Hello friends, This thread is for fans of Outlander, the tv show on STARZ, based on the series by Dian Gabaldon. For those who don't know, and might be interested in trying the series, it is mostly a romance, but also historical fantasy, adventure, drama, and much much more. When the books were first written, they couldn't figure out what category to put them in because they fit into so many at once. The story is told from the point of view of Claire Randal, a British combat nurse from WWII who, while visiting Scotland with her husband, visits some ancient standing stones and suddenly finds herself in 1743. She is then forced to live by her wits and knowledge of the future and of medicine in order to survive, and is swept up with a group of Scottish rebels.
Ok, so, for those of you who are already fans and are watching the show, how do you feel about it so far?? Are you as madly in love with James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser as I am?? What were your favorite moments of the first half of season 1??
Share share share!

Hmmm...I don't watch it but is it good? Tell me about it? Without giving too much away of course. Think Braveheart, or Rob Roy, but with a seriously intense romance that has a slow build and long payoff. And throw in time travel and the most amazing specimen of a man who never lived, Jamie Fraser. Check out what people are saying, there is a lot of love out there for this series. It's beautifully filmed, and there is SO much story, and they are just getting started.

What's crazy is my friend gave me this book 3 years ago to read. I read like 30 pages but all the Scottish history in the beginning bore me so I stopped. Then another friend of mine was all obsessed was meeting the author and I didn't put two and two together until I saw the trailer for the show. I figured it was the book I had and the book my friend was raving about. So I watched it and was immediately hooked! My favorite moments have been mostly Jamie and Claire moments. Some Doogle moments too. But once they got to the Scottish castle forgot the name lech something or rather and she was up in the room dressing his wounds I knew then they'd be forever! I also loved when they talked about getting married and Claire asked if he minded she was not a Virgin and Jamie said only if you don't mind that I am. I loved how he made her a ring. How he looks at her as if she's such an amazing work of priceless art. He admires her and I think he's in awe of her. I love when he moans and groans in the back of his throat when he's thinking of something, something is funny to him or when he's making love to her. I love how in this last episode twice he saved her esp from Randall when he says get your hands off my wife! I just love that since she is his now and there wasn't love per SE to start he's going to value her like a wife should be valued no matter who she is or how they came to be. I know Claire loves Frank and I feel horrible for Frank but my gosh Jamie is everything she lacked with Frank. And I couldn't believe after sleeping with Jamie she ran up to Craigh nugh doun (how u spell it) and was willing to give him up for Frank. Ok I can understand but I can't! I'm blinded by Jamie's perfection. She's blinded by her old life! But there are moments where I love doogle and moments where I hate him. But when those Scotts kicked the other townies butts for disrespecting Claire.... That might be one of my favorite non Jamie/Claire scene ever! I love period films and books so this is like heaven! April can't come soon enough. In the meantime I'll finish the book but I heard I'm up for some really heartbreaking and disturbing jamie moments. Moments that the book readers when reading outlander again refuse to read and skip over. I'm scared!

Thanks for putting this thread here Miss!!! JAMMF is my new pretend boyfriend. I still love Mr. Darcy but sometimes you just have to let go! My own experience is much like yours Sweet. Knowing my love for history, romance and quite frankly, men in kilts, the book has been recommended to me several times over the years by several different people. I saw the preview for the show on STARZ and was already to watch the sneak preview of the first episode when I decided I would read the book first. So as I read upto each episode I allowed myself to watch. If you haven't read the book you REALLY must. It was so well written and the characters are so realized. Diana Gabaldon is brilliant.
It is a roller coaster ride of emotion. The things that Jamie says to Claire in the book will give you butterflies...over and over again. I am on the third book, Voyager, right now and I can't put it down. There is a lot of history and I loved learning about the Scotish rebellion and putting a face on these brave highland men.
I love Claire although I often want to smack her. I don't want to spoil anything but if love triangles make you antsy like they do me and you just can't bare being dragged through another one, dinna fash Sassenach....
I love the characters, I could totally hang out and party with Angus. I love Willy when he goes toe to toe with the priest on Bible verses. I love Dougal but I can't really put a finger on him yet.
Dopple, if you have STARZ you can catch up. The first half of the season is over and we are on hiatus until April 4th. I would strongly advise anyone to read the books. At least the first one as it covers this first and second season. YES, there is some awful stuff coming up in the second half. I cried and it made me sick to think about it. I remember just putting the book down for a little bit and staring out the window for a long time. Brutal...

Sweet...I know the part they are talking about and as brutal as it is I need to see it portrayed and done right. It is so integral to the rest of the story.

Moments that the book readers when reading outlander again refuse to read and skip over. I'm scared! Yes yes yes! All the things you said Jamie is the King of Men, even the director of the show says that's what his own wife calls Jamie lol. I just adore all the subtle looks of longing and admiration he gives Claire throughout the series. He's totally crazy about her from minute 1 haha! And don't worry Sweet, she will see the light eventually. How could anyone NOT fall completely in love with Jamie? He is totally gorgeous, for one thing, and says the most beautiful and sweet things, and he's a real man of honor! It's a good thing he's not real, or woman everywhere would never be satisfied with regular men lol And he may be a virgin, but he's a quick study I love Rupert and Angus, they are hilarious. I loved how they defended her honor at the Inn, that was so great! And I love how everyone took part in making the wedding happen. Doesn't it just melt your heart how Jamie wanted everything to be perfect for her? I also feel bad for Frank, but even as good a man as he is, no one can compete with Jamie. There is definitely some rough stuff coming up (I have read the first three books), and it is probably going to be hard to watch (if you thought the flogging scene was bad ...), but is really important to the rest of the story. And don't worry, Jamie is strong! I am so in love with this series!! I cannot wait for April!!!!

