Well guess it's time to boot this thread up for the proper place to rant/place rants about the writing of this show.
lovesyoufromtheground via tumblr:
I’ve said this before but I can’t be happy as they erase Elena, degrade DE and throw them scraps of below sub standard writing(I know it sounds redundant but it’s not) and what could be reasonable is executed so badly because they don’t know depth. The dialogues are bad because the entire show’s writing is bad; there’s only recycled storylines, jumping shark and pathetic writing(everything about this show is bad right now).
How can I celebrate something because of the above and knowing this is because Elena is being erased and this their half assed “goodbye” when she didn’t get an arc all season and now ooc writing because this show has forgotten build up and ANYWAY this is to downplay DE yet fanservice to make people stay for s7 with their writing which is way beyond redemption.
This show is gone. All I see is JP and co using the characters as mouthpieces for their bad plot convenience.
This is not me hating on DE. This is me refusing to buy JP’s selling DE out. I’m not telling DE goodbye because this isn’t DE and I won’t get closure from this bs tween writing. I settled for them to get back up but even s5’s mess looks less immature than what is there right now.
Team DE in character in this whole human vs vampire stance.
And good luck to them running their show on SC which is not SC, BD that is trying SO hard to be s2 DE and failing(Damon only ever uses her and even the scenes she calls him out it’s so forced. The whole thing is trying too hard and bonnie isn’t dumb enough to keep trusting him. They aren’t DE who had an instant understanding and Damon never used Elena like this) Enzo/lily/Sarah/matt lmao and their mythology that keeps making less sense okaaay sure this show will be the bomb in s7. I can see it.
Canon ended in s4 and i can’t even struggle to see otherwise even if it is painful to see them butchering everything that was loved.

noelenanotvd.tumblr.com/post/117193595359/tvd-chicago-erasing-foundation
TVD Chicago: Erasing Foundation
The Chicago Con was the first con held after the announcement of Elena’s exit. It was a chance for the fans to see the actors’ reactions to questions and gauge the overall attitude they have towards the show and the fandom as a whole, especially after Nina’s impending departure. However, it was clear from the live-tweeting and recounts from fans who attended, that the cast was hellbent on erasing Elena’s existence and trying their hardest to promote a season where she was no longer going to be the protagonist. Yes, that might be their jobs and they were probably influenced by the CW network, but disrespect isn’t mutually exclusive with any type of promotion. It shouldn’t be excusable. Below are live tweets and the implications of what the cast/writers/network are marketing on a large scale. One of our staff members yolsfandomretreat was at the event and can vouch for it all.
What else are people supposed to ask? Ships are the main focus of this show, whether the writers want to admit it or not. It’s was what they constantly used in terms of fanservice and fanbaiting. It’s the reason for their success and trying to deny it simply creates distrust between viewer and creator.
Fans go to the cons for an experience that they pay for and having their questions answered shouldn’t be filtered in this manner. Asking personal questions or anything about the cast’s romantic relationships in real life is off limits, that is completely understandable. But why are ships (products of their writing and acting), Nina’s departure, and spoilers considered taboo topics?
This con in particular filtered it specifically so that ship questions, Nina questions, and spoiler questions wouldn’t be answered or acknowledged.
This is what Julie Plec, the writing team, and The CW are trying to sell. They’re saying that their female lead is easily expendable while the male leads are not. This was insinuated many times before, but this was the first time the cast voiced it out. How is that not misogynistic and completely disrespectful of the position of the female protagonist? The female protagonist is a placeholder. That’s what they’ve ultimately reduced it to.
A few hours after Nina announced that she wasn’t going to be in Season 7, The CW took down the Elena Gilbert header that represented TVD. They replaced her with the Salvatore brothers. Then Julie gave an interview saying that while the show was about the triangle once, it’s “organically” grown into a story about the Salvatore brothers. In fact, even if this failed to interest the casual viewer, she thought that people would tune in to see Damon reading a phonebook. How does that not insult the intelligence of their audience, their demographic which is largely composed of women?
Julie is trying to convince us that the triangle was “once” what the show was about, when they literally only stopped it last season. How does a show with FIVE seasons of a love triangle organically grow into something completely different in less than one season? How is The Vampire Diaries a show about the brothers when it’s always been about the trio, with Elena always at the center? These writers are jumping shark and trying to pimp out the whole “bros before hoes” mentality to seem progressive, when in reality, they’re being incredibly misogynistic.
Now, these tweets can seem small, insignificant, or just viewed as opinions, but these are from hardcore Damon stans. These tweets were from fans at the con defending him and/or fans of Ian. They noted that while Ian’s always been vocal about his dislike of playing anything other than a one-dimensional character, it was different this time. He said this out of relief. He completely disregarded the fact that Elena Gilbert made Damon Salvatore who he was(x,x)
He disregarded his character’s growth and his character’s defining ship, telling the fans that he so desperately loves that they should have better things to do than voice their opinion on this show. If they are anything but positive and non-critical, he doesn’t want to hear it. Yet, he goes on to beg the fans to watch the show. Because the ratings are failing.
The CW and the show runners are now trying to appeal to the casual audience. Not the one that’s been following them for years, giving them their awards and their ratings. The people in charge are using the sidelining of the female protagonist in order to appeal to their Elena-hating audience. The reality is that they’ve been using and undermining her as a protagonist for years with their horribly executed writing and marketing ploys to generate money off of the Delena/Stelena ship war.
They know they have a demographic that consists largely of females and stereotype them as the ones who tune in solely for the male leads, even if the quality of their writing has been deteriorating for two seasons now. Their ratings are falling like flies, according to Ian and Paul.
The Chicago Con is yet another illustration of why the show has become irredeemable. It jumped shark in story premise and promotion, it erased its protagonist from existence, and reduced her to “another woman” when she defined the characters of the show for the majority of its run.
The fans have been talked down from their justified anger and criticism and constantly frowned upon, simply because they’ve pointed out the lack of respect and quality that their show now contains. The fans were never once offered so much as a statement of understanding over their anguish. Not from the writers, the cast, or the network.
This show has turned into a money-making machine for The CW and it’s lost all of its authenticity and quality. The show has run its course. Season 7 needs to be the last season. It upsets us that it’s come down to this, that it’s come down to plead for this show to end this coming season. It’s not likely that it’ll be cancelled, but we can show them that their audience isn’t shallow or complacent as they’re writing us off right now. We aren’t haters, we are fans that were wronged, belittled, and betrayed by a show and a team that we thought would hold more integrity.

