Let's talk about Damon's and Stefan's mother for a minute and try to piece a few things together about her from what we know so far. This storyline is interesting to me and I'd like to see what we know, don't know and what we might speculate about her return as we wait for this hiatus to pass.

Some things we've been told about Lily:
Annie Wersching (24) has been tapped to recur in The Vampire Diaries‘ sixth season as a “beautiful and strong” woman named Lily, TVLine has learned exclusively. Also described as “articulate and caustic,” Lily has a reputation for protecting the ones she loves at any cost, though it’s unclear as to who (or what) those loved ones are.
So from this we can most likely gather that whatever she did it was probably to protect her love ones aka Damon and Stefan.

What Wiki says about her:
Season 1
Mrs. Salvatore was mentioned in passing by her husband, Giuseppe, during a flashback in Blood Brothers. Stefan visited his father after he woke up in transition, and planned on dying instead of becoming a vampire. His father was horrified, and told Stefan that he was thankful that Stefan and Damon's mother didn't live long enough to see her sons become demons.
Season 5
In For Whom the Bell Tolls, Damon took Stefan to the Salvatore crypt for Remembrance Day to try to jog Stefan's memory, and revealed that their mother had died of tuberculosis, which was then referred to as consumption.
Season 6
Stefan mentions his mother to Caroline in Prayer For the Dying when he finds her planning Liz's memorial. He tells her of how his mother became ill, and how Stefan would arrange her favorite flowers as an excuse to not have to see his dying mother.
Damon tells Liz in Stay that he puts flowers annually on her grave on the date of her death assuming his humanity is switched on. He also explained that when she died he bailed out on giving the eulogy when he didn't attend the funeral. Liz then asks him to do it for her funeral which he agrees to.
In Let Her Go, Malachai Parker's magic-induced sickness (as a result of the Merge with his brother Luke) causes the prison worlds constructed by the Gemini Coven to start collapsing and intertwining. As a result, Bonnie Bennett (imprisoned in a world meant for Kai during the 1994 eclipse) enters another prison world set in 1903 and built by channeling the power of an aurora. As she is escaping the two intertwining worlds using the power of both the eclipse and the Aurora, Lily approaches her and asks her who she is just as the spell is completed and she is allowed to escape. After reuniting with Damon, Bonnie shows him a recording she had unknowingly been doing and which caught Lily's face on camera. Damon is shocked to recognize his mother.

There's also this which doesn't really line up with anything unless Lily was a 'Fell' which might be kind of bad since the Fells are all about killing vampires but then again so was the Dad and the other founding families. Max: Any new characters coming to The Vampire Diaries? Episode 6.15 will feature a flashback to the 1800's where we will meet August, Lily and Thomas Fell. We will learn a few interesting details about one of the founding families of Mystic Falls and a familiar name may make an appearance. www.spoilertv.com/2014/12/raina-reveals-exclusive-spoilers-and.html

I wonder if it's just Thomas Fell, Lily Salvatore and August Whitmore...as in (Augustines) Obviously this all hasn't been revealed yet in the series but maybe she was protecting Damon and Stefan from August Whitmore between 1864 and 1903.

ehhhh....this kind of sucks. Leave it to Julie Plec to make the Salvatore mother a disappointment...
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Plec to break down what comes next for The CW show.
Now that we've met Damon and Stefan's mother, what can you tease about the insanity she's going to bring?
I think the key word you just used was insanity. Here's a woman they thought was long dead, having died a totally natural, human death. And there she is, what, 65 years later than they thought she died in prison world. Which means she's either wrongly victimized, or entirely deserving of her incarceration. So those are questions that are going to be asked and will start to be delivered next [episode] when we get to know more about her.
How quickly will Damon loop in Stefan about their mother being in the prison world, and how is Stefan going to react to that?
Damon has to ask himself, what do I need to learn about this person before I tell my poor little brother that has mourned her since he was 10 that she might be an evil, evil person trapped in bad places. He's got a bit of a struggle at the top of the next episode trying to figure that out.
How much will we be seeing of Lily's time in this prison world? Will there be a bigger flashback episode or will it be bits and pieces over time?
I think we'll see some flashbacks of her origins [in episode 18] -- of how she ended up there. This is not the last we've seen of this prison world.
Hypothetically, if Lily makes it to the present day and has a reunion with her sons, what would that be like?
Hypothetically, I think it will not necessarily be what it expected from a long-lost mother they loved dearly.

Yep just like JP to think happy is boring lol.
Although seeing her track record with Mikael and Esther or almost anyone who's seen first in 'flashbacks' and then comes to present day, seems like they always have to be out to cause trouble, want revenge etc.
Though this is a bit worst moreso in the case of the Salvatore mom because it's just a character who's never been mentioned since season 1 and it seemed like a story the writers didn't care to touch and since then everyone has sort of had their own headcanon for the Salvatore mom: kind, caring, gentle, loved her boys etc. and now JP is turning that all on its head.
The fact that she was even in a prison world was sort of the first hint that JP possibly wanted go in a darker route with the Salvatore mom. I just hope JP doesn't go overboard like with Esther and make people wish that the writers just left the mom alone and have us be content with our headcanons of her.
