Airs 2/5/15 at 8pm Eastern time.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BONNIE — Determined to celebrate Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) birthday, Elena (Nina Dobrev) convinces Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) that it’s what Bonnie would have wanted. After piecing the broken ascendant back together, Elena, Jeremy and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) attempt to send Bonnie a message, but the situation turns dire when they make an unsettling discovery. Meanwhile, after uncovering Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) secret about his great-niece Sarah Salvatore (guest star Tristan Mays), Enzo (Michael Malarkey) enlists a reluctant Matt (Zach Roerig) to help interfere with her life. Elsewhere, Stefan keeps a close eye on Caroline (Candice Accola) as she unconventionally attempts to cope with everything going on around her. Lastly, realizing it might be time to move on with his life, Jeremy contemplates leaving Mystic Falls for good. Pascal Verschooris directed the episode written by Chad Fiveash & James Stoteraux (#613). Original airdate 2/5/2015.

I enjoyed many parts of this episode and as usual some parts annoyed me I have mixed feelings about Kai's new found empathy. I really enjoy bad boy Kai and I don't want him to become too much of a softie. He has clearly changed because of the merge and I think the biggest tell was when he couldn't kill Liv - Luke literally wouldn't let him do it. Ugh. And surprise surprise another Gemini twin rescue screw up. How many times has one of these twins interrupted something that they shouldn't have (ah hem, the reason Damon got stuck on the other side). Kill her and get it over with. I'm glad Ty finally grew a pair and told her to stick it. Not sure how long that will last, but at least he finally stuck up for himself and stopped chasing after her like a faithful puppy. They kind of explained Enzo's motives a little more clearly, but it is still stupid. He feels like he needs to avenge the fact that Stefan has manipulated Damon's feelings about Sarah all these years. Umm, a little far fetched but hopefully they hone in this crazy scheme and make this upcoming SL good. I have to say that I have not been on board with Steroline, but I was rooting for them tonight! I so wanted to see that kiss and they directed it perfectly to try and pull people off the fence. I am thinking when that kiss finally happens, more people will be OK with them. Delena - What beautiful, beautiful stuff we've got going on here. I love to see the casual aspects of their relationship that we are getting - feeding the food, stolen kisses, conversation that doesn't lead to a screaming match. Damon is not fighting her every step of the way. He actually seems more confident in himself AND their relationship AND her love for him. I mean, the girl erased her memories and she still came back to him! THAT is love and whoever can't see it is in denial. The final moment was great, I got feels for sure and I loved the secureness of their relationship in that last moment even though her memories are gone. They are making new memories, and that is awesome, but can we see some summer flashbacks or can they take a break from saving everyone else and go on their date already

It was sort of stupid to have him talk about crying like it was alien. I mean he has been around people that cry...lol I hate what they are doing with Enzo...ALOT. It makes zero sense. I see the parallel they are making with Bonnie trying to kill herself and therefore leaving Jeremy, as if Jeremy wasn't enough in the same as Liv was willing to die to kill Kai and leave Tyler...I see what they are doing there! They had to find a reason for Jeremy to be alright and ready to leave despite knowing Bonnie was alive since he is leaving the series. I was glad they didn't go too heavy on any Bamon stuff. Damon is back in his own world and while he cares about Bonnie and wants to help her get back he is fully involved with Elena again. Bonnie was a good friend to him while he was away from her and in true Damon fashion he isn't going to forget that and he will repay the debt somehow some way. That's Damon. But I can see the writers are fully onboard with Delena because wowsa....the Delena was good, killing all objections one at a time. I love it!

I loved Delena this episode, definitely knocking down all the haters, lol. I also have to say that I Loved Damon in this episode - every plan he had was brilliant: figuring out they could send a message to Bonnie, using Kai's new empathy to getting his help, knocking Liv out to drop the spell, and remembering that he wrote in the Atlas. And he did it all while looking super hot

Can I just say - what's up with Bonnie fans complaining that she's going to have to "rescue herself" again. First of all, she just tried to kill herself and had a last second reminder that she needed to be strong.
#1 - She might very well be dead if Jeremy didn't drum up enough power to open that door. #2 - They are doing the best they can with the magic they have available. #3 - It was Damon who thought up the plan to get her to Silas' tombstone. #4 - It was Jeremy who went back to try and open the atlas.
They have literally done what they can from the present day. They couldn't do anything else now if they were with her. She is the witch and has to cast the spell! She is not saving herself, all of their actions led to saving her!!!
OK, end rant.

