A bit of an example of some of their banter:
Your ancestors were hunters too? he asked, as if she were telepathic. He waited a moment—still silence. Okay—no telepathy. That was good. He nodded at the magnificent stave. “That was certainly made for a lord or lady.â€
Meredith wasn’t stupid. She spoke without glancing away from his eyes. She was ready, at any instant, to go into killing mode. “We’re just ordinary folk, trying to get a job done so innocent humans will be safer.â€
“By killing the odd vampire or two.â€
“Well, so far in recorded history saying ‘Naughty, naughty, Mama spank’ has failed to convert a single vampire to vegetarianism.â€
Damon had to laugh. “Pity you weren’t born early enough to convert Stefan. He could have been your grand triumph.â€
“You think that’s funny. But we do have converts.â€
“Yes. People will say anything while you’re holding a pointed stick at them.â€
“People who feel that it’s wrong to Influence other people into believing they’re getting something for nothing.â€
“That’s it! Meredith! Let me Influence you!†This time it was Meredith who laughed.

So, I wouldn't say he was afraid to make rude remarks to her either. I don't know. I guess I see it different then whoever wrote that.
Obviously a vampire hunter and vampire in the same room, you'd expect them to be wary of each other and that's how I saw it, a wary working relationship, since they did had to work together to some degree but neither trusted the other. It was sort of a fun interesting relationship they had so if it translated to the show that would be cool.

It was sort of a fun interesting relationship they had so if it translated to the show that would be cool. That's just Midnight though. I was referring to the way he acted around her UP UNTIL HE KNEW what she really was. Which, Midnight was the book in which he realized... that bit is actually from it-- its either right before or right after they have a sort of fight scene. Once he understood why it was that he'd always had that fear of her-- it became more of a respect, not so much fear.>>>> Meredith stood up. “Is there anything I can get him to stop his mouth bleeding? Something to drink, maybe?”
Stefan just looked stricken. Stefan’s problem—well, a part of one of Stefan’s many problems—was that he thought feeding was sinful. Even to talk about.
Maybe it was actually kickier that way. People relished anything they thought was sinful. Even vampires did.
Damon was put out. How did you go back in time to when anything was sinful? Because he was sadly out of kicks.
With her back turned, Meredith was less scary. Damon risked an answer to the question of what he could drink.
“You, darling…you darling.”

Yeah he knew something was up with her but he didn't know what it was about her until that point that made him uneasy. Then they did have their standoff in which she conceded to him and let him 'win'. I can't say that it was because she couldn't win if it was a for real fight. He was human at the time so imagine how much tougher he would have been as a vampire. But I think it was because she really didn't want to fight him. His thoughts as soon as he discovered she was a hunter: Hadn’t he suspected something like this for a long time? Subconsciously? After all, there had been that attack on the grandfather, which had failed to either kill him or to erase his memory completely. Damon’s imagination could fill in the rest: her parents seeing no reason to blight their tiny daughter’s life with this gruesome business—a whole new change of scenery—and then giving up the practice in the provincial, protected little town of Fell’s Church. If they had only known. Oh, doubtless they had made sure that Meredith had had self-defense and various martial arts training since she was a child, while swearing her to absolute secrecy—even from her best friends. Smith, L. J. (2011-03-15). The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight (pp. 78-79). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition. Also his general feeling about hunters: Damon had met several hunter-slayers—briefly—in his time. They were, in his consideration, bigoted, unreasonable, and even more stupid than the average human, because they’d usually been brought up on legends of vampires with fangs like tusks who ripped out the throats of their victims and killed them. Damon would be the first to admit that there were some vampires like that, but most were more restrained. Smith, L. J. (2011-03-15). The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight (p. 75). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition. While she may have used the words 'less scary' the rest of the text just doesn't seem to back up the notion that he was actually afraid of her, to me anyway. Now we're getting off track on this and derailing the thread so I suppose we should quit or move it to debates and see what others think on the subject.

If you'd like to move it, you should, but I just want to let you know that isn't the only case where it made it seem as if Damon feared Meredith. There were other cases I remember, and am too lazy to go looking through all the books to find, where even Elena had seemed to notice that Damon seemed fearful and cautious of her... one of which I know was somewhere in Shadow Souls. My point was to say that Damon's thought process in that instance obviously showed that with Meredith's eyes on him he'd be a lot less likely to mess with her- and a lot less likely with her in general, than with anyone else.

We kissed now it's Weird! LOVE IT!!! Elena is being a jerk face! I agree...well she was probably trying to hide it from Bonnie cause Bonnie has never been a big fan of Damon and she knew Damon would make it obvious, so that would make sense, but now it's out there.

Yeah she obviously figures out he's a vampire but that could be the end of her before she even really gets started.
