Now that Elena is going to be gone for a good many years (until Bonnie dies) and Damon will have to wait to be reunited with her, do you think he should remain celibate in the meantime? Give us your reasoning for your answer.

I'm going to say, it depends, because for me it depends on the circumstances of why he wouldn't remain celibate. I would be OK with him finding some 'comfort' after a while but not OK with him falling in love with someone else. That's kind of where I draw the line on it. 60+ years is a long time and Elena did tell Damon to live his life so I don't know that she would even expect him to stay celibate for all that time, but I think that she would want him to keep loving her and since Damon did say he'd love her til his dying breath, I expect him to keep his word.

I guess it's a whole different animal when you put it in the context of Damon just having sex with someone and then him falling in love with someone. Obviously for him to fall in love with someone else would be OOC. But the thing is I can't count on JP's writing to distinguish that without making it look like Damon has indeed moved on from Elena. I mean with the few scenes Damon has shared with Bonnie this season (jump hug, forehead kiss, carrying her bridal style etc.) fans already call that moving on from Elena/falling in love with Bonnie. The sudden amount of news articles covering Bamon and them becoming a couple and the recent nominations for this pairing as a legit ship shows further proof of that. It's like for some reason JP's writing always has one fandom seeing it one way and another the other way. It's so annoying.
I also have to remember that Damon's not going to exist in his own bubble with these things. He never does. The characters aren't just going to nod their heads and be all, 'Oh I get it. He's just using her for comfort, but he's still in love with Elena of course. I'm completely fine with that.' There's no way we're not going to have Stefan, Bonnie, or Caroline, running their mouth about how he's given up on Elena or how he couldn't even go ten years without jumping into bed with another woman (let's give that one to Stefan). Oh and I bet someone's going to bring up Katherine! Come on someone has to. And we can't even use 'logic' to say, 'Well actually with Katherine's case he was technically still having fun with woman...' because you know the show's going to rewrite their own canon ala Stefan style and make it seem like Damon actually waited 145 years with Katherine while with Elena he barely made it a few years.
Or I see Caroline/Stefan in their own bubble and not caring and Bonnie will be the one who's on Damon's back about the other woman. Oh but then fans will be all, 'Aw! Bonnie's jealous!' or just imagine Bonnie going on with Caroline about Damon and this new woman and Caroline will do her typical Damon jabs, 'This is Damon we're talking about. You actually expected him to stay faithful and not sleep with multiple woman?' and have Bonnie counter her for Caroline to raise an eyebrow and go, 'Wait... you're not jealous are you?' or something to bait Bamon.
I can already imagine a scene where this other woman will go up to Bonnie and talk to her as if she has feelings for Damon and tell Bonnie to back off or something lol. And then we're in for another triangle with Bonnie, Damon, and this other woman! Yay that'll be fun to watch! Also as I stated back in the other thread, why would this woman just willingly leave Damon and not put up any fight about it? It's unrealistic and shows the relationship was just there for no reason at all then just to bait. In fact it'll probably be used more for Bamon angst than Delena. Elena's not there so it's not like the conflict is going to involve her physically and they can just use the excuse, 'Well Elena did tell me to live my life.' as Elena's 'approval' while Bonnie is the one who's up in arms about everything and it'll feel like this other woman angst is more for Bonnie than Elena.
This is why I don't care for the drama that will come with Damon using a woman for comfort. I know how JP writes and it won't just be some fun thing that the Damon character can use to get him through the years when obviously everyone will be on his back about it and it'll be like season 1 and 2 again. It's boring as all get out to watch Damon be the punching bag of the show and everyone so focused on one's character god dang love life when the show could focus on other things that don't have to deal with unnecessary angst for a pairing that's not even there.
I also don't take the '60 years' thing so seriously. I know the show isn't going to drag out the 60 years. Are we going to see year 30 with a middle aged Matt and Bonnie or are we ever going to witness year 50 when the humans are old and Alaric is well into a nursing home? Those are arbitrary numbers to mean that won't mean a thing. If season 7 is the last year then the show will only focus on what seems like one year out of that whole '60 years'. And even if there's a season 8, they can't time jump another 7 or so years because then the human characters will have to look like they actually did age. So 60 years means nothing to me when I know the show will act like a time skip doesn't even exist in the first place.