Liv is in her own world and Kai's a psychopath, though they played on his whole Luke merge thing I don't know how long Kai will just willingly give a hand without wanting something in return. Though I'm not sure where Jo was this episode. It's a bit convenient to not have Jo there, considering she'd be the one person not wrapped up in the whole Liv/Kai drama and would have been able to cast the spell peacefully.
With Kai writing a letter to Jo and all, he wouldn't have been all hellbent on killing her, adding his Luke qualities and you'd have two witches on board to save Bonnie so she'd have been back that episode. Of course this is likely why Jo wasn't present in the episode since that would have been easy lol.

Also I didn't really get what Liv was trying to accomplish by going after Kai. I know she's angry about what happened to her brother but Luke gave her this chance to live over him. If it wasn't for Luke's qualities in Kai then she would have been dead and the sacrifice that Luke made would have been in vain.
I don't know what's next in store for her and Tyler but I think her 'character development' has to do with her accepting this chance she has at life and moving on from her life, Mystic Falls and living for both herself and her brother. Otherwise she's just going to get herself killed, not just by Kai, but by the gang as well if she keeps being a bug in the rug when it comes to the gang trying to rescue/save someone.

A beautiul performance from Kat in this episode, as we see Bonnie celebrate her birthday alone, one of the highlights of the episode for me. You could feel the isolation she was feeling, you could feel the pain she felt being cut off from the real world away from friends and family. Caroline searching for the Ms.Cuddles she had buried when she was nine years old was the icing on the cake, she told Stefan she couldn't do nothing about her mother dying or her best friend being stuck in the AU going through the same day over and over again, but she could do something about finding Ms.Cuddles. What is even more interesting was Damon telling Elena that he and Bonnie had made a pact to kill each other if things got so bad they couldn't take it, what is so interesting about that is the fact that neither of them felt the need to end it while it was the two of them, they kept going for over 4 months, it took for Bonnie to be totally alone to put into action the sucide pact, and I think celebrating first Christmas then her Birthday alone made her realise that she could live like this for a long time. It was heartbreaking listening to the messages she left on the video diary for Damon and the gang, but it was during her message to Jeremy when she remembers her grams words as she tells Jeremy to move on with his life and too stay strong. Jeremy of course was on hand to hear it all, and was desperate to get through to her to try and prevent her taking her life, so was there to witness just as the gas fumes started to take hold of her, the realisation of what grams had told her 'to stay strong' however, it would have been too late had not Jeremy been able to get the garage doors open to let the fumes out, before Liv's actions caused him to be sucked back to the real world. That girl has such bad timing between her and her twin Luke they have been responsible for much that has happened to Damon and Bonnie (ending up in the AU, foiled attempts at rescue and now this latest screw up) Luckily for everyone Bonnie has survived, and is now heading off dressed in Damon's leather jacket and driving his car, armed with the Atlas where he outlined the place she needed to go, to get hold of the blood of the most powerful Bennett ancester Quetsiyah, so she can use it as part of the magic spell to get herself back home. Kat dedicated this episode 'The Day I Tried To Live' to her friend Simone Battle who was part of a girl group, who took her own life last year. So this Bonnie centred episode has a very personal feel to it in regards to this painful subject for Kat. Kat GrahamVerified account @katgraham In loving memory of my friend Simone Battle Im dedicating tomorrow ep of TVD to her. youtu.be/yQ9AGuG59i8 #suicideprevention +18002738255 And well done to Julie and the TVD Executive Producers for doing Happy Birthday Bonnie tweets with hashtags which saw two Bonnie worldwide trends at the same time, and gave the Bonnie centred episode a 1.67M rating.