Hmmm....that's more of a pro-Elena post than an anti-writer post. While I agree with some of the sentiment there is a definite slant to how they see things and I don't see it quite the same way. It actually would be an interesting topic for a debate more than a rant in this thread because I would find it interesting to see how people view the character of Elena leaving and how the network is handling it. Elena/Nina fans are the most upset (of course) about her leaving the show but they are directing all their anger at everyone else and none at Nina for leaving the CW (and her former coworkers) in the lurch. I find that interesting to say the least. Why don't they blame her for leaving?
While I personally don't think it was her choice to leave, she has said it was, so assuming she is telling the truth, isn't she to blame for the state of DE and the show? Couldn't she have held on for one last season at the least to wrap DE up in a good way? Should all the other people who work on the show have lost their jobs due to her decision? The outcry to end TVD doesn't consider any of those things and is more an emotional response to Nina leaving than anything else. From a practical business perspective the CW should attempt to keep the show going and give DE an acceptable exit to keep the fans at least somewhat happy with the outcome so they keep watching. I'm hoping that's what happens.
Now if you want me to talk about the writing.....yikes! It's very bad right now and I could go on about how it seems they pull their plots out of their butts these days and make it up as they go along but that post wasn't much about the writing...lol

I liked the points given in this article. While I don't blame the writers for nina leaving I do blame them for ending the main character female from the show and continuing the show for another season. The writing is bad. This is why they can't grasp how to do this. If the writers said "hey nina wants to leave but we don't want to let go of Elena" and created a good storyline to somehow incorporate her character then maybe I'd not blame JP and keep watching. But baiting me with "anyone would watch damon read the phone book" is silly and a very immature way to gloss over people's feelings. I am one who feels if they cannot organically continue season 7 with elena and a DE endgame why then have a show continue? This is your bread and butter. To throw us some beautifully tragic bull ish that's anything other than damon and Elena forever pisses me off. It undermines every ounce of passion I ever spent on this show. Don't force feed me this epic love to the very end of season six and give me no resolution to why I watched the crap in the first place. This is how I felt with One Tree Hill and I have learned from that show after Chad left that once the original premise of a show is gone "the triangle" it turns into garbage! Now how can they organically continue Elena into season 7 ? let me give you some examples. These examples are what would keep me watching. 1. Elena body snatches and lives in another's body. It's weird for damon to have a relationship with a new body but it's her soul he fell in love with. On TO this was done and even Kat body jumped into Elena. 2. Elena gets sent to another world for her protection and turns into a child and is kept there to grow older as a human. Once the threat is gone damon comes and gets her. (This theory was so graciously given by Doppel) 3. Elena turns human but is in protection until damon can kill the big bad. Phone calls would suffice with Nina's voice. At the end of season 7 we get a DE ending. Nina would only need to record voice calls. Easy! 4. Elena gets sent into the 1903 prison world to protect the cure. She is stuck there throughout season 7 as damon tries to find a way to rescue her. The assendant is destroyed. Damon finds her and she has the cure from 1903. The last scene is of them taking the cures together. Nina would need to come back to film the last scene otherwise scenes of her in the prison world can be shot with a body double/ voiceover by nina. What nina can't do a voiceover? It's easy money. 