Without knowing him, it would be easy to write off Ian Somerhalder as your average gorgeous actor with eyes so blue the ocean would get jealous. But after just one chat with the Vampire Diaries star, you’ll realize he’s so much more than that.
Sitting down for an interview with ContentMode magazine, the actor, model, philanthropist, and Southern gentleman dishes on his work, style, charity, and the people that matter.
Having started in the modeling industry at the age of 10, Ian’s been working for a third of his life. When asked if he ever contemplates slowing down, taking a break, or doing something else, Ian makes it very clear that he’ll always be productive. “Every minute we are alive is a pretty darn fortunate one,” he explains. “I really believe if you spend those opportune moments knowing you’re leaving the world a better place, that is time well spent and ultimately more fulfilling.”
In the first season of The Vampire Diaries, it could have been easy to peg Damon as a one-dimensional character with no depth or soul. But as Ian says, “Understanding Damon has been quite the journey. [My acting coach and I] take every script and really break it down to find the needs of Damon and the truths he possesses within his own reality.”
Though Ian finds himself constantly traveling for work, he always embraces the opportunity to venture outside his comfort zone. “There are many really beautiful places on this earth that I would love to travel to, especially places in need of ecological and environmental awareness: Maldives, Haiti, Vietnam, and the Arctic to name a few.”
When it comes to those he surrounds himself with, Ian says he’s drawn to people who are necessary to his personal growth. “My family. My friends. The crew. The people that make up the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. In my life, I’m surrounded by all kinds of different people on a daily basis who simultaneously encourage me to think, make me laugh, and definitely inspire honesty.”

Ian has been working for so long I doubt that he knows how to slow down......but acting wise he has grown a lot and the more complex the charector the better Ian is. As a philanthropist and environmentalist his hard work goes without saying. |
