Could The Vampire Diaries Be Ending? Or Go on Without Nina, Ian or Paul?
The Vampire Diaries' days may be numbered—if one of the show's main stars doesn't come around. The core TVD trio—Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley—have been in talks with the studio, and so far, only two of the three actors have signed on for a seventh season, E! News has learned. The remaining star (either Nina, Ian or Paul) is unsure whether he or she wants to continue, according to multiple inside sources familiar with the talks. (Warner Bros. does not comment on contract negotiations.) The Vampire Diaries, which launches its sixth season Oct. 1, has been a hugely successful series for the CW, giving the fledgling network in 2009 its highest-rated premiere ever (5.7 million viewers). Season five averaged more than 2 million viewers, which is still pretty strong by CW standards. "I think the show will go as long as the actors want the show to go," TVD executive producer Julie Plec said during our Comic-Con interview a few weeks ago (see the video below). "You know, look, everybody's under contract. I know that we've got plans for season six, we've got plans for season seven. I know that our bosses have plans for seasons eight, nine, and 10. I said I want to be part of it as long as I know I could keep telling good stories and as long as the ensemble people that I work with want to be there and are committed and dedicated. So, so far so good, you know. We'll see how long we can stay, doing it well. We'll make sure that we don't start sucking." Plec also revealed that the idea she and Kevin Williamson came up with four years ago for the very last scene of the entire series could still come to fruition. If all three main actors (Nina, Ian and Paul) were to sign on for a season seven, the show would have a good shot at a seventh season pickup. We also hear it's possible that the network would consider continuing the show without all three stars, shifting the focus to some of the other beloved characters. uk.eonline.com/news/569423/could-the-vampire-diaries-be-ending-or-go-on-without-nina-ian-or-paul?cmpid=sn-000000-twitterfeed-365-kristin&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=twitterfeed_kristin&dlvrit=51396

Ian...of all of them he has dropped the most hints that he thinks this is his last year...talking about not being at awards shows in the future, pushing Delena away in favor of Bamon, the setup of having Damon be 'dead' and the ease of never getting him back to the 'living' should he not sign. JP keeping Enzo and Alaric to try to fill in the hole Damon would leave. The only real reason I think he MIGHT still sign is to help finance his sanctuary which he has now personally financially guaranteed and he'll need an income to back those loans up, so that might get him to reconsider signing for at least one more year.
If he doesn't stay though I think TVD will die but the CW will keep it on air at least until the end of season 7 anyway. For some reason they think it can survive without Ian! HA!

I have a sneaky feeling that it is actually Nina. At the cons Ian and Paul sounded very happy about this new season, but Nina was not as up beat. So I think that Ian and Paul may have already signed for S7. Like JP said it is going to be up to the actors if they want to stay on, because the network is happy for TVD to continue for as long as possible. The scriptwriters have material for 10 seaseons and WB stated the show could run for up to 17 seasons. If Ian goes, the show ends, but if Ian and Paul stay, the show can survive although some of the dynamics will change.

Yeah you never know...Ian does have that foundation to support and that's the most important thing to him. And the show guarantees them a job for as long as they want it.....

I will say if Nina goes I'd breathe a sigh of relief. They could find a look alike and I'd be fine with it! Maybe Elena would change magically or something...hey how bout Nikki Reed? As far as Paul goes...he can go...forever. But if Ian leaves the show so do I.

What is interesting.......... is a few weeks back on his instagram, Ian posted a photos of himself, Nina and Paul, but they were old, and he posted would you still watch. Everyone that replied said yes......
But I think the key is if Ian and Nina stay, the show survivies, if Ian and Paul stay the show survives, but if Nina and Paul stay, then the show without Ian wont survive. I'll even stick my neck out and say even if it is just Ian, the show will be okay, because Damon is one of the main reason people watch so it just requires a rewriting to include the dynamics of the remaining characters.

I would be really sad if the story doesn't end with Delena, but if it goes on without any of them, I will keep watching as long as Ian is there.

Well both Nina and Paul have said recently that they'd stay as long as the fans want them, I read, but Ian has said this may be his last season...so the odds are on Ian. However...imagine this:
Defan36 minutes ago+4 Can you imagine how awesome the show would be with flashbacks and stories revolving around the brothers! I would watch that for sure!

I've made that clear for quite some time. I do want Delena as the end game, a really happy Delena...but if I can't have that, I'd want Elena out of the picture entirely so I could move on with Damon away from that relationship.

Finally some fun debate before the season starts. I can see all three of them wanting to leave the show for various reasons, but wanting the paycheck to continue. Ian has already experienced the downside of a character being killed off on Lost. in a Larry King interview, he sounded like he thought he would get a new gig right away but instead disappeared. Based on that, and the fact that Damon is a great character to play, I can see him staying. Also, if The Anomoly is indicative of the side roles he is getting, he better stay with TVD, even if he has to keep acting with his ex-girlfriend. Paul seems bored with his character in TVD but it's the only real recurring role he has ever had so I don't see him leaving. (And maybe with another two or more seasons they could finally write his character better.) I can see Nina wanting to leave. Her small movie roles are at least with known actors and decent production budgets. However, I don't see her making the jump to the big screen as a leading lady. There are simply too many pretty starlets out there and new ones coming up all the time.

