You're totally right. That was mainly so we would think that Bonnie's heart stopping brought Elena back and they could do the fake reunion. What a load of bull. Well, I will say that that scene gave context to the later Stelena scene at the school and Delena scene in the cemetery. Bonnie's heart stopped and she was able to visit Elena in the limbo between life and death. Then Stefan did the same after he died. Then when Elena died, she met up with Damon who was waiting for her in that same limbo so they could move into the afterlife together. True, but do we really need confirmation that there is a limbo of some sort? They've been doing that forever. Enzo has been in limbo for the past few episodes. I still didn't understand Stefan was dead until he did the flashback to what happened, so it did nothing to reveal that he was in limbo too. The whole thing was just a blur of who's in limbo - dead, alive, in MF, in hell, Bonnie's world, I didn't know up from down, and it took some thinking after the whole episode was over to piece it all together. Just poorly executed IMO.

really? You would prefer Steroline ending? I mean not only Stefan died, but also - they would probably not reunite in afterlife because Caroline is a vampire, AND they haven't even shown Caroline as that much devastated - I mean she was basically smiling at Stefan's memorial (just compare it to Elena in 5x22 and 6x01). AND they heavily implied Klaroline in the very same episode Stefan died, just few minutes after that. Delena GOT the proposal, 6x21 covered it pretty well AND Damon turn human to be with Elena, it's more than wedding TBH. I understand feeling disapointed (especially those of you who stand by the show for the last two years - I watched only two episodes), but honestly DE got no doubt the best ending out of all romantic ships in the show. The rest was just destroyed in one episode - LOL. At the end of the day - Nina saved us. I don't really believe in this bulls*** about coming back to SE if she hadn't left (it really sound like consolation prize and damage control), but I'm 100% sure that going through Ian "great: performance in DE scene would be just unsufferable and the writters would be FORCED to break DE up for good. IMHO DE scenes were absolutely off since 5x22. In season 5 there were still a lot of chemistry between them in spite of break up, but season 6 was just awful - it was like watching two completely new characters. Since s6 the best DE happened when only one of them was actually in the scene (like 6x02 or this last season with Damon's love for Elena breaking through). I hated 6x22 goodbye scene, it was just ridiculous and completely not DE-like. But what Ian pulled off in these 3 minutes he had with Nina in series finale SHOULD destroy his career. Not their ending. I meant SC got two official marriage proposal scenes, ring, on one knee, they got to see Caroline in a wedding dress, state vows etc. the whole shebang. While DE had their proposal scene, with a ring, cut like bah thats not important! Thats what im frustrated about, Stefan died yeah, but Steroline was THE romantic pairing of that finale, they carried all the emotional weight. We got the endgame on paper, but not on screen. Its not satisyfing hearing about Damon rebuilding the Gilbert house and the two living there when JP should have shown us. Was Vicki and Katherine more important? Im grateful Delena are alive and endgame but what we got was not worth two seasons of waiting for DE to reunite. They didnt even talk. It feels like a slap in the face to us loyal DE fans. Yup the problem is in the payoff not being equal to the pain we had to endure to get there but it's really not a huge surprise with JP. It probably would have been a bigger surprise if she had given us everything we wanted. The entire series was really like this when I look back at it. She could never really give us what we wanted completely. We got so few moments of real happiness for Delena and then got told it happened off screen like the summer of love. That's how she rolls I guess but it isn't a satisfying end for us.

Let's hope they at least get a mention or two if Caroline winds up on TO

This beautiful.
/video/1
But I will forever be bitter that we didn't get a more scenes in the finale. Steroline and Bonenzo have gotten so many beautiful/epic scenes in the last few episodes. Delena deserved some as well.
I did did think the song was perfect though.