5. (Another doppel theory) damon has a twin. A Gemini twin. DE leave the twin comes and season 7 is about stefan getting to know his twin bro with phone calls and maybe even visits from damon. (OTH had Peyton and Lucas phone calls) These are easily done options but they won't do it. They'd rather destroy the show by putting their foot up their own a$$es and pretend like we are all morons and just watch Damon because he's so hot and who cares about the content right? Just make Ian Naked season 7. If that's the case I'll just watch him naked on YouTube. There's no reason to sit through elementary writings and over the hill and far away mythology that seems even far fetched in the world of fantasy. There is no way that I'm watching. I'm a DE who is pissssed! Im not an Elena Stan. I'm not a Damon Stan. I'm a DE shipper who loves damon because of the way Elena and his love for her evolved him into an admirable man. Without that element..... Game over for me. Also it does irk me how they took her essence this season and made her this empty shell. Let's downgrade our female lead and take away the reason vamperisim is even remotely worth living for her. Let's have her bat her lashes, give long empty stares and soft spoken speeches. thats sad to me. Poor Elena stans. Btw I wrote this on the phone so don't expect a grammatically decent essay!

I posted it mainly for the tweets about the Chicago con that I thought interesting. If those tweets are being truthful/accurate well there certain things said that made me go, 'Huh? Well... okay.' Obviously some posts on that tumblr go more into characters than the writing but the one about the con peaked my curiosity. There were some points I agreed with and some that were like, 'Eh...' it depends on your person. Though there are lots of angry Damon, Elena, and Delena fans in general, it goes both ways, I've read all sorts of rants by Damon stans alike (Which I think I posted some in the DE thread as well, don't remember) but I've just now begun to remember this thread existed and these are the most recent 'rants' that have popped up on my dash. My first one Lovesyofromtheground up has posted TONS about this show that I've agreed with and she isn't a 'stan' for either character, just expects decent writing that she's given up on since season 4. I've myself have had plenty of rants about the show's writing plastered all over this board so reposting all those here is a bit too much but I'll certainly have more rants to make up for it in the coming eps no doubt. A debate can be made if someone wants but I'll probably stick here where I can just rant. I've had my fill of debates from that Elena's love changing Damon thread and its more tiring than anything and I don't want to get into all the real cast drama with Nina and everyone and who did what/made who leave etc. since all we can do is speculate and assume but never really know the truth on set.

Not one character on this show hasn't done all the same things but Elena (and Damon) are measured with a different measuring stick and always have been, but I guess that's how it goes when you're at the top of the dogpile! I agree that the writing stinks but I haven't given up hope that they can pull something acceptable out of their butts that keeps us happy enough to keep watching. I think it's premature to rant about the end of Delena when we don't know yet what is really going to happen. I would go for all the same scenarios as Sweetluv mentioned above, even if it was a different Elena because Nina is gone. I could live with it, but I can't live with a horrible ending to Delena and Damon just moving on with someone else and worst of all Bonnie, because I don't like her.

I think maybe this should be more of an anti-TVD writers, actors and network thread. I am pretty shocked by the ChicagoCon stuff. I had seen it around in bits and pieces -- something like Ian said it would be a cold day in hell before he works with another doggleganger. I don't understand what that means since Stefan is one, but he obviously isn't referring to Stefan. I'm no Nina fan but Elena is the damn lead of the show and whether it is the writers, actors or network, the character of Elena was shorted in the second half of the season. Reading the ChicagoCon talk makes me think they not only sidelined her on purpose but they wrote her sh@tty, thinking that we would dismiss her that way. I'm a fan who is not going to stop watching until they force me to. Shouldn't the head writer love her lead character and want to give her a decent ending? All this retcon right now makes me think JP/CD are really angry at ND or really outside their element.

