I keep seeing the argument by anti-Delena fans that Elena has changed since dating Damon (and turning). I personally don't see any huge major changes in Elena. We know that everyone changes when they turn to some degree. It was explained to us that they become more of what they are. In Elena's case I think that she was already changing to some degree along the way as she matured into an adult and realized the world isn't all black and white. To me that's a sign of maturity and not a bad thing. Life isn't fair and nothing is easy. These are the sorts of things that I think Elena learned from the hard experiences she has had since this show began and she was still reeling from her parents deaths. I mean think about all the people she has lost now. She's been chased several times for her blood. She's died twice (is it?). Who doesn't change from all of that happening in their life? I would think it would be more unusual if she never changed at all.
If you look at it they've all changed along the way due to the miseries they've had to deal with. Damon was a naïve young man once, too. So when I look at Elena now and compare it to Elena at the beginning of the show, sure there's been some changes, but to me those changes are a result of her life experiences and turning into a vampire. She is certainly not a horrible person. She doesn't like to or want to kill anyone (which is no change). I honestly think these people that claim she's changed in a bad way only think so because she fell out of love with Stefan and into love with Damon and they can make excuses for that by blaming Damon for it, but I'd sure like to see where they get that connection from. Damon never forced Elena to love him. He was her friend and he kept her alive and yes he loved her but he never expected that she'd ever fall in love with him. Too many things have happened to Elena, but at her core she is still the same girl. If anything she's learned to say, 'screw it' and live her life and enjoy her life more rather than drowning in the misery of the all the bad things that have happened to her, because she could do that. She could be miserable, but she chooses not to. That is a change for the better and if Damon had anything to do with her 'attitude' of 'live your life and be happy that you are alive,' then that's a good thing not a bad thing! She is no less caring about her friends. She has grown up! And with growing up comes moving on with your life, having a boyfriend, having a job (or college) and not spending all your time with your childhood friends. None of that means someone changed. It means they grew up!
For me Elena at the beginning of the series was afraid to live. She'd been knocked down by the tragedy of her parents death and she was just trying to cope any way she could. Stefan coming along helped distract her from all of that horrible stuff and it helped her feel better. Stefan helped her at that point in her life but she was still afraid to live or take any chances for fear of failure or loss. It wasn't until she turned that she was willing to take chances again (because I think that she used to be more like she is now-pre show and parents death). The chance she finally took, the leap of faith was to let herself love Damon and I don't know how that is a bad thing. She already loved him for an entire season+. It was just a matter or taking that chance. She couldn't really keep living in that limbo she was in. Stefan knew things had changed even before she was willing to admit it, back in season three. He knew she loved Damon! He knew she loved him before she turned. It was Elena who was afraid to face it until she turned. So Damon didn't change her, not in any bad way. I think he may have helped her to live her life to it's fullest, but to me that is a good change for her.

She definitely changed but I don't think it is a bad change or because of Damon either. I think loving Damon definitely allowed her to open up and live her life. From the moment he took her to Georgia and told her to give him "one day", I think she started to realize she didn't have to put on such a facade for everyone else. I think people also fail to forget she was 16 years old when we met her. Numerous people that she loved died (many right in front of her), and people she barely knew. She has gone through a lot of natural changes that a teenager would go through over the last 2-3 years, multiplied by all of her grief and multiplied again because she turned into a vampire.
Have we also forgotten the fact that vampires are by nature blood thirsty animals? Elena has overall handled it very well (as did Caroline) and aside from the fact that she is a vampire, her humanity and good nature is still there and visible. She still takes care of the people she loves. I don't see that she has changed so much either. Maybe if she went from S1 Elena to having a personality like Katherine then that argument would have a leg to stand on, but she is still a kind-hearted person who loves with all she has.

Well that's not what they say. They say she's selfish now and doesn't care about her friends. I don't believe that. Sure she's made statements that you could call her selfish over like saying Damon was only trying to save Bonnie to get Elena to love him again but if you look at it from her standpoint of where she was and what she remembered, the Damon she 'knew' would not have done anything like that unless he was getting something out of it, basically season one Damon who hadn't grown to love all these MF residents like he has. It wasn't a statement against Bonnie's worth but rather a statement about who she thought Damon was (after her compulsion). I think the problem with some of these people is that they think in too simple of terms for this show sometimes. They take people's words at face value and don't look any deeper for the reasons they say what they say. One thing we can say is that actions speak louder than words, especially on this show. That's been true all along. The show is known for contradicting itself. The writers want us to think deeper than just the words that are being said. They want us to see the contractions and hypocrisies.

