Hello friends, Ok, so here's my take on this topic. For me personally, I would like to see Damon be celibate the whole time Elena is asleep. My reasons are, first that I think he waited almost that long to sleep with anyone else after Katherine, right? There's that scene when he first meets Sage and he tells her he's taken, won't give her the time of day. That was what, 1912, almost 50 years after Katherine died. He had no trouble waiting for Katherine, so in my opinion it would be an insult to Delena if they show us he is not capable of offering Elena the same amount of loyalty that he did Katherine. Also, yeah there's some debate about Elena's loyalty given her judgment or lack-there-of over the past few seasons, so he could pull a "fair is fair" line and act the same way she has. But whether that is fair or not, is that really what we would want to see? Damon is our hero, and I'd like to see him just keep rising above the way he has always done and being the better man. I'd like to see him say something like, "I don't care what she would do, or has done, or what anyone else would do in my place. I love her and that's the end of it."
But here's the other part. I agree that sad sappy 1912 Damon is not what I'd like to see. But there is plenty of potential for sex appeal with him staying celibate. For starters, celibate doesn't have to mean no kissing or touching. I think what they should have him do is fully realize the weapon he has in his possession with how gorgeous and sexy he is and use it to get what he wants. He can flirt, and seduce, and manipulate women's emotions, make them think he wants them, all that "intimacy of the near touch" business. But have him never go further than making out with anyone. He has his priorities straight, let us see that. He can be like those Femme Fatales, using sex and seduction to his advantage, but never crossing the line. And I think that would be incredibly hot. Plus I think he would have fun with it, show a little of the old playful bad boy Damon. But we would all still be able to hold onto the love story, watching him be faithful all the while, no matter what was put in his way.
Anyways, that's how I feel.

Anyways, that's how I feel. I think the whole point of the 1912 flashback was to show how Damon learned that he didn't have to be miserable and alone, just surviving, while he waited to get Katherine back. Even Sage had someone she was waiting for. So for Damon to do that again doesn't seem in character anymore because he already learned that it isn't necessary for him to suffer alone. But that's MY take on the whole 1912 thing. It didn't make him love Katherine any less. It just helped him to live his life a little less painfully until he was able to get her back. I feel like it's the same situation all over again and it shouldn't be an endurance test for Damon to be faithful to her. Would I want him to be? Of course I would! But I'd also want Bonnie to die tomorrow so he wouldn't have to go through all that. So for me I think about how he was in 1912, pretty much miserable and just keeping himself alive but not living and I don't want him to go back to that. I also don't want to watch it. So part of it is not wanting Damon to be pitiful and that's all he really would be if he tried to wait for Elena without trying to live his life. That's how this show would do it and I think that's how he will be when we come back this season and then someone will convince him that he needs to get on with living. He doesn't have to stop loving Elena, but he can't just stop living.

One thing I want to say is that I think a lot of Delena fans are afraid that if Damon decided to get on with living it might mean they would go forward with Bamon and so a lot of the reasoning some fans have for Damon being celibate for 60+ years is so that never happens and I can totally understand that! But for me the line is about 'love.' Damon cannot love anyone else. That is my criteria for this. I managed to deal with all his dalliances before he got with Elena and was still a Delena fan, wanting them to be together and I feel it's similar now. The only difference is that he has been together with her, but he can't be with her now.
The way I look at Bamon is that if Damon developed feelings for Bonnie then we wasted 6 years of our lives watching a bunch of BS, pure and simple. So I don't consider that OK in any way, not Bonnie nor anyone else. He said he'd love Elena until his dying breath and I expect him to live up to that. If they ever even started to go there, I'd be out the door. So, to make myself clear, I could handle another "Andie" but I do not want Damon to have feelings or even be confused about feelings for anyone but Elena.