Just poorly executed IMO. I feel the limbo context made sense when Bonnie saw Elena because they're linked together. Stefan showing up magically to Elena in a school setting felt more like for the sake of it. There should be no Other Side anymore, Elena shouldn't be seeing people left and right. Bonnie could slide, Enzo and Stefan was pushing it. I also didn't particularly like that scene as it felt like a huge retcon in itself, Stefan's words about seeing the old Damon and wanting Elena to know him, Elena has already seen those good parts of Damon, and seen him at his worst. She certainly didn't need any reminder or 'blessing' from Stefan. Also Stefan already seen Damon to a big sacrifice, just a few days ago even when he chose to kill himself over Elena/Stefan. As Ritz mentioned before, it felt like KW was written all over that scene with his season 1 mindset. I also agree that the last few minutes just felt like a huge clusterf*ck if you ask me. I had no idea what was going on, whether they were in the present, whether it was a flashforward. Now that graveyard scene was meant to show that Elena was dead and Damon was waiting for her? Even though it was showing the other characters before in their present lives? So we only get a minute scene of DE being alive and the rest is afterlife stuff? I just don't get why JP would go in this direction.

I love this community! Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought meh. My takeaways were that i missed Elena Gilbert and Nina. She really can light up the screen with her smile. Also, I think it's odd that many people (me included) blame Ian for being at least part of the reason we were not fulfilled with DE ending. I don't know anything but I am pissed that Elena got such little screen time and screen time with Damon. That could be all KW. Who knows? In a few years if actors or writers haven't found steady employment, someone is going to write a tell-all book and I am going to read it. For Petes sake, when the star of your epic couple wakes up --especially the star couple who have had so many epic moments in the bedroom, from the moment he brushed her cheek while she was sleeping-- but you decide not to show that and instead give us Bonnie? Smh

Now I am mad, actually. Think about it: he brushed her cheek while she slept and I fell in love with my first ship. End of season, he is dying and she is with him in bed. She likes him just the way he is. Katherine says what we all think: Elena loves him even if she doesn't know it yet. She tries to kill herself as vampire, he saves her. She wakes up and grabs his hand. (And these don't even include the actual sex scenes.) what a waste.

For Petes sake, when the star of your epic couple wakes up --especially the star couple who have had so many epic moments in the bedroom, from the moment he brushed her cheek while she was sleeping-- but you decide not to show that and instead give us Bonnie? Smh It's likely because since the Nian break up, Ian has never been able to separate fiction from reality, he continually bashed Elena and Delena. And the fact that some fans are pointing out how the DE scenes look awkward and giving some anti fans a laugh, saying he looks like he wants to die. We had hoped that Ian would be able to at least put that aside and act with Nina, but he couldn't. I also feel like the hand holding was also a compromise and something that wouldn't be awkward or easier to act or something. DE aren't really seen together as much, they have more separate scenes than anything. It's very telling that Elena only got like 10 min. at the end, yet Katherine had way more screen time and scenes with Damon because he doesn't have to act romantically with her. The one moment that was good was the fake Kat reunion and I'm thinking it happened that way as well because a kiss would have been the next inevitable thing but instead Ian was able to throw Nina out his arms lol. Yes while Ian isn't entirely to blame, since JP and KW cut some scenes like the DE proposal. Our fears about DE being awkward did come to light after all. I think for what it was worth, Bonnie wasn't inherently the problem, this time lol. Just because she's a major character since the beginning and ultimately was needed to vanquish the hell fire plot. The ones who shouldn't have been taking up much screen time was Katherine and Vicki. Katherine had way too much unnecessary scenes with Damon, one that was just an SE bait. I think Katherine would have gloated about them going to burn and then from there count down the minutes on the clock. That would have seemed more fitting for her revenge. We also didn't need to waste so much time arguing with Vicki and the bell and establishing that she couldn't die after she survived the first fall.

