The movie 'Savages' had an 'open' triangle. The girl in the middle of it all had a relationship with 2 guys and they all lived under the same roof, she loved/was having sex with both of them of saw them both for their strong points.

They weren't Brothers though, although they've known each other for a long time and didn't have this divide between them like the Salvatores. But Elena cares a bit too much about her peers. I'm sure if all of them could get on the same page (still, the Brother thing is glaring me in the face) and were fine with Elena's choice and Elena put her foot down that it's both or no one and disregarded what others thought of her choice, then it'd be a step up. It'd probably do more good. Damon & Stefan getting on the same page and not having to worry about competition (could focus all that emotion towards other issues) and each Brother could play to their strengths with the same goal in mind, not having to worry about if they'll get the girl in the end.

They have an eternity now. She can be happy, romantically with both, right? That's kind of one of those 'out there' scenarios though: Elena choosing both and both accepting that and entering into an 'actual', open triangle relationship.