Another thing that sticks out to me with 1912 is that this was still during the 'resentment' days of Damon's vampirism. So he was essentially just going through the motions, existing. When he was hungry, he'd feed and that'd be the end of that. Sage showed him how to have fun with feeding/being a vampire and it's a lesson he taught Elena when she turned as well.
So I don't really see Damon regressing to the point he was in 1912, where he would altogether stop having fun with being a vampire or just become a complete shell of his former self. After 1912 he no longer acted like that when it came to waiting for Katherine and Elena even told him not to do that exact thing. So I'm not sure if I necessarily see a Damon who's just completely down and distraught.
JP/CD, I forget who stated what, but mentioned it wouldn't make sense to give Damon a love interest right away. But let's say Damon's basically mopey/going through the motions. Will he be that way until he gets a love interest as in having a love interest is the solution to that problem? As in the first six eps (or arc) will be building up to that love interest plot?

No I don't want him to have a LOVE interest either, but I want him to go on living. I want him to find a purpose in his life beyond Elena, with Elena always being his soul mate that he loves and knows he will reunite with down the road, but I don't want him to stop living in the meantime. I want him to have fun and enjoy his life. I'm afraid if he's hanging around with Alaric they're going to be pretty 'whoa is me, life sucks' for a while when they first start the season. I also don't want him to have to turn off his emotions to have fun so I hope it doesn't come to that either.
I mean when you think about season one Damon, what comes to mind is that he wasn't taking anything seriously. He was just having fun with it and he was a riot. I wouldn't mind going back to that part of Damon where he just enjoys his life and doesn't take it so serious for a while as he waits for Elena's return.

Oh cause that's what I was confused on at first regarding the love interest (or an Andie type relationship. Not sure if love interest is the right word since I don't necessarily mean it in the sense for him to fall/have conflicted/complicated feelings over said woman). Whether it's expected of him to get one to go on living. Like him not having a relationship with a woman automatically means he's miserable so he needs one so that it doesn't seem like he's just waiting around.
And now I'm hoping that first part wasn't confusing cause it's hard to word it right lol. This was kind of my main beef that sort of goes beyond the Damon celibate question. It was why does he have to necessarily have a romance plot to be considered having fun or to get him out of a funk when he could just as easily just go to a club and dance and still be flirty with girls and use sex appeal without having to bother with him going into a romance as MissMystic put it. Or another plot could be him actively involved in tracking down the heretics, much like a mirror to season 1 where this time instead of being out to get residents of Mystic Falls, he's out there protecting them.
These were just some small ideas that I would consider more fun to watch instead of having to sit through the writers shoving another female at him. I know there's no competition for Delena, or threat that he'd fall out of love with Elena obviously, but it's just personal preference to just watch something a bit more entertaining than seeing yet another romance being shoved in our faces. Again it's not like I'll be that upset if it happens, only Bamon happening would make me get that rant-y (which now we know there's nothing to worry about on that front), it'd be more of a disappointment that they just decided to go with a lackluster storyline for the character. Something that we've already seen and leaves much to be actually excited and hyped about.

Well all I have been able to gleen from the writers double speak is that 'right now' there won't be a love interest for Damon and I hope as far as 'love' goes that there never is one. An Andie is not a 'love interest' in my book. She was just a 'distraction' (Damon's word) to keep his mind off Elena. That's the idea here as well. I don't want him moping around. Could the writers maybe write something interesting enough that we wouldn't miss Damon's sexy nakedness? I'm not sure. I already miss it after a rather lackluster season 6 (except the loft scene which was for too darn short for my taste!) I want to be entertained, damnit! At the end of the day that's why I watch and a broody, sad, sexless and moody Damon won't entertain me. I thought his sex scene with Rebekah was one the hottest things they ever did on this show and it didn't take anything away from Delena. In my opinion, they could still have that kind of stuff and not ruin Delena but I understand why some people don't agree with that. I feel like as long as there is a line he doesn't cross into 'love' then nothing he can do will disappoint me. They did mention he would be blurring some lines and I don't know what exactly THAT means, but I hope it means that he will act like I think he will act.