I think you just revealed all of season 7, lol There's really nothing we can do about the fact that they decided to keep the series going without Elena and since they did, we know they will find ways to create drama. Of course they will! I am seeing the Bonnie/Damon thing being extrememly UNpopular, however, so I don't know how much real movement there will be on that, other than fanbaiting, as you said.
Every comment I read after Caroline Dries saying that she didn't foresee Bamon in the future was basically, Thank God! I think there might have been one Bamon supporter in amongst those. This show is extremely sensitive to what fans want in the end. When we hated the 'Enzo hates Stefan' storyline they quickly changed course and admitted to what a flop it turned out to be. I believe it will be the same with Bonnie/Damon. They were better as frenemies and if the 86% against Bamon poll was any indication, most fans want it to stay that way.
But this isn't really a debate about the validity of Bamon, though I know it's at the top of our minds of ways they could ruin Delena. It's really, should Damon move on at all or should he just wait out the years without the companionship of women? That thought is kind of sad to me given the type of character that he is. He loves to have fun and being miserable for 60 years would make him bitter again and I don't want to see that. I think it would change him and not in a good way. It would be more like an endurance test than something for him to look forward to when Elena wakes up. Damon puts his heart and soul into his love for Elena and that isn't going to change no matter what he does to waste his time in the meantime.
I mean look at him in 1912 after trying all that time to be faithful to Katherine. He was a shell of himself just alive but not living. Since he's already been there done that and learned how to do it different, I don't think he's going to attempt to do it again. At first he might, hoping beyond hope that Bonnie will croak sooner rather than later and hating himself for having the thought. I think that's where we will find Damon when the series returns and if it is 7 years later than he's already waited that long which, I have to say, is longer than Elena waited to see if they could get Damon back before she gave up and moved on with Liam. What was it, 4 months?? It may be that they did that storyline on purpose for just this reason. Elena fans can't even argue that she gave up awfully quick on Damon. I was not happy about that, but how could she blame Damon if he did move on? For all they know Bonnie could live over a hundred years like that other witch who slowed down her aging! If Elena gave him crap he would only have to say, "One word...Liam."

