FRESH STARTS AND SECOND CHANCES — After spending the past four months coping with the loss of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) in an unconventional and potentially dangerous way, Elena (Nina Dobrev) has returned to Whitmore College for the start of sophomore year. Unable to move on, Caroline (Candice Accola) is desperate to find a way to reverse the anti-magic spell the Travelers have put over Mystic Falls and grows frustrated when her calls to Stefan (Paul Wesley) go unanswered. Tyler (Michael Trevino), who is human once again, has a run-in at a football tailgate that tests his ability to control his anger, while Matt (Zach Roerig) worries that Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is dealing with the loss of Bonnie (Kat Graham) in a self-destructive way. Alaric (Matt Davis), who is struggling to adjust to his new life as a vampire, finds himself in an awkward situation when he meets Jo (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), a beautiful doctor at the university hospital. Last, while everyone believes Stefan is off tracking a lead to get Damon and Bonnie back, Elena is shocked when she learns the truth of what he has really been up to. I was just dumbfounded at the end, atleast we know theyre alive, somewhat, and they know about vampires, so they havent lost their memories, just wish Alaric would either delay wipe Elena's memories of Damon or compel her to forgot about Damon for a short time.

Yeah I agree because compelling her now might bring on a bunch of problems once Damon is back. From the new promos it looks like Damon and Bonnie are basically reliving one day over and over again and Damon keeps annoying her with his vampire pancakes...lol How they will get out of that 'time loop' will be interesting to watch.

I think we will see Alaric wipe her Damon memories. Plec seems to like this love triangle a bit too much and starting from square one seems to be her plan. I heard this season was about fresh starts and reuniting the family, a love triangle between S, D and E is probably going to re arise in the middle of the season. I mean other than like able characters like Grams, Lexi, Kol, the only other reason to watch is the love triangle. Get a plot going or something :/

I decided this season to avoid the real time reviews (i.e watch and do my twitter post like comments lol) instead just give general thoughts.
Okay so this episode focused heavily on Damon been dead but I feel that didn't work. As to me personally Bonnie was an after thought we got told people mourned off screen. I've said it before A LOT i'll say it again. WHY DO THE WRITERS HATE POOR BONNIE? even Caroline who spent all of last season been Anti-damon mentioned damon more than Bonnie.
The good IMO :
Aleric is back!
Matt is a power ranger! They finally found something cool for him to do. Besides dating rebekah
Caroline's mother is back to be been a main!
Elena on drugs was a cool idea
LOVED the Damon / Bonnie scene LOL the vampire pancakes XD oh god the vampire pancakes. Most adorable and hilarious thing on this show in years.
The bad
A mind wipe? REALLY!? Elena has lost her parents , Jenna , Jeremy (though he got better) Bonnie (though she got better) Bonnie again but Damon requires a mind wipe? I was hopeful this season = no triangle but the second they mentioned mind wipe I actually out loud said "oh for **** sake"
Tyler seems back to pre-werewolf jerk character. Been human at end of season I was like "Hmmm interesting there's lots of places this can go" and in turns out they just wanted to nerf the hybrid and rehash season 2 storyline for him. Not cool.
No Enzo. I kept hoping he'd show and comfort Caroline. I still ship Cenzo
The lack of caring about Bonnie.
Stefan moving on, No I don't think he should be Elena but Damon dies he moves and gets a life else where? It seemed OOC that he never spoke to Caroline at least.

overall not a bad episode, better than most of season 5 but still not quiet up to par with the series in it's prime
