Yeah but those particular men were already at the top of the game before they hit their 40's and 50's so people wanted to keep seeing them even though they were beyond the age of 'male lead.' I'm not saying it's right. I think people of all ages can and should be given those sort of roles but that's traditionally how they do it. Yes, men get longer, but 40 is usually the cut off and he's just a little over 5 years away from that.
Although, Clint Eastwood had been acting for a long time, because he was tall and skinny and had such a soft voice Hollywood didn't know what to do with him, he never got the leading roles. Clint didn't become a big screen star until his mid to late 30s and it was the introduction of the Spaghetti Western (A Fist Full Of Dollars) that did it for him, and even then it was by sheer luck, because the actor Ennio Mariconne wanted Charles Bronson only he was busy, so Clint got the role and the rest is history, however, the irony here is when Clint was required for the role of the harmonica playing hero in Once Upon A Time In The West, he was busy with his Dirty Harry Movies and this time it was Charles Bronson who was available. Prior to that at the age of 29 to 35 Clint was becoming well known for his role as Rowdy Yates in the tv series Rawhide, just as Ian is doing with LOST and TVD
Paul Newman is another Hollywood great who didn't become a big screen star until his 30's and I could give you a list of Hollywood royality who were not young men when they became screen idols. Therefore, traditionally some of the best known actors grafted their way through tonnes of movies before they found the one that made them into big stars.
And most of the younger stars who have made it big, started life either in soaps, sitcoms or tv dramas, but even so they have been in the business for sometime before they made it big.... For Ian as it was with Clint and Paul it is not the age but the series or the movie that will take him that one step further to world stardom.
I really do hope this is the case for Ian, but that is why I said I doubt he'd want to keep doing Damon because he wants to keep moving forward and upward. Any day he could get a big break, a movie role in which he would shine and I do believe a similar edgy character like Damon would really highlight his talents well. I look back at Boone and while that was a wonderful character and I loved him, Ian just didn't really shine in the role like he does with a character like Damon. So now I believe we've found his 'type' like Eastwood found his and it will just take the right role to bring him wider worldwide fame. I could see him in roles like Christian Grey (though I guess that's out now) James Bond (which I'd die for) and similar. I think those type of roles he'd be perfection in but if he ties himself down with any more TV contracts those opportunities will slip away from him.

I think it really is down to pure luck (being in the right place at the right time) when you think about it had Ian not been killed off in the first season of LOST he wouldn't have been available for Vampire Dairies, remember he managed to appear in the finale of LOST, even though he was now Damon in TVD. However, had he still been in LOST when its finale arrived TVD would already have its actors and the first season was already on the way and we wouldn't have had Ian. So it was just our luck. Sometimes things happen for a reason.
Regarding Clint Eastwood he was doing the tv series Rawhide when he did the movie that shot him to worldwide stardom, therefore, maybe Ian's movie made during the hiatus by director Noel Clarke is just another step in the right direction.

Just go to show how much impact Ian (Damon) has on the show, here is a tweet from a new viewer, they've just started watching TVD for the first time.

Things I miss about Damon....angry, sexy Damon...the way he oozed sex, just the way he moved in the earlier seasons and used his sex appeal to get what he wanted. He even did it to guys and it worked! A perfect example of him using his sex appeal is below. Yeah he totally manipulated her with it but it was so hot! We just never see that side of him anymore and I miss it

ardent: I have this to say about vamps: Too simple and boring for common humans. The only most important thing to learn about vamps is that humans are more than genetic, and that all anatomies are composed of psycho-electromagnetism everlasting. Interact with me

ardent: Vamp imitators are like mighty kids - this is fable entertainment, in reality vamps can be extremely dangerous, what impresses me? Impersonal or undivided romancing in their maturity, why impersonal? It may take a lot time, it's beyond materialism.

ardent: Real vamp expertise could put you in a lot of trouble unknowingly, you need to know science at large to save yourself, I'd beware it requires being highly intuitive on your part to avoid trouble, it's not about negating anything it's mastery rightfully.

ardent: If ask a real vamp, 'will you live on earth for a million years?', he'll be puzzled and say 'I may quit' this is where I come in and say, 'what you'll be beyond is your own psycho-electromagnetism in your solid union everlasting beyond the veil'.

ardent: There may be no real vamps on earth right now, if so they live very secretively, many just quit when they find an ideal mate with undivided love, why undivided love - this is where the hardest part of vamps understandings are - Metaphysics will give leads.