I agree with what you said Doppel, most of these fans put it in their mind that this change for the character is bad, and usually I can't even take the argument seriously as it's usually always in the context of fans whining about how they want the 'Old Elena and Stelena back!' and give no reasons as to what they mean by old Elena and I can only assume it's meant as the Elena 'who was in love with Stefan' and now that she's not she's changed and bad and stuff.
It's also a pet peeve of mine when fandoms complain about stuff and bring up double standards. Do these same fans who want Elena to go back to the old Elena also want Caroline to go back to her old self? The insecure girl who always felt inferior to Elena? Or how about Bonnie? Should Bonnie go back to when she was an immense vampire hater? How about the old Matt? Who didn't want anything at all to do with supernatural to the point he shunned his own friends?
Sadly, most arguments like this are made more for the sake of ships and is actually less about the character as a whole. When Elena compelled away her memories of Damon, a webclip that was uploaded just had fans going on and on about how much they 'loved' this Elena and that she was much happier this way when clearly she wasn't. She was not at all into her relationship with that one medical guy (can't remember his name lol) and none of her friends around her were encouraging her or even happy about her decision.
A more recent example is Caroline's character. Her character was always loved and praised when she spoke in context of Stelena and anti Damon, yet now that she's changed her tune for Damon and has romantic feelings for Stefan, parts of the fandom have turned against her and is clamoring about her she's a bad friend and horrible and yada yada.
To get back to Elena though, people who want Elena to go back to the old Elena, which is that exactly? The Elena in season 1 wasn't even really Elena, both she and Caroline made comments on how fun she used to be before her parents died, we got clear glimpses of who Elena was before the season start through flashbacks in 3x22. The one where she met Damon before her parents crashed and the flashback with her mom talking about her on the fence relationship with Matt. In 1x11 we have Elena come out and tell Damon how she used to be more fun so shouldn't that be the 'old Elena'. But I honestly hate saying things like 'old' or 'new' Elena. There's only 'the Elena/Caroline' that I want them to be/act when I see people make claims like that.
Sometimes it feels like a few fans in this fandom are so hellbent on characters going through any kind of development at all, like everyone should be stuck in the season 1 bubble that they started off with. It's just silly lol.

It's like funs get stuck on whatever's presented to them in the first chapter and cry foul when something's changed. As in this girl was introduced with a crush on this guy in the first chapter and she's not allowed to love anyone else or it's bad writing! kind of crap.
Stelena was presented as the first couple of the series and any change from that is written off as the writers catering to fans or something.

It would be pretty boring to have 6+ seasons of nothing changing I'd think. They ought to think about that.

Exactly. If we were still watching the same characters from S1/S2 with no development, then everyone would complain that we were seeing the same old thing over and over again.

Just want to take a minute to say how I love this topic. I hate all of the posts about Elena being selfish, dark, etc., since becoming a vamp and that "true" Elena would once again choose Stefan. It's BS. OF COURSE Elena would step out of the hospital room to give Caroline and Liz a moment alone. She wasn't rushing out to kiss Damon; that was just the normal course of events. Yes, Stefan needs a story line; Yes, Enzo needs a story line. But the ridiculousness of Damon being ******, Elena being selfish and dark is just a bunch of crabby people whose ship didn't take. I've stayed off all forums except this one but find myself tempted to being sucked in to defend those two WRONG theories because they are idiotic. Elena cares about Bonnie, Matt, Caroline, Stefan and all of her friends. They are her family.

It's pretty simple really...Elena loved Damon in 3x01 and the reason she chose Stefan in 3x22 is fear and obligation. She reasoned with herself that Stefan had done so much for her that he deserved her love, especially as they were supposed to be dying and after that she would be free...but Stefan didn't die and Elena turned and had all of eternity to live with her choice. Proof that she wasn't thinking in eternal terms when she chose Stefan was by what she told Damon, "I can't think about always. All I can think about is right now." More proof it was fear that made her not choose Damon is in her own words about being terrified of loving Damon (see pic below). It seems like nobody points this out. We didn't know this then. I mean a lot of us speculated it, but now we know that was the reason. To say it was because of the sire bond or because she became a vampire is just not true and now we've been told it's not true and yet people still go on about how Elena changed. She didn't change! She accepted the truth and decided to live her life again. She got a second chance at living and she wasn't going to waste it on being afraid and living a lie.:

