I'm loving this thread already! I don't know if this is my favorite moment of season 1 DE but it is in the top 3 or so: When Damon threatens Elena at the tomb after SE went behind Damon's back to steal the witch's cookbook. So many opposite dynamics going on here: Damon threatens to turn Elena, but then says"And then you and I will have a vampire girlfriend." WTH?, I thought. Why does Damon want her for a gf? What must be going through HER mind, being afraid for her life and knowing Damon is more powerful than Stefan and yet, what a time to acknowledge all this underlying tension and interest between DE. And then he SMELLS her hair, strokes her hair ... and then gently loosens himself from her so she can run to Stefan, like he doesn't want her to be afraid even as he was the very reason she was afraid. Elena wasn't so sure though. He was hurt that she lied to him when he had point blank asked her if he could trust Stefan so he wasn't going to hold back on threatening her but at the same time probably never got to hold her so close and smell her hair, etc. In a way it's oddly a sweet scene between them. |

Passion/anger they're close emotions right?! I think they're in a better place. I'm working my way through Season1 & noticing a lot of things I didn't the 1st time round...:0) loving the DE friendship/beginning to care scenes <3 Yeah, they really took their time with DE and were very thorough. I think if the fans weren't getting restless they would have put it off at least until late season 5, but they lost a chunk of the fanbase after 3x22 and more were slowly dwindling away during season 4 so I think they felt like they had to speed up DE some. It really WAS taking too long. Now that it's here it doesn't seem so bad but isn't that always the way? What gets me is reading SEs saying that DE was contrived and 'came out of thin air' and I'm thinking, did you fast forward through all the DE or what? How could they think such a thing? There is SO much DE and such careful planning and plot as they work their way toward each other that it isn't even funny. Whereas we had Stelena together by episode 2 and having sex by episode 10. There was no build up or foundation to that relationship happening. It was just there for all that time and nothing ever changed except to start going downhill in seasons 3 and 4. That was the contrived relationship of the two of them. I don't even really get how anyone could care about them when there was no build up at all to it and no depth. I never did. 1st time round I was like ~ oooerrr SE! Cos I wasn't fully sure I was Team Damon til the end of Season1...(I feel a bit of a traitor, shoot me now!) lol...I just watched their road trip to Georgia ~ such cute scenes in the bar & a awwww kind of discussion on the way home when Elena says "I saved your life!" :0) Damon's all like "I know!" (love love love the way he says that!) ;0) I can see why fans were dropping during Season4 if I'm honest, it seemed a bit stale & stagnant to me...it was all "cure this" "cure that" & I got bored of hearing about the cure every 5 seconds...but I persevered and I'm glad that I did cos we got our DE together yay!!! |

Yeah, they really took their time with DE and were very thorough. You're not the only one. Alot of people jumped the SE ship once they realized it only sailed in shallow waters. I read a quote somewhere earlier that said Stefan is Elena's safe harbour & Damon is her ocean ~ but ships aren't meant to stay in the harbour forever, their home is out at sea! :0) Yeah and as I recall the quote came from Nancy Forner, the editor that edited 3x19 and she's a DE fan. She, of course edited in the song so I have to wonder if she got this ocean idea directly from the TVD staff. Really love this thread and enjoying everyone's answers. I would have to say the most heartbreaking moment was this vid. It allowed us to see into Damon's soul. I wanted him to do the right thing and let her go, I wanted it in the worst way, and I'm not even sure now why he didn't. I'm sure it gave the SE's a lot of joy to see Damon as the monster his brother made him out to be. In some ways though it was turning point for Damon too, he knew that he felt, that he didn't want to feel the pain of caring again but he just couldn't turn it off anymore.
If nothing else good came of this .... at least we got the lovely shower scene that followed. reoooowww!

