Exclusive: Kat Graham reveals Interesting Clues About Bonnie's New Love Interest!
Posted by Theo on October 22, 2015 at 12:13 PM
Between losing almost everyone she’s ever loved (even dying herself a few times) and being abandoned in a 1994 prison world for months on end, it’s safe to say that Bonnie Bennett has experienced many unfathomable hardships. Homegirl could easily write a Tolstoy-length novel on all the pain and heartache she’s suffered, as well as the bloody battles she’s managed to survive. However, no matter what sorts of obstacles the cruel Fates throw her way, she rises up stronger and more badass than ever before — that’s how resilient our Bon Bon is.
That being said, wondering what’s in store for her in The Vampire Diaries Season 7. Well, you’re in luck: Thanks to Kat Graham, we’ve got plenty of scoop to dish about her character’s upcoming storyline. Dive into our interview right below for the exclusive details!
Alloy Entertainment: We love how tough and confident Bonnie is this season. She always is, but this time around she’s seem more sure of herself. With that in mind, what’s in store for her in the upcoming episodes — especially in terms of showdowns and that creepy Phoenix stone?
Kat Graham: You’re definitely going to see a lot of fights happening. One actually occurs in episode three. You will get to see a showdown between Oscar — this new character we’re introducing — and Damon, Alaric and Bonnie. They head to Myrtle Beach to get their hands on some information and things get a little violent. It’s really interesting to play the character this year because I’ve always felt that Bonnie, having been on her own so often, has remained grounded and created this wall around her. And now that this is no longer the case, you’re going to see a very intense character.
Alloy Entertainment: Bonnie is at the height of her power right now, and she always uses her magic for good. However, if she could grant her one purely selfish day what would you have her do?
Kat Graham: Eat a lot of ice cream. [Laughs] No, but really, I’d like to see her spend a day with her mom and do things a normal girl would, like go shopping or on a speed date — something of that nature.
Alloy Entertainment: As much as we miss Elena, we appreciate that her presence is still felt on the show. On that note, as someone who who was there from the very beginning, what do you miss most about working with Nina Dobrev?
Kat Graham: I miss how much food we used to eat together! We used to go and raid the chocolate bowl, and we used to always share meals on set. Nina will actually share with anyone, especially if you have a snack that she wants. [Laughs] But I think my favorite memories of her involve making trips to crafts services together throughout the day. I miss eating with her the most.
Alloy Entertainment: That being said, will Bonnie get any sexy time this season and exactly how hot will things get? Sure, she copped a feel of Jeremy’s hunter arms last year, but after everything she’s been through, girlfriend needs a bit of indulgence!
Kat Graham: A lot of people feel that exact same way. [Laughs] We‘ll see!
Alloy Entertainment: Quick question — do you ever sleep?
Kat Graham: I sleep on planes. [Laughs] I actually pushed a meeting to next week because I didn’t want to sleep on another red eye. But, you know, this is a big year not only for Vampire Diaries, but there are a lot of exciting stories to tell and songs to release. I just kinda have to focus this year and not slow down.
Alloy Entertainment: Your new album, Roxbury Drive, is amazing. “Low” is our new car jam — it’s such a fun, smooth track!
Kat Graham: Thank you so much! We’re actually very excited about “Secrets” and what it’s going to do. We’re also doing a re-release of the album — basically a Roxbury Drive reloaded — and that will be coming out in the first quarter. We’re going to keep at it.
Alloy Entertainment: You bare a lot of raw emotions on Roxbury Drive and definitely show fans a different side to yourself. Was there any song in particular that you were hesitant about including due to this?
Kat Graham: It’s not easy to put yourself completely out there, and I don’t talk a lot about my personal life. I do that on purpose because I prefer to open up through my music. With this album — the story, everything that happened — it’s all about the same person. So, I just wanted to make a record that was honest about who I am and what I’m going through, and let people in.
Alloy Entertainment: Michael Malarkey just dropped an EP. Have you ever discussed the possibility of recording a duet together?
Kat Graham: Michael and I have definitely discussed the possibility of doing one, and I totally would be open to that. He’s so supremely talented, I think anyone would want to collaborate with him. For sure!
So, fang fans: What’s at the top of your wish list for Bonnie Bennett this year? Who do you think is her highly anticipated love interest? Sound off in the comments!

