Ian Somerhalder to be a speaker at the Social Good Summit September 22-24  Ian Somerhalder has been asked to be a speaker at the Social Good Summit in New York City. The seminar will be a three day dialogue with the ‘most innovative technologists, influential minds and passionate activists will come together with one shared goal to unlock the potential of new media and technology to make the world a better place and then to translate it into action’. The event will take place during United Nations Week September 22-24 at 92nd Street in New York City. We all know of Ian Somerhalder’s multifaceted talents in his role as Damon Salvatore on the Vampire Diaries, but what are the credentials that give him the honor of being on this panel? After the BP Oil Spill totally devastated his homeland in Louisiana and no help came for months, he created the Ian Somerhalder Foundation on December 8, 2010. Forming the Foundation helped him bring awareness and a voice to the plight of animals and people alike during that disaster. The Foundation is not yet three years old and thriving-it currently has 100 branches all over the world. Although the Foundation has may initiatives. the current major plan is to build a animal sanctuary for homeless animals and a sustainable farm in his native Louisiana. In 2011, ISF joined with the Alliance for Global Conservation to create a series of oceanic television programs entitles ‘Planet Green Blue August. Ian was the host and filmed the life of sea turtles in Trinidad Tobago. This year the Human Society praised him with the Wyler Award and Environmental Medial presented the Young Futures Award to him. This year Ian also became an advisor to the newly formed RYOT News.org. It is a new online newspaper that gives readers a chance to ‘become the news’ by taking an action. It can be signing a petition, making a donation or other action. On Sunday September 22, history is going to be made. The Social Good Summit is extending its boundaries. People all over the world are being encouraged to start and join ‘Meetups’ to ask the same question as the Summit ‘How can technology and new media create solutions for the biggest problems facing my community and create a better future by 2030’. Another article on it: Ian will speaking at a panel called “The Future of News: From Passive to Active, Combining Awareness and Activism,” along with fellow co-founders of RYOT.org, an online news source that pairs the consumption of news with the possibility for action. Every news story on the RYOT.org site is accompanied with an “action box” that gives the reader a way to impact the story, if they so choose. Examples include: donating to an organization making a positive impact on the featured issue, signing a petition, or sending a tweet. RYOT also gives a percentage of all ad revenue to featured non-profit that changes weekly. The Social Good Summit is a pretty big deal. Held annually during New York’s U.N. Week, this year’s theme is #2030NOW and conference-goers will share their ideas of how new media and technology can be used to tackle problems both locally and around the world. Other speakers include Al Gore, Astronaut Ron Garan, and Barbara Bush (of Global Health Corps), so Ian is amongst esteemed company.