I have assumed Ian's comments hinting at his last season have more to do with negotiating a bigger salary because he simply is the show. Obviously Alaric and Enzo were brought back to counter in case Ian didn't sign on for a seventh season. But Ian is crucial to the show and the producers know it. If Nina left, it would be fun to see that reboot. You shouldn't want your leading lady to go but they could have some great new story lines if that were the case. Paul could leave and while I think he has a steady fan base, there are a number of men on the show to fill in his spot.

I still think Ian is the only bankable actor on that show. The trouble is he never has time to do other projects so he squeezes in whatever he can during hiatus which is never a big production because there just isn't time. I don't think it's because nobody wants to hire him for a big role. After LOST he thought he could take his time and do some artsy stuff and broadway, and he did, but that made him lose the momentum he would have had as a LOST actor and he found it hard to land a good role after he took that time to do what he wanted to do. That's what he was referring to. I think this time around he'd go right into another series or sign for a decent movie asap and not make that mistake of letting his stardom drop off the face of the earth like he did before. He said he thought he could be Johnny Depp with his artistic choices but nope! Everyone forgot who he was...he didn't have the star power to pick up where he left off...yet.
Another problem for all of them is that they are in Atlanta and not being in LA is problematic for them for exposure as well as hob nobbing with the right people for those next jobs. They are far away from Hollywood and the paps and all week long they just disappear which is great for their personal lives but not so great for their careers.
As far as salary goes, that's his agent's job to determine what he's worth but I sure as heck would hope he's asking for a lot more than he was getting which was roughly $50,000 an episode (still more than Paul or Nina but hardly a large salary for how popular he is!). He's definitely proven how invaluable he is to the show. In the meantime I hope he's looking for his next big gig and lands a juicy part we can all enjoy seeing him in. Whatever works out best for him. I guess I'll have to live with it if it's his last season, but I won't be watching TVD without him for sure.

I would love to see Ian in some kind of serial movies, like Sahara, which starred Matthew Mccannehey (no clue how to spell that), which was based on Clive Cussler adventure books. Ian is bankable artist with large fan base. Basically I'd like to see him on big screen in a human role that would require a lot of Damon personality.

There is some talk about Ian playing Gideon Cross in the Crossfire series that is supposed to be made into a TV show or movie. The rights were bought last year and the character is one that people say he would play perfectly. I haven't read the books myself but this certainly does sound a lot like Ian. If it was on HBO or Showtime...bonus!:
“I had never seen hair that purely black. It was glossy and slightly long, the ends drifting over his collar. That sexy length was the crowning touch of bad boy hotness over the successful businessman, like whipped cream topping on a hot fudge brownie sundae. As my mother would say, only rogues and raiders had hair like that."
And how about this:
"Inky black hair framed a breathtaking face. His bone structure would make a sculptor weep with joy, while a firmly etched mouth, a blade of a nose, and intensely blue eyes made him savagely gorgeous. Those eyes narrowed slightly, his features otherwise schooled into impassivity.
His dress shirt and suit were both black, but his tie perfectly matched those brilliant irises. His eyes were shrewd and assessing, and they bored into me. My heartbeat quickened; my lips parted to accommodate faster breaths. He smelled sinfully good. Not cologne. Body wash, maybe. Or shampoo. Whatever it was, it was mouthwatering, as was he.
He held out a hand to me, exposing onyx cuff links and a very expensive-looking watch.
With a shaky inhalation, I placed my hand in his. My pulse leaped when his grip tightened. His touch was electric, sending a shock up my arm that raised the hairs on my nape. He didn’t move for a moment, a frown line marring the space between arrogantly slashed brows.
“Are you all right?”
His voice was cultured and smooth, with a rasp that made my stomach flutter. It brought sex to mind. Extraordinary sex. I thought for a moment that he might be able to make me orgasm just by talking long enough.
My lips were dry, so I licked them before answering. “I’m fine.”
He stood with economical grace, pulling me up with him. We maintained eye contact because I was unable to look away. He was younger than I’d assumed at first. Younger than thirty would be my guess, but his eyes were much worldlier. Hard and sharply intelligent.
I felt drawn to him, as if a rope bound my waist and he were slowly, inexorably pulling it.
Blinking out of my semidaze, I released him. He wasn’t just beautiful; he was . . . enthralling. He was the kind of guy that made a woman want to rip his shirt open and watch the buttons scatter along with her inhibitions. I looked at him in his civilized, urbane, outrageously expensive suit and thought of raw, primal, sheet-clawing f*cking."