And now that this is no longer the case, you’re going to see a very intense character.
Alloy Entertainment: Speaking of intensity, those flash forwards are quite unsettling. It’s all Heretics drama and suddenly it’s BAM — twist! Which character’s future, in your opinion, will surprise fans the most?
Kat Graham: I think mine will, to be honest. There’s still so much more to learn, so I can’t say for sure for later episodes — but when episode five comes along viewers are going to be pretty excited to see what happens.

Alloy Entertainment: In previous seasons, we’ve seen hints of darkness in Bonnie — especially in the latter half of Season 7 after she returned from the 1994 prison world and was experiencing PTSD. Will that come back into play this year?
Kat Graham: You know, it’s very possible — but I can’t say more than that. [Laughs] That said, even if the character becomes a villain, we’re talking about a justified person. Even when she’s made some unpopular decisions or done things that have shocked people, she’s been celebrated along the way because Bonnie always fights for what she believes in. So I can’t say whether or not she’ll go dark, but I can say that this is a character who makes decisions based on the overall plan and the well-being of her town and friends versus just being evil because she’s having a rough day.

Alloy Entertainment: In the Season 6 finale, Elena basically asked Bonnie and Caroline to live it up. How will Bonnie honor that? So far she’s traveled to Amsterdam — are there are any adventures coming up for her?
Kat Graham: There are definitely some exciting adventures to come for her. And she’s not the only one; I think all the characters are trying to enjoy themselves within the realm of protecting Mystic Falls from all these forces who are constantly wreaking anarchy on their lives. But they definitely try to live it up, and we do have some great party scenes that we’re been busy filming this scene. The one in the Halloween episode is actually a “Heaven or Hell” theme, and it’s really fun. We have some awesome stuff coming up

Alloy Entertainment: The TVD fandom has been aflutter lately with mentions of Bamon, Bonenzo, and even Alonnie. What clues can you give about Bonnie’s new love interest?
Kat Graham: [Laughs] I can’t give you any clues….You know that! But what I can say that people do know the character, and it is one of the regulars — which is a big deal because the show usually stays with that for a long time, just like it did with [Steven] McQueen. It’s fun! It’s actually a super fun dynamic.

Alloy Entertainment: Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder have confirmed that they are both directing TVD episodes this year. Considering your hands-on, behind-the-scenes involvement with Muse, do you have any plans to do so as well?
Kat Graham: I’m actually fully in producer mode right now, to be honest. I’m finalizing production on my first documentary, and I’m packaging a couple of shows. I’m also have the Tammi Terrell biopic that’s coming out. But if I had the opportunity to pick a director, it would always choose Darren Genet. He’s directed many episodes of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, as well my Foster Grant commercial, Muse, and the “Secrets” video that is out now. He graduated from AFI and is incredibly cinematic, so I’m not interested in directing when we have artists like him in the world.

Alloy Entertainment: What exactly fueled your passion for this particular album? It has such a different vibe to it than your earlier music.
Kat Graham: It’s a whole new level. I’ve always been obsessed with classic R&B — Babyface, Blackstreet, Boys II Men, and Aaliyah — as well as the ’90s version of artists — the ’90s Janet, the ’90s Madonna, Paula Abdul. I love the sounds and melodies from that time, so I wanted to do an album that felt reminiscent of that. Also, with the re-release we’re going to add in some current, pop-inspired tracks because this is a very selfish album — I wanted to put something out there that I wanted to hear nowadays. Even just having a song like “Secrets,” which I worked on with Babyface, is a dream come true. I mean, I don’t think you need any more inspiration than Babyface.

Alloy Entertainment: Are there any contemporary artists with whom you’d love to record a duet?
Kat Graham: I’m currently working Babyface, and would love to work with Bruno Mars. I’ve been mentored by Prince for over a year now, and he’s helping me find my wings as a music producer and figuring out the kind of record I want to make. These guys would be great in terms of this chapter of my music, but there are so many great artists out there.