He just wants to save Katherine and he has been betrayed by Stefan and Elena. His heart is breaking and he somehow makes his seperation from Elena romantic and sweet. Who could not have loved the man after that? Oh man the SE's tore Damon a new one for this one!!!!!!!!!! I'm LIKE HELLO PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! he is a vampire!!!! WTH! Seriously I don't know why someone would sit down to watch a show about vampires then bitch and complain when they act like one? Exactly! Some people eh?! Haven't watched this scene in some time! but WOW it just gave me goosebumps! Ian is such a marvellous actor, I truly believe that where Ian stops & Damon starts is a blur & that's what makes it so fantastic! It's absolutely believable, whereas if that had been Stefan's scene it wouldn't have been half as powerful! Like Iansfan said, you can see right into Damon's "soul". He's a contradiction in himself ~ he misses being human yet deep down knows he wouldn't change being a vampire (& actually embraces being one)...he can't be who Elena "wants him to be" & than pains him greatly but on the flip side he knows he's acting in exactly the way he should do...Damon is being himself yet somehow he knows that's not quite enough for Elena (at this moment in time) but knows he can't be anything different otherwise that would be being untrue to himself (& acting like Stefan does)...he's true, he doesn't lie about his true nature & try cover stuff up because I think he's an honest character even if his "honesty" hurts people from time to time ~ this makes him the absolute best choice (even back at this point in time) because although he's clearly troubled he never claimed to be anything different from how he's been the whole time up to that point! He's "feeling" & "caring", these emotions are probably screwing him up because he thinks vampires shouldn't be in tune with those emotions, Elena's brought out a conflict in him and we can see that clearly in that one scene! I think it's beautiful as well as heart breaking to watch! |

Damon got used to flipping that switch so he wouldn't feel anything about killing people but at this point in time he wanted to try to be different for Elena. We see how he thinks in the scene right after Elena tries to light herself on fire and he says, "You feed. You kill. You do all the awful things that a vampire does and then when you're done, you turn it back on." So, that was how Damon operated and for all the SEs out there claiming Damon didn't have his switch off when he was doing those things, I offer up that scene as evidence that they are wrong. They use that as an excuse for Stefan but never excuse Damon for the exact same things, actually lesser things since Stefan turns into a ripper with his switch off. I wish in the ripper storyline they wouldn't have shied away from showing us the true horror that he was, but I digress. Damon did find a middle ground in which he was comfortable with himself. He didn't act like a pseudo human like I believe Elena wanted him to for a while there and he told her he was still a vampire and he wasn't Stefan and she should stop trying to turn him into him. That scene with Bill was also very important in their relationship for her to come to terms with who he was and who he wasn't and would never be, not even for her. |

Most heartbreaking moment?? I know that this question on the 1st page was asked in a DE related context but I found this post on Tumblr that sums up pretty much how I feel about heartbreaking moments... damonsalvahoar.tumblr.com/tagged/ds4aw"I didn’t have one specific moment for this one, but when Damon hurts you really do hurt with him. Ian is that kind of phenomenal actor who can so clearly visualise and show every single emotion Damon is experiencing through his face and his eyes. It’s such a stark contrast to the usual casual smirks and sarcastic mask Damon puts up as a front that it just makes my heart ache for him.
These are some of the many moments when Damon has voiced aloud his own insecurities and fears and mistakes. Because there is no one more aware of his faults and flaws than Damon Salvatore. No matter what any of the other characters do or say, there’s no one who’s harder on himself than Damon is –– he’s just better at hiding it. The fact that he’s always going to be second best, or even last, always the one that isn’t chosen haunts him and he knows full well that he might not and ever be enough for Elena or anyone to love him. He’s always going to be seen as the bad guy, the villain, the asshole that makes all the bad choices and says all the wrong things.
But the greatest thing about Damon is that he never attempts to hide or deny these things. He accepts the way he is, even embraces it, he wears his heart and his mistakes on his sleeve. Even if it means letting other people think the worst of him or hate him, he’ll do what’s necessary to keep the ones he loves alive and safe. He does what needs to be done because no one else will do it. For a man with so many trust issues and such a strong belief of his own inferiority and inadequacy, it is his capacity to get through it all that always amazes me. Because you can beat down Damon Salvatore as many times as you want but he will always get up, no matter what, and keep on going with a smirk on his face and something snarky to say."There probably is a heartbreaking DE related moment that I will post about given time but most of the time if Damon is hurting then I'm sad too...all it takes is a heart broken face from Damon and my bottom lip wobbles...  I do get over emotional when it comes to TVD...I get a bit involved with what is going on and I truly believe Damon is really going through whatever is happening (I forget they're TV characters lol!)...that is proof enough that Ian's acting skills are just absolutely amazing!!! |