I remember just putting the book down for a little bit and staring out the window for a long time. Brutal... My pleasure! I'm so happy to have fellow Outlander fans here! I read the first three books about 15 years ago (I think I might have been a bit too young for them haha, but oh well). I am also a big fan of history and romance, and men in kilts . I used to dream about what it would be like if they made the books into movies or something, and who would play the characters. I always pictured Jason Isacs (the bad guy from the Patriot) as Frank/Jack, but Tobias has won me over. He is incredible, don't you think? Totally creepy as Jack, and totally the opposite as Frank. You know what's funny though, I was never able to picture Jamie fully, and no actor I could think of fit the bill. But Sam Heughan ... he IS Jamie, no question! It's like they created him out of thin air just to become Jamie lol. And I wasn't crazy about Claire in the beginning, but she has won me over. I love her too now. But I agree, as much as I love her, there are sometimes I seriously want to slap her. And I love/hate Dougal too lol. He has these moments when you're like, huh you might be a pretty good guy! But then he does something jack***ish and then I'm like, nope nevermind! haha. Did you read people's comments online after the Wedding episode? There was some pretty funny stuff out there lol. One woman posted, "My TV just got pregnant!" LOL, and another person said that she dragged her husband to bed afterwards and then he made her promise never to erase the episode from their TV lol. Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ that was seriously hot! But it was also so incredibly moving and sweet, just like it was in the book. God I am seriously in love with Jamie haha. In one TVLine review for episode 4 (the Gathering) the reviewer wrote, "With a voice like a cashmere throw knitted by kittens sipping hot cocoa, Jamie sympathetically tells her he’ll see her safely back to the castle." HAHAHAHAHA I almost died laughing. It's so true!! I love the way it's filmed too, and all the beautiful scenes of Scotland. So incredible. I can't believe we have to wait until April for the second half of the season!! What are you most looking forward to seeing next? I'm excited to see how they show the Witch trial, and waiting with bated breath for her to make her Choice! I'm also looking forward to seeing Lallybrock :-)

Oh boy, girls we've got it bad! Yes, Miss, Sam did not exist on this planet until he materialized as Jamie. I don't actually like to see his real life stuff even though I follow him on twitter. He is Jamie, that's it! Since I already had a visual before I started reading he just fit the bill so perfectly that I didn't have to conjure him up in my head. I would have seen Claire more full figured than she is and not quite so tall but I have grown to like Cait in the role. Love the analogy of Jamie's voice! LOL! Spot on! I could see Jason Issacs for sure as Frank. Good call, and Tobias Menzies kind of looks like Jason too. What a fabulous acting job he is doing! WOWZA! Really, you're right it's like watching two different people. I think he may even play his brother Alexander down the road. What am I most looking forward to? I hate to say it but I am really looking forward to Black Jack and Jamie prison scene and what transpires afterwards between Claire and Jamie. It is going to be gut wrenching but it is so well written and I have a lot of faith the TV series will get it right. They certainly fulfilled our wedding day dreams!! Dayummm! Looking forward to the witch trials as well. So much to love here!!! But I adore how Jamie just keeps saving her and is always there for her. I think it would be brutal to be only a TV viewer right now, not knowing the rest to the story and only seeing how Jamie has fallen for Claire and he wears his heart on his sleeve and calls her his wife and the little minx keeps breaking her promises and keeps trying to get back to Frank. Ugh!!! What's really great about the series is that you can be a book reader or not and still feel so much. They are doing an awesome job.

They are doing such a wonderful job with this, it has surpassed my expectations completely. I have always dreaded having something I love get ruined by tv people, but I needn't have worried! They know what they are doing. I can't say that I am "looking forward" to the Jack/Jamie stuff per se lol, but I will say that I am definitely curious to see how that is done. I'm also curious to see if they really get a herd of cattle into the prison lol. Another scene I'm not exactly looking forward to but am very interested to see how its done is the scene that will probably come up pretty soon after the break, the punishment scene with Jamie and Claire. I'm curious to see how non book readers react to that. I hope they make the reasoning clear enough so that people don't get really angry with Jamie. That will be a tough one for all the feminists out there. I'm also wondering if they are going to do the "waterhorse" scene. I hope they do, I always loved that part in the book (probably because I was totally fascinated with Lock Ness).

Maybe I shouldn't say I'm looking forward to BJR and Jamie in prison...nope, yes I am! lol. I don't even know why, but I need to see it. Actually the worst part for me is that it breaks Jamie and I was so frightened for him. Gah...makes me crazy just remembering it! Um yea, I've heard some people complaining about the scene you are talking about. Mostly from people who came to the books late and have very modern sensibilities and don't take into consideration that this was a common event for those times and it wasn't meant to degrade. Still, I agree that I really hope it is handled with a nod to it being a teaching moment so to speak and allow people to grasp the event relevent to the time period. Yes on the water horse too!! I think it comes up at the witch trial again so hoping they don't skip that part.

Doppel you should definitely give it a try! It's so good. The story is really well developed and it spans decades (and also centuries), and there is a lot of interesting historical facts involved. There's witchcraft and time travel, and epic romance, and so much more. Definitely check it out. And let us know what you think!
