Although Grams (Jasmine Guy) provided a safe haven for Bonnie where she can find peace, it looks like some evil outside force is trying to get into this place that Damon and Bonnie now find themselves in. From the tiny bit of spoilers we have been given, therefore, not too much to go on, it looks like the peaceful place might not stay peaceful for long.

Just a quick re-cap of a spoiler The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Spoiler Roundup — Where Are Damon and Bonnie?
The Vampire Diaries’ Powers That Be have stayed impressively tight-lipped about the status of Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) in Season 6. We know the characters will be back in the upcoming season following getting apparently blinked out of existence in the Season 5 finale, but we’re less sure about the details of their return. Here is everything we know about Bamon’s whereabouts come Season 6. It is not fun. Wherever Bamon ended up, it is not all cotton candy and gum drops. Executive producer Julie Plec let spill to TVLine: “Ooh, well… I can tell you this: Where they are is part of the mystery of the beginning of the season. It’s not torturous, but it’s by no means a roller coaster ride of fun. If nothing else, it’s a bit of an existential experience.” Sounds like purgatory. IS TVD pulling a Lost on us? Because that didn’t end so well for Ian Somerhalder the last time. They’re just as confused as we are. Julie also revealed: “They’ll be aware that they’re no longer where they thought they were — but they’re also not dead, per se. They’ll be asking a lot of questions, along with the audience, including: What’s going on? Where the hell are we? And how do we get home?” It’s not the Other Side. For anyone holding out hope on the Other Side, Julie revealed to Entertainment Weekly: “I can say for certain the Other Side is gone for good, and I can say for certain that when the Other Side disappeared for good that [Bamon] had already been dealt with — whether it’s through finding peace or other means. Outside of that [laughs], I think I’ll let the speculation blow around for a little while longer.” They will be fighting to return. Wherever Bamon is, you better believe they’re brainstorming ways to get back to the people they love. A promo poster for Season 6 reads: “Season six will be the story of their battle between good and evil within themselves, and their journey back to each other to reclaim their home.” The substantial time jump. We’ve heard a lot about the several-months time jump that will occur between Seasons 5 and 6, but we’re not sure how it will have affected Bamon. Will they have been hanging out wherever they are for all of that time? Or will they have just regained consciousness after a period of non-existence, travel, etc.? www.wetpaint.com/vampire-diaries/articles/2014-08-11-season-6-spoiler-roundup-damon-bonnie?utm_campaign=repromote&utm_medium=tw-tvdwetpaint&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_term=1407863482548187

It very much looks like the Alternative Universe (AU) that Damon and Bonnie end up in....Is an an Alternative Mystic Falls, so the place will be both familiar yet unfamiliar..

It looks like the peace that Grams ensured Bonnie would have in this place is not going to last as some outside force is trying to find a way in.

Damon and Bonnie Are Somewhere "Familiar" Yet "Foreign" We’ve spent the summer speculating on what might have happened to Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) on The Vampire Diaries. The two were seemingly blinked out of existence in the Season 5 finale, but will be back in Season 6. How will that work? According to TV Guide, the mystery of where Bonnie and Damon ended up will be answered by the end of the second episode, which sounds great to us! TVD has never been a show that dangles unanswered questions in front of us for long. It answers questions quickly while throwing us the next plot twist. We see no reason to stop that tradition. There are enough shows on TV that skew the other way. So, what do we know about Bonnie and Damon’s home-away-from-home? “Although the setting may look familiar, the duo is definitely in a place that's foreign to them. Perhaps it's not the where that matters at all!” TV Guide teased. Hmmm…might TVD be pulling an Outlander on us? Time travel is all the rage right now, and the vampire drama wouldn’t be the first to use it as a plot device well into its series run. Lost pulled a similar trick. The more we think about it, the more into this time travel theory we are. TVD has always been a show that rocks the flashback, but the device has become less relevant in recent seasons. Bonnie and Damon’s trip to an earlier (or later) era could bring the flashback (or flashforward) back in interesting ways. We’re casting our vote for time travel. www.wetpaint.com/vampire-diaries/articles/2014-08-13-season-6-spoiler-damon-bonnie?postId=509805&utm_campaign=repromote&utm_medium=tw-tvdwetpaint&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_term=1408121714012719

I moved the above to this regular spoilers thread so we could discuss this speculation. I find this very interesting that Damon and Bonnie might be time traveling. What if it's an 'after death' life review sort of thing? Damon has been alive a very long time so he went through all these eras. Bonnie could be along for the ride because they linked hands and when they get to their time together it could be interesting since they each tried to kill the other at one point.

Going back to JP's quote about the where not mattering and all the time traveling theories, I guess it's more about the 'when' then.
Although if the car is from the 30's to correspond to the flashbacks, I'm not sure how that would be 'foreign' especially to Damon unless they meant like super far back, 1830's or something. But that's probably stretching it.
Though I'm not sure what would be the point of them time traveling at all or how Grams would even make that possible. I also hate 'time travel' stuff. Since obviously the fun of it is the timeline getting altered and everything just becomes this huge annoying mess.
Also Ian mentioned the 'blue hue' so it makes me think we'll be seeing familiar backgrounds and it'll be like the Other Side all over again. JP hasn't mentioned much about there being other people yet. Hopefully it's not just Bonnie and Damon in some empty blue tinted world as that would get boring quick.
One of the concepts I like, but I doubt JP would do, is Damon and Bonnie being in an AU (alternate universe) Mystic Falls. Where people they know will be there but they'll be completely different from their usual personalities. Maybe they can even do a throw back to the books since nearly everyone's personality was transitioned differently to the show lol.
I'd like that idea moreso in the sense that it'd give us something different to 'watch' while Damon and Bonnie are trapped in the limbo. Though this is probably far from what JP might plan to do.

Speculating on the familiar, yet foreign aspect of the time travel, then it looks like that although Damon and Bonnie are in a familiar place it is foreign because they are travelling through it in different time zones. Which means the scenary around them is changing to fit whatever time zone that they have entered into. Therefore, it looks like the place grams bargained for Bonnie to be in, is not a static place, but one with many time zones. That would make for a very interesting scenario. Because, Damon has lived since his death in 1864 through all the diffent centuries to the present, but I bet he never experienced it in one place before. Bonnie on the other hand gets an insight as to what it must have been like for Damon living as a vampire and watching the centuries tick by.

So maybe It's a Wonderful Life sort of thing...if they had never been born. Who knows? I imagine they want to do something that has to do with what some people think happens when you die since we were told with the other side gone, death would be permanent now, and certainly some people believe there is a life review after death. Perhaps it gets cut short by their rescue, therefore they never really go anywhere permanent.

Yeah I thought JP said they wouldn't be gone more than a few episodes before they manage to get back home. I'm sure that's part of why they did the time jump so that we didn't have to watch a lot of episodes with them elsewhere.