Hi guys ... Well, that happened.
Reading everything you guys said, and of course like the rest of you, I am pretty disappointed with that ending on many levels. The whole seasons was really a waste of time. They spent 16 episodes on a storyline that really went nowhere and meant nothing. And then wrapped up everyone's lives in a rushed and jumbled mess at the end. That is just beyond stupid to me. I really can't quite wrap my head around the choices that got made AT ALL. It was idiotic from start to finish.
I will say though, with all the Stefan and Elena crap that got mentioned by JP and KW, honestly in my opinion they were just covering their asses. I think they wanted to make it seem like "oh we meant to do that ..." and that they had some control over their show lol. But the truth is clear, Nina and Ian didn't want to be together any more than was absolutely necessary. They must have made some kind of deal with Nina that she wouldn't have to be around him much if she agreed to come back. And JP and KW are probably just trying to make it seem like it was all part of the plan. Which it obviously wasn't lol.
So anyways, stupid unprofessional actors ruined our love story, plain and simple. Only consolation is that it is canon that they got married and spent a lifetime together. Nothing can change that now.
Only things that I liked: Stefan and Lexi's reunion at the end made me cry, i will admit. I'm glad they had that moment. And Caroline and Damon's scenes together were a relief. FINALLY we are done with the Damon bashing. And Damon making all the right calls this episode was also great. He didn't let his brother die for him. He was forced to, he had no choice. And I'm really glad they did it that way. It would never have been believable if Stefan had just stayed to be the sacrifice in the first place. So I'm glad that's not how it happened. I'm also glad it ended with Stefan acknowledging Damon. Though that really should have been the norm for years now lol. But whatever.
Honestly, one of the things that sucks the most is how little Elena we got in the end. Obviously we all wanted Delena scenes. But I would have been at least happier with getting an Elena-centric episode. She was my star. She was the lead of this story to me from the beginning. I never thought they should have kept the show without her. And if they were going to bring her back for the ending, they should have let her have an episode to be the hero and help save the day. Wasting time with her as Katherine was beyond stupid. If it had been Elena in that whole episode, we could have gotten so much more out of it. Even if Damon and Elena didn't have a lot of scenes together, they could have spoken on the phone or something, so we could have some words of love exchanged at least.
Ok ok, rant ended. We all feel the same so we all know how we feel lol. I'm going to go to the Postmortem now and try to be positive lol.

I agree I feel like there was some sort of deal or the fact that Ian and Nina were so awkward together that they couldn't do anything more than the handholding. It has to be from a romantic sense, it'd be one thing if Elena only showed up at the last ten minutes. But Katherine was there since the second/third major scene and was pretty constant, and it was Nina and Ian acting together. So it comes down to, as long as it wasn't romantic, then it didn't bother them. But you're right, that episode should have had way more Elena that what we got, even if Nina and Ian didn't want to do anything romantic together, it didn't mean Elena had to be side lined to the end. Instead Caroline comes off as more of the heroine and Steroline the main romantic ship that carried that episode. Delena felt like an afterthought and made me feel almost embarrassed with how it was treated. As stated, we got the endgame on paper but not on screen. I wanted this finale to really sell and cement DE's love story but it felt like we got trolled, Damon and Elena didn't even talk to each other. That was just dumb.

Just popping in to add my 2 cents for what it's worth. I have read each and every post and I feel much the same. This was no doubt a Stefan centric finale. Looking back, despite the screentime earlier in the season devoted to Damon and the sirens, the story was still Stefan centric since Damon had no agency in the narrative and no POV aside from the first 2 episodes. Steroline took center stage as THE love story (they had all the DE type angst), Bonenzo were filler full of the endless love declarations that were lovely but got old very quickly so many episodes ago.
It's no surprise given all the pro Stefan/Stelena build up pre finale that DE were going to play second fiddle. Yes we secured the endgame but it came at a price and as far as i'm concerned that price was too damned high. DE were the only couple to get the hea in a true sense of the word but it came at the price of an unsatisfying resolution. It was at best the C story behind Stefan's death and Steroline. No dialogue between them was unforgiveable IMO. Not one single scene depicting how much they missed each other or a final I love you. Steroline got a wedding, they got a goodbye, they got the I love you ad nauseum. They even got Elena reiterating that to Caroline during her minimal screen time. All Elena scenes were tinged with Stefan. Her diary voice over did not really mention Damon except in a tangential way. It just annoyed me how unbalanced the whole finale was in favour of Stefan.
He got the EPIC hero scene, the Epic death scene, the scenes and dialogue with Elena, the reunion with Lexie (and his stupid car), a funeral, a brothers scene, Bonnie scenes and a happy afterlife scene. Stefan got everything and Damon got nothing.
No Camaro, no Dalaric, No Bamon, No dialogue with Elena. Yes he got his HEA but it wasn't enough. Not for me anyway. Damon got to hear yet again how Katherine would never choose him (old news) and Stefan telling him that finally he is worthy of his love because he wants to die. Gee thanks. Damon interacted with no one but Stefan, Elena/Kat. (My mistake and Caroline.) There was no resolution with Tyler, Enzo, Bonnie, Matt, Alaric.....! It just felt weird.
I was annoyed that Elena felt she owed ALL of her happiness to Stefan. No mention of Bonnie at all. I'm not a rabid Bonnie fan but still, it was her who figured out everything and saved MF but of course it's Stefan who earns her gratitude and get the all important mention to appease the SE fanbase. It was Stefan who got to play hero to Elena. He was the one who got to find her in the school and do the bridal carry. It was Stefan who got the 'moments' with Elena.
In hindsight I think I would have flipped the roles. I would rather Damon got the heroes death, got to do the epic goodbye speech to Elena, got the epic friend reunion in death with Liz, Rose and Stefan (eventually complete with the Camaro), finally finding peace with Elena meeting her at the point of her death in the cemetery for an Epic reunion with her and delivering her to her family as was shown before spending an eternity together in death. Might as well have done that since we got no sense of what DE's life as humans together was like anyway.