I'm not really sure if Liam is a good comparison given the circumstances. As far as Elena knew Damon was dead for good on the Other Side with no hope that he was ever coming back and then Elena had her memories of Damon erased so it wasn't even really Elena, just a fake shell of herself. I didn't care for the storyline either mind you, but the circumstances to me seem hardly comparable, especially since there was no way the show would have gone with a time skip of 7 years in that instance for Damon/Bonnie being trapped on the Other Side. That's a bit too impractical.
But that's still sort of my point, even in that instance with Elena's memories erased and having no hope of Damon ever coming back, the main reaction of Delena fans was to see Elena not be involved with any men whatsoever. The writers didn't even go as far as to make Liam/Elena have actual sex with each other since obviously they knew how well that would boil over with Delena fans, and most of us hated Liam. I often feel like sometimes Elena can't get away, or is not allowed to get away with things like this with most Delena fans. Her character seems to be held to stricter rules when it comes to things she's allowed and not allowed to do.
In my case I'm just sticking to what I stuck to before. I hated the storyline where the writers tried to get her to 'move on' with Liam so naturally I hate the same type of thing they're going to feed us with Damon. I know not all Delena fans think/view things as I do with these characters but it's my mindset.
But yeah Elena is not here and the show will still try to recreate that 'will they, won't they' drama even with Elena still asleep. Sheesh for all we know Elena could wake up and have this crazy story of how some 'being' talked to her and gave her doubts on her relationship with Damon. Who knows with JP who's Queen of angst at this point lol.
So yeah I'm not saying I don't expect the writers to do something like this at all, I am fully expecting these type of storylines, which is why I rather do without because I know the writing will be subpar at best.
But the funny thing is. I'm like on the fence between two mindsets. One where I want them to still find someway to honor Delena's relationship, prove that they are true endgame and that their love for each other was not just words and epic speeches and hope for good in character characterizations with Damon's struggle with waiting for Elena and how he deals with the temptation to biding his time and another part of me just literally wants JP to do her worst. Completely make the characters be OOC, throw caution to the wind with Bamon, screw over Delena and make me completely numb to the series overall so that I really don't care anymore to what they do and have this show no longer stress me out. If season's 7 is over and it's not as bad as the fandom thought, I can watch it and be no problem, if it's bad and the writing is laughable well at least I didn't lend my viewership and I can pretend that none of this ever existed.
So I guess my answer can fall into the 'It depends' category cause it really will depend on how JP handles this overall. I mean they could throw Damon a woman, say it's for comfort but still emphasize that he's in love with Elena and whoop that's it. That's all we get about it, now this woman will guest star every other episode or so, have Damon do something romantic with her, but don't really delve more into it than that. Or this could have some more wait to it, a good characterization would have this woman actually help trigger something new in Damon that we never seen before, give us some flashbacks, give us more history to the character.
And yes this isn't about Bamon. But we again can't pretend that this character is going to exist in a vacuum. Bonnie's character will be spending more time with Damon this season and I don't see her not talking about Damon's newfound relationship. And since Elena is not physically there, the angst and drama lays on Bonnie's shoulders.
I don't want to see a woman thrown at Damon for the hell of it, if it creates some more background and story then great, if not, then you might as well pair him with Bonnie if you want to create actual believable angst for Delena, otherwise every knows the guest star is going to die in like a view episodes, verses Bonnie who's a main character and is Elena's friend.
Going back to how Damon bide's his time. That could be interesting storytelling depending on how the writers go about it. I mean will he seek the comfort of woman, will he just turn it off and feel nothing, will he go back to having 'fun' as a vampire and be destructive, will he put all his effort and energy for the future, like as you mentioned securing the house/decorating for their human lives or investing his time into protecting Mystic Falls/tracking down heretics. There's so much interesting stuff that they could do with this that don't have to resort to, welp put him with a woman and now let's go back to Steroline drama. It comes down to whether I want to watch an interesting/fully developed storyline or whether the writers will suddenly give the half-ass treatment to Damon as they done with Stefan, and not care about any depth and development to the actual character in favor of just creating unnecessary and boring story arcs/baiting Bamon.

Well this is Mystic Falls and Elena always knew there was the possibility that Damon could be brought back. They'd done it before. It wasn't outside the realm of possibility in their world. Yet she chose to give up on Damon and she chose to have her memories erased. Those were all her choices even knowing how much she loved him! She was willing to forget him and move on with her life even though there was still a chance he could come back to her. In a way it is worse that she did that because I'm only talking about Damon biding his time, not giving up on Elena entirely as if she will never come back to him. If he did that I'd be disappointed in him for that choice, too! I never agreed with what she did and nobody else can be blamed for it. They were her choices. Even Damon struggled with the fact that she gave up on him in such a short amount of time. So Liam was a result of all of those choices she made and that is still entirely on her. She doesn't get a free pass for her choices. Was it understandable? Sure it was! But so would this be for Damon.
Also we don't know if Elena had sex with Liam. That was never something they ever touched upon. We assume she didn't but had Damon not come back when he did, she certainly would have. She wasn't in love with him though. That much we do know. Damon still handled it pretty well when she still kept dating him after he was back! I mean the old Damon would have snapped his neck and been done with him. LOL

I think if I knew for sure that Nina was coming back I would feel differently. That's the difference to me. We know Nina is gone and may never come back. When Damon was on the other side, obviously he was coming back to continue on the show. I don't think it's a case of Elena being held to higher standards. If it was the whole Liam thing would've made a much bigger impact. None of us know what they are going to do but we do know what they have done before and I expect some of the same. My guess is Damon will struggle for a while with the celibacy thing and hate it the whole time thinking this is his life for the next 60 years. Some hot chick will come along and tempt him or something and Bonnie will be there nagging him all the way...same old same old. So my thinking about this is, assuming that happened, how would I feel about it? Everything they have said about Bonnie is really that she will be the mouthpiece to keep him as moral as possible while Elena sleeps so he doesn't forget that she is there waiting asleep for him. That doesn't sound like romantic Bamon to me and I think alot of DE fans have gotten way too hysterical about the possibility. Just because Bamon fans want it and talk about it and it managed to get some traction because of the 1994 storyline doesn't mean it's going to go romantic, especially with Elena sitting comatose in a box waiting to be reunited with Damon. I know alot of Delena fans will freak if Damon gets physical with another woman but I personally see it being within the realm of possibility with his character and with this show. However I do not think they will ever make him fall out of love with Elena.

