IAN SOMERHALDER DIRECTS THE EPISODE — In an attempt to make things right with his brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) offers to have Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) scar magically transferred to him, only to discover that doing so may come with some unexpected consequences. With time running out and Rayna (guest star Leslie-Anne Huff) closing in on Stefan, Valerie (guest star Elizabeth Blackmore) desperately attempts to reason with Damon before it’s too late. Elsewhere, after being framed for breaking Rayna out of The Armory, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) attempts to clear his name, but not before a violent run-in with Nora (guest star Scarlett Byrne) forces him to make an upsetting discovery. Zach Roerig also stars. Ian Somerhalder directed the episode written by Melinda Hsu Taylor (#716). Original airdate 4/1/2016.

The heretics went from being over the top and powerful witch/vampire hybrids to being severely nerfed as the seasons went on. One moment they can siphon or destroy something on a grand scheme and the next you have Mary confined to her bed. Pills that are poisonous to witches? How convenient. They are also half vampires right? I don't get why that had Mary so bedridden. I also didn't get what the heck happened in the ending scene with the two cars? I thought they were riding in the same car? The video player where I watched it had the video moving around like a slide show so that played a bit into why I didn't fully understand those sequence of events. Though I find it silly that no one's ever thought about destroying the sword before, until now.

Yeah, the heretics were supposed to be the biggest baddest things around and they all were picked off one by one - pretty easily too. Lily was in and out and they could have done so much more with her character. I almost forgot they brought their mother back, lol. I think the two cars at the end of this episode was because Mary Louise and Nora stole the sword from Rayna and took off in one car, then Rayna got in her car to follow them to get the sword back (and Nora was hit by the sword). They started the spell to blow up the car because they decided to die together while destroying the sword in the process.
The thing I don't get about the whole Rayna thing is why she was all of a sudden so compassionate toward Stefan and why it mattered that she wanted Damon to get the mark instead. The whole point of her "mystical curse" was to wipe out all vampires. There was no caveat about good or bad vampires. There's always an exception with Stefan isn't there?
I had to watch the episode again because it was all over the place. I was like, wait, who is that, what's going on, lol. Wasn't a big fan of this episode because it felt like they were just creating lore out of nowhere with no rhyme or reason (except to serve their purpose). I know they created the Phoenix stone, so they can essentially do whatever they want, but, I feel like it would be better served to give me the story of the stone and her powers up front - a good time to do that would have been when Bonnie was reading from the book about it. All of a sudden, Rayna is connected to everyone she hunts? Why did she go so fiercely after Beau then? Didn't he get in the way of her sword by accident and get hit in the throat? He couldn't even speak anymore and although he was working with the other heretics, I don't know that he was the worst of them all.
This episode was OK, I was annoyed with a lot of it. Oh well.

Yeah it'd be one thing if Rayna talked about all of her targets of that caliber, Beau and mention some of her older targets. Like you mentioned they made up the mythology but it still has to make sense. I think they jumped the gun with some of the 'abilities' of the mystical curse. I could believe that she is able to track down her targets anywhere once they're marked. That part would make sense otherwise how would she be able to find anyone. What's jumping the gun is her being able to physically see and watch all of her targets at any time. How does she watch them? In her mind? How does she watch so many targets at the same time? Then they took it a step further and made her be able to know what exactly her targets are thinking so they essentially can't lie to her. The thing about it is that all of this just feels convenient for Stefan. She watches Stefan and then begins to feel some type of way? That Stefan is the only vampire that she trapped that she believes is good and doesn't deserve to be in the stone? Like Stefan jokingly said, 'Do you talk to all your targets like this?' It felt like the writing poking fun at itself because it literally makes no sense for a hunter that's magically engineered to track vampires down and basically condemn them to an eternity of torment on repeat, would stop and chit chat with all of her targets like that and want them to let go of the stress in their life (like her thought on Stefan needing to give up on Damon). At this point it's getting ridiculous with all of these characters that fall for Stefan in the narrative and holding him up on this grand pedestal. The writing comes off so contrived and biased nowadays that I almost dread to come back and watch TVD's weekly Friday episode after watching a week of other shows with better quality in their writing and characterization. Again if Rayna talked about other targets that she was drawn to as she watched them, then I would be much more accepting of this. Since this wouldn't just be an exception for Stefan, but something that's been a part of the character. But having her jump into the show and suddenly have an opinion on the Salvatore brothers and all these lines about who's the good and bad one of the two makes me laugh more than anything. Characters have felt more like mouthpieces than actual characters lately.

But having her jump into the show and suddenly have an opinion on the Salvatore brothers and all these lines about who's the good and bad one of the two makes me laugh more than anything. Characters have felt more like mouthpieces than actual characters lately. This exactly. I was fine with the magical sword and the mark drawing her to her victims - THAT made enough sense that it worked. That extra step was when it got ridiculous and then I really laughed out loud when Stefan threw the sword at the truck and she literally saw the exact scene - really? The connection not only draws her to them, but she is also a seer and a psychic? "I know what you're thinking, mystical connection remember?" What? That's just too far-fetched. It makes me feel like they ran out of time or just tried to squeeze it in there for their forward purpose, but I think good writers would have been able to drop some subtle hints about that from the time Rayna came on the scene. They could have shown her seeing short visions of Julian and Lily or some other random targets and then tied it all together for us. Instead of giving us breadcrumbs along the way, they dropped the whole loaf on us, lol.
