Wow at that plot description: The plot traces the relationship between recent college graduate Anastasia Steele and manipulative billionaire Christian Grey. Steele is required by Grey to sign a contract allowing him complete control over her life as well as a non-disclosure agreement, something that he's required from all of his previous submissives. Upon learning that she is a virgin, Grey agrees to have sex with her in order to prepare her for later encounters, fully intending that the contract would be signed. As she gets to know him, she learns that his sexual tastes involve bondage, domination and sadism, and that childhood abuse left him a deeply damaged individual. In order to be his partner she agrees to experiment with BDSM, but struggles to reconcile who she is (a virgin who has never previously had a boyfriend) with who Christian wants her to be: his submissive, to-do-with-as-he-pleases partner in his "Red Room of Pain." ----- I've been fumbling around for some things outside of urban fantasy but at the same time, I feel like I should finish some series up before I start branching out more. Might track down a chapter or two to read to see if it's something I'll jump over to. Was looking more at fantasy/sci-fi/mystery stuff but 'erotic fiction' as Wiki calls it, eh, will give it a shot if I have the chance. Also, you might like this from Wiki, if that's not what you were referencing already: "It has been reported that Ian Somerhalder, Alexander Skarsgard, and Ashley Benson have expressed interest in acting in the film." ----- Likewise, "Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder also voiced a strong interest in playing the male lead. Last month, he told Ryan Seacrest he would "absolutely" be up for taking on the role of Christian Grey. "It could be very, very amazing. I have the book and I just started reading it. That would be a pretty incredible thing, and hopefully that could pan out," he said. "Beyond the shadow of a doubt, I think that would be a phenomenal opportunity!" The sexiest vampire on "True Blood," Alexander Skarsgard, had never heard of the explosive, erotic series just a few weeks ago. But when he was asked if he would be interested in playing the copper-haired billionaire whose estate includes a "red room of pain," Skarsgard's interest was definitely piqued. "Where do I sign? He's got a sex chamber? My character [Eric Northman] has that on ‘True Blood.' He's got his little dungeon. I was born to play that part," ----- So you get either Damon or Eric in the role. Wondering when they'd have to shoot it for Ian though so it doesn't conflict with his TVD scheduling =\ 22 episodes, 4-5 month break to shoot the movie and then head back to shoot another season of TVD. Would be exhausting. EDIT: Just read Ch 1 over at Barnes & Noble's page. I like what I've read so far, or at the very least, the character interaction between Ana and Mr. Grey. I really find it easy to picture Ian or Alexander in the role of Mr. Grey, given the characters they play. Seems right up their alley. Might be doing a book run in the next week or so and might add this to the list. Thanks for bringing it to my attention

Yes I pictured Damon because I had saw when he said he would be up for that challenge of the character. Its a really good book besides all the naughty stuff that happens. It makes you wonder what people will go thru to be with the person they are in love with.
I read the whole series(3 books) within 7 days because of a Trip to Puerto Rico, I needed something to read on the plane and when it was down time and i enjoyed it. Then at the end of the author teased everyone with the very first chapter of the first book in CHristian's perspective and I'm like WHY WOULD SHE DO THAT it was so good. I decided to read it all over again lol...I have plenty of downtime now so i figured why not
I figured let me go through the book slowly this time around but apparently i don't do slow reading lol I'm already into the second book. I also skip through a lot of the sex parts because they can get a little repetitive.
I just needed something to obsess with while vampire diaries is off and i guess this is the series. I wonder how they will make this into a movie. theres a lot a lot of sex haha
Anyway I hope you get into reading it, the author had originally made a version of this as a fan fiction from twilight but then decided to make it with her own characters which in my opinion was a good choice.
Now that i think about it its one of the first books I've read in a while thats outside of the supernatural genre and i enjoyed it very much. Do you have a Nook E reader.
I received one as a gift last year and its been the best. Theres a website where you can get free books and also I can lend out books for free to other nook users. so just putting that out there =)
Let me know when you read it

Not a slow reader either. If I'm enjoying something, the next thing I know, I'm at the back of the book about to finish up, not wanting it to be over just yet I'm just wondering how this spun off from a Twilight fan fiction. It sounds like a decent read but is it just the characters that were changed or the entire premise? Or was it originally a Twilight sex fanfic? Nope, don't have an e-reader. Prefer to physically own the books. My mom and aunt have them and have tried to sell me on getting an e-reader or if I had an interest in one and I just kind of passed on the idea. I know 'digital' is the future and all but I'd rather just have my reading material in physical form.

yea apparently the author liked twilight but thought there wasn't enough sex in it or something. she had it up for a while with a different name and then she took it down and decided to tweak it...you see the small similarities...Christian Grey this very private hot guy who keeps to himself and has this big secret also adopted and his foster mother is a doctor and then Anastasia is this clumpsy girl who has 2 left feet her mom lives with her new husband somewhere hot and she used to live with her step dad who she considers her real father when she was younger...etc etc lol
this is from an article:
James' agent told Deadline, "This did start as 'Twilight' fan fiction, inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s wonderful series of books. Originally it was written as fan fiction, then Erika [E.L. James] decided to take it down after there were some comments about the racy nature of the material. She took it down and thought, I’d always wanted to write. I’ve got a couple unpublished novels here. I will rewrite this thing, and create these iconic characters, Christian and Anna. If you read the books, they are nothing like 'Twilight' now." Her American publisher told the Associated Press that James' "Masters of the Universe" (which was fan fiction) and "50 Shades of Grey" are "two distinctly separate pieces of work."