What if the witch/siphon/vamp chick Valerie gets a hankering for Damon and finds a way to put Elena in her body? Now that would be angst! But that's a topic for the Spoiler/speculation thread.

I believe you just solved S7. If Nina does not come back, they are going to have to replace her. Putting her in a new body would do that and allow the series to move forward. Damon can bide his time all he wants but we are not going to see Celibate Damon for 60 years. Having said that, I do think it is possible to write Damon drinking blood and dancing with sorority sisters while Elena is asleep. That way we get to see sexy Damon but we won't know whether he is having sex with them because we won't see it on camera. And for me that is the answer: I don't think he should stay celibate while waiting for Elena, but I don't necessarily want to see it. And I don't want judgy witches calling him out on it.

Right we don't know if Elena had sex with Liam for the same reasons. They never showed it, but it doesn't mean it never happened. They could do something similar with Damon I suppose, except we do want to see those sexy shirtless scenes, right? It's like the scene with Vicki Donovan. Some people think he had sex with her, others don't. We will never really know will we?

LOL I feel like saying that Elena 'knew' that Damon was coming back is just projecting our own knowledge onto the characters. We as viewers, of course know that Damon wasn't dead because we get more insight into the situation than the characters on screen do. If Elena had that knowledge and knew there was a possibility for him to be back, she sure as hell wouldn't have been sitting around and crying about it. Or begging Stefan for some ounce of hope that there was a way to get him back from the Other Side. Honestly I'm not saying, yeah Elena did the right thing by erasing her memories! I'm just trying to view it realistically.
Also not sure I'm really following the second paragraph. There are a lot of things that 'aren't touched upon' in the show. Something like whether Liam and Elena had sex is something that would have been made obvious to the audience, not some hidden secret fact. And if Elena slept with Liam, it would have meant she developed more than casual feelings for him to take him to bed. It doesn't line up with how she acted towards Liam where she was clearly not really into him, and I don't see why Liam would keep quiet about having sex with Elena either? It doesn't add up story wise. And what 'could' have happened is just speculation at this point. A number of things could have happened with a lot of different situations. It could be turned around just as easily to say that Bonnie and Damon slept in the AU world and we don't have any proof that they didn't or that if they hadn't come back when they did they would have developed more stronger feelings for each other.
But eh I still don't care to really play the, well she did this so he can do that game! It gets really comical to what people are allowed to get away with. Because of Liam, Damon's allowed that Freebie, but then when Elena wakes up, and drama ensues where she's tempted and sleeps with another guy, suddenly she has a freebie cause of what took place with Damon and another woman but now Damon gets a freebie because of this other thing that Elena did that was worst. It just gets really old and I don't like to pit characters I ship against each other like that. At that point shipping becomes less fun, and more of a stress filled chore.

I think if Nina doesn't come back, they probably won't bring the Elena character back either. I say that because why not just body jump Elena for the finale to actually keep the character there in the first place? Sounds like the most logical idea to me. It was a bit unexpected for Nina to leave and if they still had stories to tell with the character that were necessary, story arcs lined up for Delena etc. then they would have body jumped her like they did with Rebekah's character. It's not like they need Nina to keep the character around when they've already delved into body jumping on other occasions before.
I think the reason they didn't do the most obvious choice is probably because they don't really care to bring the character of Elena back because it gives them an out to focus on other things that don't necessarily involve the triangle.
I honestly really don't care who plays the Elena character, as long as the 'Delena' relationship manages to not get screwed over after all these years of investment. But have a feeling that the Elena character was a liability to JP so yeah not really expecting 'Elena' to show up till finale or even not at all. Honestly wouldn't surprise me. *shrug*

