires. Damon didn't show up until the end which was what sealed the deal and made it interesting for some people. Because no matter what people are going to compare it to Twilight. And Damon's character being 'bad' in season 1 didn't bother me. It was actually fun seeing a vampire being, well a vampire. Plus Damon's character has all the best one liners in the show. Actually I like everything that comes out his mouth to be exact

I'm going to be the odd one out but it'd depend on where the story and other characters are going. You'll already know I'm critical of a lot of the story and the same could be said for most of the characters. I hate most that are at the forefront, their stories are underutilized or the ones I do enjoy don't get enough time. If Damon's death/disappearance would offer some of these characters to get more time or develop in a way/direction I'd like, then I'd continue to watch but that's not to say I don't enjoy Damon's character. The pining/relationship stuff aside that I've had to put up with, he's one of my favorites/one of the most developed/tragic characters and it'd be a huge loss in that regard. Plus, he keeps everyone alive. If he goes, I figure I can still tune in to watch the others drop like flies But really, his loss and my continuing to watch would depend on how it impacts the story and other characters going forward. Yay for putting an end to the triangle but I'd rather just have Stefan or both of the brothers move on entirely than kill one of them off. The show chickened out on killing Bonnie or even playing with the idea that she'd be dead to the viewer for an extended time (think they originally planned a few episodes, then a week, and then settled on a commercial break ) so doing so with someone of Damon's caliber would be a huge gamble on the show's part if they don't handle it right (viewership dips till his return). Sadly with this show and it's triangle, the board isn't balanced enough to where you can take one out of action for a limited time and let the opposite carry on during that period, no less the one being taken out is the fan favorite. If Stefan had the same development and support as Damon, they could probably gamble it but they can't in this reality. My $.02 on the matter.

Yeah but Stefan and Elena could be together forever and they could drag them out of their marital bliss by having them make cookies for school functions once in a while or something... Can't you just see it now? Meanwhile the rest of the gang will slowly die off of lack of brain cells and believing everything they are told. The Originals will become the new town council and there will be martial law. If you go out after dark you will be eaten.

Easy answer: no.
I only watch this show because Ian Somerhalder is on it.

God help this show if Ian ever gets dissatisfied with the way he's treated on this show or gets offered a better gig due to those circumstances and actually contemplates bailing.
I feel like he should hold the show hostage. Get the rest of the cast together, ask them what they want for their characters and if the showrunners don't agree to those terms, he bounces. I'd like to see JP shoot herself in the foot by saying 'No' or 'What Ian wants and what Damon gets are two different things."

It's the ultimate secret, Elena. You'll be happy as never before. And we'll be together, you and I.

There's no TVD without Damon but i think i would watch only the episode after his death to see how they're floundering without him.

I think if they had him appear as a ghost to Jeremy or had him watching over Elena for all eternity I would toss my cookies.
