Hello friends, I was only recently introduced to the whole idea of the One True Pairing, and I thought it might make an interesting discussion thread. Apparently there is some open endedness regarding what an OTP really is, or should be, or is to each person personally. The general idea is that it is meant to be THE couple, the one you think is the best, the most compelling, who's story means the most to you, who you love more than any other couple. There is some discussion as to weather this is ONE couple out of every show or movie or book or anything else you have ever seen, OR if you can have one OTP for every show/movie/book or whatever else.
I think all of us here are romantics, otherwise we wouldn't love TVD as much as we do. So I'm sure we must all have romances that are close to our hearts, characters that we route for above all others, and lots of different and individual reasons why we ship certain couples. So what are your thoughts on OTPs? Do you have just ONE? Do you have one for every show you love? Who are your OTPs and why do you love them? Let's share!

Well, as I said in the other thread I kind of think of an OTP as THE couple of all couples that is my favorite and for me that is Delena. There are other shows and couples that I watch but none that I have followed as close as Delena in a long time. Way back when, I shipped Skate on LOST and at that time I would have called that my OTP. I followed a LOST forum and had to watch it every week. I do ship other couples but not with the same passion that I shipped these two. I can wait to watch those other shows and don't go looking to discuss or search for spoilers or any of that stuff like I do with TVD and did with LOST (though I did no searching for spoilers back then!). I don't know what the next show will be that will really grab my attention after TVD. It kind of takes a pretty special show/couple for me to do that.

Echoing a bit of what I said in the other thread about Delena being my OTP as it's really the only ship that I've joined a forum for the first time to talk about and I watch videos, read lengthy essays, tweet, reblog edits on tumblr etc. the only ship that I'm so immersed in of this caliber.
Not to mention writing lengthy posts on Delena, I'm still amazed at the number of posts I have in this forum, heck look at all of our posts. We talk a lot about Delena haha.
Also watching and keeping up with this show live, and when I miss it, it's the first thing I make sure to watch every morning.
And as someone who likes to write and fill in the blanks with certain characters, I do not do that for Delena. I feel as if I don't really need to. The show has given us some of the best moments and quotes.
I'm not sure what I'd do if Delena doesn't end up together or get a happy ending. It feels as if they just have to, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I'd be completely devastated to say the least.

This is the first and only forum I've ever joined, so its safe to say that Delena is up there for me for sure. I'm a huge romance fan, so pretty much every show I watch there is a couple I route for (except Supernatural lol, only show I watch that doesn't have romance in it). Some of my favorite couples from shows I watch currently include, Jamie and Claire (Outlander) Oliver and Felicity (Arrow) Regina and Robin Hood (Once Upon A Time)
But my top 3 of all time, I think, would be 3. Logan and Veronica (Veronica Mars) 2. Delena 1. Buffy and Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
If we are going for the OTP of all time and you only get one, mine would be Buffy and Spike. I didn't really know what "shipping" was back then, and it never would have occurred to me to try and join a forum. But I would be all over that today if the show was still on. I just finished rewatching it with a friend from beginning to end. I thought maybe now that I was older I wouldn't feel quite the same way about it as I did back then, but I was wrong lol. It's still just as intense, just as moving to me. The build up of their romance is very very slow, and there is a lot of terrible crap you have to live through, but it's so worth it. There are a lot of similarities between Delena's story and Spuffy's. I think that's what drew me to TVD in the first place. Especially in the beginning of Delena's story. Buffy and Spike are like exaggerated versions of Elena and Damon, to me. Buffy is a virtuous heroine would sees the world in black and white, and Spike is a demon with no soul who for some reason has held on to pieces of his humanity in spite of that fact. In TVD world vampires still have their souls, so Damon is not just an evil demon. And Elena is virtuous, but she doesn't see the world as black and white as Buffy does. Its really interesting, the similarities and the differences. I would have loved some type of crossover moment where Buffy and Elena could have a talk and Spike and Damon could do the same lol. I think they could learn a lot from each other.

I think OTP can be across many shows but for each of us there is probably one or two couples that stand out as THE one. Obviously Delena is THE one I have been (or probably ever will be) the most invested in, so if they crush my soul, I'll be quite devastated - Moreso for this pairing though than any other. I've never seen a pairing so epic (I didn't watch Buffy so I can't compare to them). Some couples I have shipped hard include: Brucas (One Tree Hill) Skate (LOST) Jacey (is that what they would be called? Dawson's Creek).
Some ships I've rooted for but it wouldn't crush me if they didn't end up together - so they wouldn't classify (for me) as OTP: Olitz (Scandal) Ross/Rachel (Friends and Suits) Blair/Chuck (Gossip Girl) Rufus/Lily (Gossip Girl) Tim/Lyla (Friday Night Lights)
Um, I apparently have a thing for the bad boys getting the girl, lol.
What I don't get is when someone can ship one person with two people - seems wrong to me. Like I've seen the same person ship Brooke/Lucas and Brooke/Julian. Or Sawyer/Kate and Sawyer/Juliet. Like if the one relationship doesn't work out and they have chemistry with the secondary person, that's fine. No, that doesn't work for me so if you guys can do that, please explain to me. I guess in that case it's about your main person being happy? Because in both those two examples they weren't rival ships, so I guess that would be the logic.