I said Elena knew there was always a possibility in Mystic Falls. She gave up in 4 months rather than keep hoping that he might still be alive somewhere and make his way back to her. That's canon. As for the Liam situation, well, Elena did sleep with Stefan in episode 10. I'm just saying, she doesn't have to be totally madly in love before sleeping with someone. Again we really just don't know but we know she was 'dating' Liam, as in she dated him more than once so it was a little more than just a date. What that entailed the writers chose not to delve into. I'm not saying she did, but I am saying we really don't know for certain. As for Bamon, if you ask the Bamons they did sleep together in the AU, dotcha know? I'm not trying to play the she did it so he can do it game either, just pointing out how quickly Elena moved on and was prepared to live her life without Damon, which certainly would have included a love life and sex. She was saying goodbye to Damon permanently as far as she was concerned at that point. I don't think Damon would move on that quick anyway. If it has been 7 years though, they might have done that for a reason, so they can get past the thought that Damon ran right out and got involved with someone else. If it's 7 years later, it's a respectable amount of time later and certainly more than 4 months. Of course it's never gonna be long enough for any of us because what we really want are Delena back together again but if that's not going to happen, then what should Damon do? That's the topic of this debate. What would be acceptable and realistic under the circumstances he is in?

Not to... suddenly bail... but... lol. I really just don't care to argue about Delena in this sort of way? It's kind of not fun and stressful and reminds me how crappy and bad part of DE's journey has been written. And it's about stuff that has long since past with again crappy writing that leaves many plot holes and speculations, that a part of me doesn't really care to defend anymore or want to have to actually think back to remember. So I suck at debates lol. I am also extremely lazy.
So yeah it's good for those of you who don't really care either way. Guess I'm tired of recycled storylines that JP continually does. There's already been an Andie/Rose type thing so wanted to see if JP would have Damon handle things in a different sort of way. Oh well. I know he's not going to fall out of love with Elena obviously. There's JP's tweet about Damon committing the next 60 years of his life waiting for Elena, so whatever happens in between is all moot I guess. Of course I also don't have to watch the 'inbetween' and just skip to the DE reunion at the end. If there is going to be one. Just to be on the safe side I'll still wait till the coast is clear to view this season and not get disappointed by JP/CD in terms of writing ever again.

Of course I also don't have to watch the 'inbetween' and just skip to the DE reunion at the end. If there is going to be one. Just to be on the safe side I'll still wait till the coast is clear to view this season and not get disappointed by JP/CD in terms of writing ever again. Yes there certainly has been alot of plot holes and disappointments with Delena. To go back to what you said about them not bringing Elena back, I don't know if that is really set in stone at this point. Let's say the season starts to fail spectacularly, which is a very real possibility, because they keep plodding along with the whole Bonnie and Damon friendship and other storylines nobody cares about like Enzo and Lily. I could see them finding a way to bring Elena back in some form, though it likely will not be Nina. That won't help the loss of the Nina fans, but it could keep the Delena fans onboard to see how they play all that out and we'd be back to the Delena story again. I think they just got to a place where they didn't know what else to do with Delena. They didn't want to lose the popularity of the couple by just having them 'happy' so they are trying this, but kept Elena on the backburner so she is still an option. And I don't feel like we are arguing about Delena so much as looking at it from different angles. We both love Delena and wish this mess never happened, but here we are and so now we have to think about what might happen next and how it will be handled. The Delena storyline was really the thread that ran all the way through the series and to have it gone seems like the story is forever changed and possibly over to me. It may well be that all these stories they have yet to tell are of no interest to me. Delena pretty much held the show together. Without it we have alot of undeveloped characters left that I don't even care about. Really the only thing keeping me interested in watching is what they do with Damon and I do want it to honor Elena. I do want him to always love her and plan to be with her in 60 years, but I don't want him to be miserable in the meantime. I want him to live his life as best he can without her. Watching a miserable, drunken, pining for Elena, Damon is not fun. I'd rather that he set his sights on the future with her but live his life in between to the best of his ability. The idea that I put in the S&S thread that he can be Matt's supernatural partner and take out baddies is really what I want to see but I haven't heard anything like that as of yet. Romance would then be secondary to the plot that he and Matt are determined to keep MF safe. For Damon it would be to keep it safe for Elena's return one day. That sort of underlying plot I would love, but instead we are hearing he is off in Europe on an extended vacation drinking his guts out with Alaric and Bonnie. I just hope that only lasts one episode. but I'm guessing he's been gone a long time if Mystic Falls is wrecked.