I ranted in the DE spoiler thread that I could not believe Elena would imagine she would be a doctor but Damon be a bartender. I spent 5 minutes thinking about it and would have written this: Elena: "What would you be doing? Would you be on Wall Street, Madison Avenue or in a nondescript building somewhere as a spy, or maybe a private detective? Damon: I guess I'd have to decide on a career. Kids? Elena: With your genes? Hell ya, eventually. Damon: So you just love me for my looks? Elena: And your skills. That's it -- you could be my boy toy!
It's cheesy, it's bad writing, but it could have been flirty and fun and it is still (in my mind) better than bartender. Makes me think they are purposely writing Elena as a dimwit and trying to turn us against her.

I've said before now I don't like the writers since Kevin left but overall they seem to make characters OOC for ships or forget their own rules and logic like "Older = stronger" means NOTHING anymore. The way Vervain goes from slight burn to full kryptonite depending on plot is dumb. But some inconsistency I can forgive I mean I do read comics lol but the amount on this is silly
However i cant fully hate them either. Like season 6 was bad bad bad bad but then christmas episode was soooo good. It shows they can do good storytelling and great episodes but choose not too. So it's not they suck but it's that doc ock quote about peter parker in Spider-man 2 "Brilliant but lazy" so i'm still a fan but i wish they'd try more

Always Remember.
Don’t hate the ships. Don’t hate the characters. Don’t hate the characters in the ships. Don’t hate poor character development. Don’t hate useless characters.
JUST HATE THE WRITERS!
I've kind of have already adopted this way of viewing things. I once use to say things like, 'I hope Elena/Damon doesn't do/this that.' but now I say, 'I hope the writers don't make Elena/Damon do/this that.'
I'm completely disconnected from the show now, as in I no longer see actions as the characters anymore but the people behind them, the writers. So yes fourth wall broken but terrible writing and having to accept so many random/awkward things as canon because the writers wrote them that way makes me no longer feel invested as I use to in the growth/development of these characters cause you never knew when the writers would retcon something for plot convenience or unnecessary baiting and drama.
Characters like Matt or Tyler that the fandom calls useless are only that way cause the writers just flat out don't do squat with them. All of these characters have potential but instead JP and co. constantly brings in new guest stars all the time instead of working with the cast they already have.

All this retcon right now makes me think JP/CD are really angry at ND or really outside their element. Yeah I agree some of the stuff said at the Con was surprising to say the least. Obviously we'd all love to think the actors have fun being their characters and having fun in the show as much as we love watching it, we love to think of the cast as one big happy family who crack jokes off set. No doubt that's how it once was before but certainly not now.
Though this goes back to the writing of the show in general. Would any actor complain about a role if the material was fun, innovative, engaging and an all around challenge? Of course not. It's no secret that Paul hates his role as Stefan, it's been stated he loves playing the bad guys, heck he auditioned to play Damon's role at first. Ian's stated in many interviews how Damon would go 'dark again' or we'd get a glimpse of the season 1 Damon. Most of the time that doesn't pan out or it's like one episode of drama to be back to the daily soap opera.
There's really such a great disconnect between the actors and JP as far as what they would expect of their characters. Every interview I've seen, every time Paul, Ian, or Candice says something of what they'd expect of their characters it doesn't pan out that way lol. It's happened to Candice twice in regards to both Klaroline and Steroline. Paul felt that there was no way Stefan would have left Elena to drown just because 'it was her choice' and JP fought him on that notion. And of course Ian who wants to be able to go back to the season 1 days of Damon. It was always obvious he felt Damon was a bit soft/whipped but those tweets put it out in the open even more than before if there was any doubts.
I mean I know JP can't just agree to every single suggestion that's thrown at her but it really feels like in the end JP gets the last say on how a storyline goes. If you've ever watched one of those director cut episode things. Even though both Caroline Dries and JP are sitting in their chair, it's usually JP talking the most with Caroline just sitting there, staring off into the distance and shaking her head. She may get like one line or so but it certainly doesn't feel like a collective effort. I mean I refuse to believe that a room full of professional writers can make this many goofs as far as the inconsistencies in this show goes.

