You know I really wanted to see the Ripper back when that was the storyline but strangely his main fan base did not like it and I think that is why the writers pulled the plug earlier than maybe they would have because they never quite went far enough with him. We never saw him really go all out ripper like we were told he was capable of and I was disappointed, but there is this weird paradox with Stefan and a lot of his fans still see him as the white knight to the point that they refuse to really accept the ripper side of him is there. They made a lot of excuses for it as if it isn't really him. To show that Stefan is this multi layered character that they talk about they have to really put it onscreen so that we can say, "Yup, he's a Ripper, alright." I know it's regular TV and all that but they've gone pretty gory at times and could easily do it with him. All we saw were the end results but not Stefan actually in his prime doing it. How would he be when he was slicing and dicing these people up and then putting them back together again like a puzzle? What would be his mindset? Would he be apologetic while doing it or would he be sarcastic and cruel and maniacally violent about it and then weep like a baby later after realizing what he had done? I remember his journal entries about blacking out while he was doing it and not knowing how he even got to places. Does that mean that he would feel horrible after what he did during the black out? Is that when he put the bodies back together again in a ritualistic attempt to fix what he'd done? What does it even mean to be a ripper? We have never really been shown. There are still a lot of unanswered questions in my mind. The real question is will the writers really go there with Stefan and destroy his white knight image in the minds of some of his fans and show the true Stefan who is messed up in the head beyond belief? Because nobody is a ripper who isn't, but I don't think his loyal fans fully accept that. The one thing I do hope is that they don't find excuses for him being a ripper. I hope they don't have Mommy dearest from the other world somehow having control over Stefan and 'making' him be a ripper or some other retcon of this part of Stefan because Stefan really is only an interesting character to me because of the ripper. There are enough one dimensional white knight characters in the world of TV. Let's see something different with Stefan. Somehow I think they still won't quite go there. I'm sure right now his fans are saying, "It's genetic. He can't help it," but then the same could be said about every psychopath ever.
Way back when I said wouldn't it be a weird ending if it turned out all of this was a manifestation of Stefan's imagination and he was sitting in a psych ward thinking it up, maybe journaling it as if it really happened but it never did? His brother Damon could be a perfectly normal human being who comes to visit him with his wife Elena. That would be a hell of a twist at the end wouldn't it? I am a vampire and this is my story...

I remember Damon telling Enzo the story of Stefan going through his ripper days - most rippers (I assume) don't put their victims back together, but Stefan would feel guilty after his binge and he would then put them back like they were before. It would be interesting to see that side...maybe he comes out of it, see what he did and apologizes to them (as if they were still alive) and puts them back together. Something like that would give Stefan more depth and give us insight to why his character needs to drink animal blood. It'd be like a form of bipolar disorder. It would also give Paul Wesley a bit more acting range so that would be good for him and his body of work as well. Oh my, that ending though. Mind blown. It could be a twist on fight club where all of the things 'Damon' did were actually Stefan projecting because he was trying to suppress that side of himself. Whoa. As for what this will do to Steroline, I think it could be a good roadblock - definitely something different than what we've seen before on this show. It would also make sense because there is really nothing else to stand in the way of this relationship so they have to slow them down somehow.

Yeah the idea that it was like this cookoo Stefan was having tiny breakthroughs of his reality of being a 'ripper/psycho' and the rest of the time he was fighting that reality calling himself the good brother and the white knight and blaming all the bad stuff on his brother Damon and all that...sometimes this show seems so over the top with the 'good Stefan' stuff that I started to wonder if that was intentional because the ending would be something like the above. Of course we'd all want to blow up our TVs if it was, but it would fit, at least to me it seems like it would fit and they could go as many seasons as they wanted before 'endgame' if that were the endgame.
But barring that possibility we still have barely broken the surface on the whole ripper thing and with his Mom being a ripper too maybe they will get into that again.