I have alot of couples I like, too, but wouldn't call OTPs just because...meh...it wouldn't kill me if they didn't end up together. I did quit watching The 100 when they killed off half the only couple I cared to watch the show for. So usually that is the result for me, if they don't get together I stop watching, unless, like Skate (LOST), they are sneaky bastards and slip it in at the end....I will always be pissed off at that show for doing that! I hated Jack and his holier than thou attitude! I know they wanted me to like him but I never could. Some other couples like Olicity, I want together. I also like Iris and Barry a little bit more than Barry and Caitlin, because I think Caitlin belongs with Ronnie on The Flash (and I don't even know what they call these pairs!) Also I like Hook and Emma...but these are all pretty mild preferences for me which goes along with how not really invested in the shows that I am. Oh, there is Harvey and Donna on Suits and they HAVE to get a happy ending for me. It would disappoint me if they didn't. Poor Harvey and his abandonment issues and Donna who has been waiting so damn patiently for him to get his s*** together...yeah they have to happen...someday.

I hated Jack and his holier than thou attitude! I know they wanted me to like him but I never could. OMG I'm so happy you said that! I never saw the final season and I'm watching it now and it is so painful for me because I ship them and have been hoping that they would not let me down and put them back together!!!! I only have 5 episodes left and I've been wanting to know but haven't looked it up so now it gives me more motivation to watch the end!!! I know they wanted us to like her with Jack but nope - not me. I never thought they had as much chemistry as she and Sawyer. As for Harvey and Donna - I'm OK with them getting together at the end of the series. I feel like Harvey does need to get his sh*t together or else Donna will end up getting hurt as he pulls away from another relationship yet again. That's probably where all of this therapy will come into play. But yeah, happy ending end game for sure.

Yes I find it very hard to multiship someone. Usually if I like them with one person, I'm hard pressed to take a liking of them with someone else. Of course I guess that's in the case of rival ships. As you said if it's just a character you really love/enjoy and it's about their happiness then it may be easier to like them with several of the people they interact with. In Scandal I'm rooting for Olivia and Fitz, but I also don't mind her scenes with Jake. I'm more neutral to it than a multishipper since I do cheer more when Olitz overcome obstacles and celebrate when Olake gets shut down lol. Though I'm just really glad that it doesn't grind my gears to see Olake scenes like in the case of SE/DE so its really nice to not get so worked up over a supposedly triangle.

Oh man, I totally forgot about Joey and Pacey when I was doing mine! I was definitely hard core into that ship back in the day. I guess I have a thing for the bad boy getting the girl too huh? LOL. And yeah, I was a Ross and Rachel fan too for sure. Friends is always a filler show for me when I have nothing else to watch. I can watch that a million times and not get sick of it lol.
I don't know if I would say I could ship one person with 2 people at the same time. But I will say that I have been swayed by the storyline before and started liking a couple that wasn't originally THE couple. Like One Tree Hill, I like Lucas and Payton, but when they started the Lucas with Brooke storyline I found myself liking it. I hated the way that romance ended and I was definitely invested in it. But when it was over and it went back to Lucas and Brooke I liked them again too. I don't know, its weird I guess. I definitely didn't want him with both at the same time lol, but when the story progressed in each direction I was able to go with it and still be invested somehow. Same thing with Arrow. First season I was definitely rooting for Oliver and Laurel, but when Felicity started to be in the picture I changed ships. I guess it just depends on the characters and how the story progresses for me. Like with Dawson and Joey, in the beginning I was into them too, but when Pacey came into the picture I never looked back, and then I started to kind of hate Dawson lol.
I don't know, that's the best insight I can give I guess lol.

I liked your perspective on the shifting romance storylines and how the show made you feel invested each time with each change and not angry/annoyed. I think in cases like that, that's how you know the writing is truly good and not mediocre. You should never have to question the direction and character development of certain storylines if the story is being true and makes sense. Obviously TVD has a lot to learn in that category with all of the fan pandering to keep both SE and DE happy, which is why things turned into a train wreck with the triangle and why everyone was getting tired of it.
Though in the case of Brucas, while I haven't seen the show in it's entirety myself, I have read from some of the members on here that Brucas perished because of real life relationship drama, if I'm remembering correctly. Things like that can't be predicted but it honestly does suck when it has such a great effect on the storyline. I'm just glad in TVD's case with Nian's breakup, at least Delena didn't come to an abrupt end and had the characters move on or something.

I agree. And yes you're right about Brucas. Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush were engaged (or briefly married, I forget which), and then they split up. So their ending on the show was abrupt, and in my opinion OOC for the character of Brooke, so that was a shame. But eventually when things moved back to Payton I thought they managed it smoothly and it made sense. And yeah, we are lucky that they didn't end Delena that way. I have a feeling they played with the idea briefly in season 5 when they broke them up then, but after seeing the fan's reactions they probably realized that wasn't going to work. Which is probably part of the reason Nina left. She probably realized the story was never going to get away from Delena and just couldn't handle it anymore.
THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T SH*T WHERE YOU EAT, PEOPLE!! lol

Yes great examples and I totally get switching ships when the chemistry and the writing moves you to do so. I felt the same with those examples too. So I guess if the intent is that it starts as a triangle - which promotes rival shopping - it would be hard to justify shipping the opposite couple. That makes sense. In Delenas case, I started out shopping Delena from 1x2 because I felt the underlying pull between them so I was always rooting for them and there was no going back, lol. Yes, I think Sofia and Chad were briefly married so when they got divorced (which I think was messy) it just was not working and they had to switch gears - which was such a bummer!
