They did mention that all they had to do was dagger him and it would break the compulsion so problem solved, Kol is out of the way for The Originals and they can go on with the storyline leaving Kol's character available for future story lines so let's hope that's how it goes.

I wonder who Bonnie's 'unexpected' visitor is, although someone's going to have to let Shane out of lockup so he can run off to Canada in 4x13 (btw, kudos to the most incompetent police force/judicial system EVER in Mystic Falls.