If I wanted fanfic to fill in the blanks why did I watch the show to the bitter end? I wanted the show to finish what it started with DE in a way that satisfied me and I didn't get that no matter how many interviews they give us to try to fill in the blanks for us now. It was rushed and nonsensical. It was a poor episode and that's unforgivable in a series finale.

I'm still disappointed on the lack of DE in the finale. But I'll make lemonade out of lemons given the fact that DE is endgame, lived a long and happy life together and found peace in the afterlife. I'm fine with that, even if fanfic writers have to fill in the blanks since before the concern was that DE would end tragic, it didn't. It sucks they got sidelined and weren't able to get more from DE and the finale focused more on the season 1 nostalgia, we got KW to thank for that.
But I really doubt that Ian and Nina would have been able to carry the finale and not look as awkward as all get out as they do in the two scenes they got, probably why DE was sidelined in the first place when every other finale DE has always been front and center. I feel like they were given a compromise, just look at the scenes DE got. They had one kiss, which lacked passion and only held hands and gave each other smiles. They didn't even talk to each other.
I thought the pettiness would be over but I guess it was not, it seems like Delena really was doomed the moment Ian and Nina dated each other and broke up as ever since then, the scenes have not been as satisfying as the first seasons. I feel if DE did not have such a big fanbase, DE probably would have just been over and done with. This is just the risk we take when dealing with real life actors who are only human. Actors date and get awkward/hate each other, or get pregnant, or get bored of their character and want to leave.
Fanfics I won't have to deal with Nian awkwardness, but then again I read fanfics when it comes to my shows all the time so it's nothing new to me. For a while DE was the exception as it pretty much had everything going for it in canon, I never felt I had to. Until the unsatisfying DE reunion and skipping out on all of DE's human life. I thought we'd at least get a flashforward about DE's life as humans but instead the flashforward was about them finding peace after they died. I wouldn't have minded that, if we actually got something with DE before then. While DE had great build up and story telling over the course of the show, the ending for them was not worth waiting two seasons for but unfortunately that's it. There will be no more episodes to look forward to. I certainly don't want to be disappointed and frustrated over the scraps DE got forever. There are fans out there who can write it way better, like Eldest Salvatore whose works have been posted in here before, and Delena is still my favorite ship of all time, and I don't plan to just forget them anytime soon and rather look forward to the many fanfics that will come out for years to come. I'm grateful that a human DE spending the rest of their lives together is canon, it's the one good thing to take from this finale regarding DE.

I blame KW for the disappointing finale, and I also blame Ian, who isn't a very good actor if he can't put his personal problems aside, get into character, and gives viewers the finale that they deserved. It was easy to tell Ian was not happy that Nina returned. He made that clear in interviews as well. I guess now that Ian is married, he can't do romantic lead anymore.