A recurring cast member has managed to star in more episodes than a main cast member because that makes a lot of sense lol. That gap is likely to get bigger cause we at least know Jo has an upcoming wedding and we have no idea what the heck Tyler is even doing, he doesn't really have a storyline right now.
Main cast Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert (19 episodes) Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore (19 episodes) Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore (19 episodes) Kat Graham as Bonnie Bennett (14 episodes) Candice Accola as Caroline Forbes (17 episodes) Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy Gilbert (10 episodes) Zach Roerig as Matt Donovan (14 episodes) Michael Trevino as Tyler Lockwood (12 episodes) Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman (14 episodes) Michael Malarkey as Enzo (14 episodes)
Recurring cast Jodi Lyn O'Keefe as Jo Laughlin (né Parker) (14 episodes) Chris Wood as Kai Parker (13 episodes) Penelope Mitchell as Liv Parker (10 episodes) Marguerite MacIntyre as Liz Forbes (9 episodes) Colin Ferguson as Tripp Cooke (né Fell) (7 episodes) Chris Brochu as Luke Parker (7 episodes) Emily Chang as Ivy (6 episodes) Gabrielle Walsh as Monique (6 episodes) Marco James as Liam Davis (6 episodes) Tristin Mays as Sarah Nelson (6 episodes) Annie Wersching as Lily Salvatore (4 episodes)

Tyler yeah .... he's been useless ever since his werewolf arc was over in season 2+3 Matt however I like matt lol This season I love hows he's growing to hate vampires and hope somethings coming from it but before this season. He had an important use. He was the human. Even when Jeremy was not a hunter he was not "human character" he was "Elena's brother" which makes sense. Matt I feel is the one normal character and I feel it'll be a sad day if he ever gets powers as the show will loose something. But Matt is the face of the normal people. Dude works an average job in an average way and just wants his life normal. THAT makes him to me one of the most interesting characters. Why/ Incredibles logic When Elena became a vampire and Jeremy a hunter , Everyone was super. So the fact matt isnt makes him just so much interesting. Yes now Tyler is and Alaraic but both are dating witches and were previously Super Vampire beyond god (boom met my quota of anime references lol ) Matt is not a vampire , Matt works minimum wage to pay bills , Matt sees how flawed the vampires are matt ....... Matt's all of us!

Actually Matt's always had a hate vampires/supernatural conflict since season 2 and one of the reasons why he couldn't fully love Caroline after she turned in the midst of them dating. If he had suddenly grown to hate vampires this season, I'd be right here in this thread ranting about it lol. But yeah his anti vampire attitude makes sense and the one thing the writers had actually had hints of from previous seasons so that's one thing I can pat them on the back for.
Though I agree with what you said about Matt being the 'human' amongst the supes and how the fandom has seen him over the seasons. I think we don't have to worry about him being turned or something. I think if anything we should be fearful of anything, it's if these writers outright kill him off. He's had so many 'close' encounters over the seasons and you go, 'Well he's the human character they wouldn't-' but Liz also had the 'Well she's the last parent amongst the gang they wouldn't-' and here we are lol. Even more so she was the sheriff and really our source of information to what was going around in the town as far as the supernatural aspect of the world, informing us of another 'animal attack' or whatever.
I got why Tyler's mom was killed off since the actual actor was moving and whatnot but not sure if Liz's actor had a similar scenario. Unless of course they just killed her for Steroline points.
But yeah I thought when Tyler was going to turn human, that the writers would do something with that. Show his relief with no longer having to deal with all those 'werewolf problems' and then some drama would happen and he'd have to choose whether he wants to stay a human or turn back into a werewolf to save his friends and stuff. But of course it's just easier for the writer's to drop his character altogether it seems lol.
In fact it almost feels like they did that on purpose so they no longer have to deal with the werewolf stuff. Tyler's a werewolf, okay now we have to make sure we remember to mention the 'full moon' every month (as far as in-verse timeline went). Now we have to show Tyler getting angrier, now we have to dedicate part of an episode to him chaining himself up. Whew that's over. You know this is a thing every month right? Oh crap! You know what lets just turn him into a hybrid, there! Now he can control his turning. But he's still part werewolf. We still have to do the werewolf effects when he fights you can't use the same set of teeth you use for your vampires you know. You know what let's just turn him back human and be done with it lol.
Yeah I don't know lol but it does seem obvious they didn't know what to do with Tyler since he constantly had periods where he'd disappear for five episodes on end without a mention.