Oops, I'm reposting this here since this is where everyone is discussing the episode. I have to get used to this whole "putting things in the right threads" thing lol Well I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, I must say. Kai struggling with his new conscience was some of the funniest stuff they have ever done on this show, as far as I'm concerned. I was dying laughing! When he was describing how his eyes were leaking fluid and he couldn't figure out what was going on? LOL And Elena and Damon's reaction's were fantastic. I love love LOVE how Damon manipulated him into helping by talking about poor little Bon Bon all alone on her birthday lol. The look on Kai's face while he was talking was just priceless!! And Elena snickering in the background made it all the more wonderful. And I also love that there's still a little psycho in Kai too, it makes him fascinating. I also really like the Beremy stuff in this episode. Even though it was bittersweet, I was moved to see him finally fighting for her and being a better man. And in a way he also helped her pull it together and fight as well. And I loved how his determination allowed him to save her life, very romantic. And Bonnie ... I definitely teared up several times at her scenes in this episode. That was some great work by Kat, I must say. Very emotional. As for Stefan and Caroline, at first I must say that I really wanted her to punch him square in his stupid face and tell him to leave her the f**k alone! He was being such a d**k, it was really too much there at first. But when it finally became clear that he was actually TRYING to make her angry, to help her get some frustration out, then it actually got sweet. There was some good acting by Paul there too, I thought. You could see the emotion in his eyes as she finally lost her cool with him. He hated hurting her, but he thought it was in her best interest so he kept at it. I liked how there were even a few tears in his eyes as he said those things to her. It was definitely a good moment between them, I thought. Liv and Tyler. Well, honestly, I find myself respecting Tyler a little more again lol. I'm glad he kicked that whiny little brat of a useless piece of crap to the curb. I cannot quite express how much I cannot stand that girl. She is just an awful character. I want her gone. Ok, saved the best for last. DELENA!!! Oh my gosh, so many wonderful things in this episode. Elena's positivity, Damon's honesty, their teamwork, their comradery! They were a real couple in this episode, like we've never gotten to see them before. And I just loved it. And Elena's speech was absolutely wonderful!! Even without her memories, she still knows he's the one. It's perfect. And, I have to say, I actually disagree with you guys about the sex scene. I do love their sexiness together, the hot sex scenes of the past have been very HOT indeed, and so much fun. But what we got in this episode was actually something we haven't had before with them in bed, and that is tenderness. It was sweet, it was romantic, it was love. I thought it was beautiful. I loved seeming them passionately kiss, and have him take her to the bed, and still be kissing and holding each other. And then showing them cuddling afterwards, I thought was so great. All the haters always saying that its just hormones between them can SUCK IT! lol. That was making love, not just sex. And I thought it was really wonderful. I loved it. That's not to say that I wouldn't love to see some hot stuff later on lol. But I liked that their first time after her memories were gone (basically her first time with him, as far as she can remember) was sweet and romantic and loving. I really liked that. Anyways, that's just me.

What a fricken waste of space that girl is, seriously.

It's a total waste of a plot. And a waste of an interesting character. He's supposed to be this friend of Damon, but he hasn't had barely one scene with Damon since he got back! And this stupid obsession with Stefan and Sarah is not only boring, but illogical, and just useless to this plot. Its like they reeeeally want Enzo to be a villain, but they just couldn't think of anything for him to do to make him really threatening. It's almost embarrassing how juvenile this storyline is. It feels like something a teenage would write if they were trying to come up with the plot for a bad romance novel lol. The guy starts flirting with the girl for revenge, but OH NO, he starts to fall for her instead! What will happen???!!! ..... It's just sad lol.

HONORABLE MENTION | On The Vampire Diaries, Kat Graham brought the despair and isolation of being trapped in a prison world by herself to life with heartbreaking intensity. Bonnie’s helplessness was no more evident than when she decided to kill herself, recording one last video message for her friends. “It’s just the loneliness. I can’t take it. And I only know one way to turn it off,” she explained, Graham’s face and voice breaking. But even more impressive was the resilience the actress imbued Bonnie with when she chose to “stay strong” and fight for her life. It wasn’t survival of the fittest, but survival of the bravest.Kat got an Honorable mention for her performance in the Bonnie Birthday episode this Thursday, on TVLine Performer Of The Week. pbs.twimg.com/media/B9IBY-GIAAAgA2L.jpg

What a fricken waste of space that girl is, seriously. She doesn't think much does she? Luke did the merge with Kai so she could live!! He wasn't sure if he would win or not, but one thing was certain is that his sister would be safe. Now Luke is basically a part of Kai so she wants to lash out and kill Kai anyways? Her excuse was that since he's such a pscho, he's gonna kill everyone anyways. Liv, he can't kill the entire coven! There is no way he would find them all. So you would take down Kai, and your entire family because of your stupid logic that doesn't stand anymore because Kai now has good qualities. Maybe I should give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she doesn't realize the truth of what her father was saying and she doesn't realize that Kai has this new found empathy. Although, if she doesn't realize it now, she's a real idiot because Kai couldn't kill her when he had the chance.

Yeah its almost like Enzo is in his own world now, he's got this plot all to himself and it feels alien from the show. Unfortunately Matt's dragged along with him and I still didn't get why he sent Matt out as 'bait' to test Sarah. Wouldn't he commence with his plot anyways? Though I guess that was just for us to get a look at Sarah's character. Also you're right! I guess we are going to be in for him falling for Sarah. Don't really get how this is some form of revenge when he could have killed her and be done with it if he wanted to hit home or tell Damon about the secret. Instead he'll insert himself in her life. It just seems obvious that he'll eventually grow to like/love her as a person. Anyways I'm mainly hoping this plot leads to more Salvatore history. Perhaps Sarah has a feel old ancestry journals or something.