I kind of think about human Elena as a girl afraid to live, afraid of her own shadow really, afraid of disappointing her friends, or doing something her friends wouldn't approve of, a kind of fragile girl who was lost and in pain and reeling from so many deaths in her life and being chased for her blood always on the brink of death herself, and then she did die...she died and when she came back to life she decided she was really going to live the way she was meant to live. She was going to make her own choices and disagree with her friends and do the things that made her feel good and happy. That's how I see Elena and if that means she changed then she changed for the better!
Baring all the weirdness of the sire bond and the humanity switch and all that junk that happened in between, when I look at her now that's what I see, a girl who wants to live her life to its fullest, a girl who knows her mind and what she wants and is going for it. This is NOT the Elena of old, I'll give them that but it is a matured version of herself. Right now she doesn't remember why she chose Damon but she is trusting that her instincts were right when she made that choice and that shows that she now trusts herself and her judgment and she didn't before. That's called character growth and Elena is finally showing it. She is showing that she is a strong woman with a mind of her own and I think it's great, frankly.
This isn't in the context of Damon or Stefan either, this is just about Elena and where she was before and where she is now. The fact that she is willing to stand up for herself and disagree with her friends shows that she trusts her own judgment now, not that she doesn't care about her friends for standing up to them. What would these people have her do, be mind controlled by her friends? How does that equate to a strong powerful heroine? I really don't know what these people are thinking other than their minds are clouded by ships and nothing else. Elena herself said it, "Would you rather I go back to being the scared little girl that couldn't admit what she wanted?" Elena knew what her problem was and that was it!
There were other hints as well like Rebekah saying, “The first rule of truly living — do the thing you’re most afraid of.” This was the theme for Elena's coming of age. I can't even fathom where these people get that how she has changed is a bad thing at all. She's finally an independent thinking woman who chooses life. She is now the heroine she was meant to be. She used to frustrate the hell out of me with her indecision but now I can't wait to see what else they have in store for us with Elena. To me these changes were the natural progression of her character and where it needed to go, not a regression as some would say.

I think she changed. She was the good one the heart. Now Caroline fills that void. The old Elena did stuff like told Damon he had lost him forever when he "killed Jeremy" and got over it but it took time. The old Elena was willing to give her word to elijah or try to reason with Katherine in the cage , Hell she was the first one to see the good in Damon by saying "he's doing it for love" When damon was the villain of season 1
Now she doesn't really seem to care. She let Jeremy kill Kol and kill hundreds or thousands of innocent people as his line will die. And never thought twice about it. That's not Elena. She gave Katherine the cure then didn't care after Katherine died as a result. That's not Elena.
I do not blame Damon persay BUT I do think in order to have Delena the writers had to make them both fit. Damon had to get nicer but not too nice and Elena had to get colder as othewise they would laast past one of damon's outbursts.
It became an issue as you may have noticed I made (i think) an Anti-elena thread and the amount of times watching i hoped the character would die is stupid. Characters change and evolve but normally it's good. Caroline became a better person and stronger. Stefan now tells jokes and has fun but also is a little darker from coming back from his ripper days. Matt as grown annoyed by vampires ****ing his life up and has become bitter. All good changes.
Elena has gone from sweet fun girl to alays talking about herself. That's not a good change. Seriously watch an episode and listen to her dialouge. Like Bonnie is in another realm and Damon is trying to save her and Elena ...... ignores the cause to go off on monologues about her and her feelings growing up ect.. She seems like a selfish and horrible character now as the writers cant decide who she is.
I honestly think the only reason they killed Katherine is they realised Elena is just as selfish now just not as fun and we cant be routing for the evil dopleganger since Elena is meant to be the good one. So they killed Katherine so elena is the good one by defeault. But yeah I really hate her character season 4 to now as she doesnt feel the same at all.

It is the reason she couldn't choose Damon in season 3, couldn't decide what she wanted. I mean she is more like Katherine than we thought basically. As awful as we thought Katherine was, Elena was right there with her for her self centeredness. Sure she could be compassionate and empathetic and she still can, but her overall personality did not change. I think maybe some people missed it or something but I will tell you that season 1 and 2 Elena drove me bonkers and even season 3 Elena with her wishy washiness. That's her character love her or leave her but don't blame anyone else for it and definitely don't blame her vampirism which is said only to amplify what a person already is, I might remind you. I have to give her a bit of a pass for being all of 18 years old and experiencing true grief and loss in her young life. That would have to be so hard and can any of us say we would deal with it better? That's why I don't come down very hard on her. She is realistic for a girl of her age.

To be fair I blamed writers not vampirism. And it was always there but the balance was more equal. Equal compassion to equal selfishness made her great to see. If vampirism really does increase what's there her compassion should not have nearly died out. It's like Tyler season 2 + 3 he was a great character to me. Now he's just there and is so dull. I dont mind more realistic characters but when it comes at the expense of what made the character good then it's not good. If she is "main lead" then the other characters should not be so much better or likeable. Now she just seems like a dull self centred plot device and not a character. And it just bugs me.

I hate to tell ya but that aspect of Elena never changed. She was always self absorbed and if you read the books even moreso. I do know what you mean. One of my first complaints about Elena was that she didn't seem as compassionate as she used to be but that started in season 3 from my perspective and yes, it made her less likeable for sure.