Seeing as I like to distance myself from Twilight, I would have never noticed the similarities. But just from the movies, it's a bunch of unlikeable characters for me. Just from reading the first Ch of 50 Shades, I already like the 2 leads from a first impression. I'm still sort of confused: it started as a fanfic but was rewritten. So it is an entirely different premise from TW now to the point that instead of saying it started off as a fanfic, that fanfic was the inspiration/kickstarter to do something entirely new/different? Or did the original fanfic have Edward being into BDSM and Domination?

I posted this in the Ian Somerhalder thread yesterday, I've just discovered this thread so I'll post it here too OMG. I just devoured all three "Fifty Shades of Grey" books in 3 days. And all I can say is that character is PERFECT for Ian. Its like it was written for him. The confident facade with the tortured past and vulnerability underneath that he's so brilliant at portraying...

Actually, I was very pleasantly surprised by them - there wasn't any of the horrid hardcore BDSM that I was expecting (mainly coz Ana doesn't want to lol) and they are seriously some of the most romantic books I have ever read!

I was thinking about reading this book since it is getting rave reviews. That is until I read this review on Amazon:
Did a teenager write this???, April 15, 2012 By meymoonAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One of the Fifty Shades Trilogy (Paperback) "I really don't like writing bad reviews. I admire people who have the courage to put pen to paper and expose themselves to the whole world, especially those writing erotica. Having just finished this book, however, I feel compelled to write a review.
About half way through the book, I looked up the author to see if she was a teenager. I really did because the characters are out of a 16 year old's fantasy. The main male character is a billionaire (not a millionaire but a billionaire) who speaks fluent French, is basically a concert level pianist, is a fully trained pilot, is athletic, drop dead gorgeous, tall, built perfectly with an enormous penis, and the best lover on the planet. In addition, he's not only self made but is using his money to combat world hunger. Oh yeah, and all of this at the ripe old age of 26! And on top of that, he's never working. Every second is spent having sex or texting and emailing the female character. His billions seem to have just come about by magic. It seriously feels like 2 teenage girls got together and decided to create their "dream man" and came up with Christian Grey.
Then come the sex scenes. The first one is tolerable but as she goes on, they become so unbelievable that it becomes more laughable than erotic. She orgasms at the drop of a hat. He says her name and she orgasms. He simply touches her and she orgasms. It seems that she's climaxing on every page.
Then there's the writing. If you take out the parts where the female character is blushing or chewing her lips, the book will be down to about 50 pages. Almost on every single page, there is a whole section devoted to her blushing, chewing her lips or wondering "Jeez" about something or another. Then there's the use of "shades of". He's "fifty shades of @#$%% up," "she turned 7 shades of crimson," "he's ten shades of x,y, and z." Seriously?
The writing is just not up to par, the characters are unbelievable, and the sex verges on the comical. I don't know what happens in the remaining books and I do not intend to read them to find out. But given the maturity level of the first book, I imagine that they get married, have 2 perfect children, cure world hunger, and live happily ever after while riding into the sunset, as the female character climaxes on her horse causing her to chew her bottom lip and blush fifty shades of crimson. Jeez! "
Apparently some other reviewers agree with this person. I get the feeling its a grocery store novel. You know, the ones with the pictures of a Fabio type dude, horse and woman on the cover. I am going to wait until my brother- in- laws girlfriend reads it so I can ask her if its good. We seem to like the same books.

I'm reading the book and feeling conflicted. It skirts the possibility of domestic violence/abuse in relationships and it makes me uncomfortable to ever think our society would be OK with that or turn an even blinder eye on it because of this book and trust me, abuse in relationships isn't recognized enough as it is. I'm not done reading yet so I'll reserve my full judgment until I am, then write out a thoughtful review. I do, however, find it a bit disturbing to see young women saying they want to 'try' something like this out as a result of the book. The type of guys you might find would be into this sort of thing may not be the kind to stop when it gets to not be 'fun' anymore. Sex games within a relationship are one thing, but what this book is talking about is an entire relationship based on one person dominating another, which is exactly what you get in an abusive relationship. Just saying...ask anyone who's been in one if it was 'fun.' I leave you with the following facts: 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. 85% of domestic violence victims are women. These are only the reported cases. Domestic violence is one of the most chronically underreported crimes. Because of the nature of domestic violence, most incidences are not reported at all. This is a very real problem and romanticizing anything even remotely like it to me is a dangerous precedent to set. Facts from: www.ncadv.org/files/DomesticViolenceFactSheet(National).pdfCheck out the circle of Power and Control on that sight. That's a well known and used marker for recognizing an abusive relationship and tell me where what Christian Grey wanted was any different. What did he say he wanted in a relationship? Complete power and control over another human being (Ana). So it definitely fits the definition for sure and carries some of the markers listed. Now I realize this is fiction and as such you are unlikely to get a Christian Grey in real life. What you'll get is a control freak who will make your life a living hell and THAT is where I find it dangerous. The social impact and reality vs fantasy in regard to this book being so popular can't be disregarded. It needs to be talked about. OK, so I didn't really reserve judgment very well did I? Well this is based on having just finished Chapter 16 where he spanks Ana for rolling her eyes at him. Perhaps things get better, but they could get worse, so I guess I'll see.
