I have no doubt that Stefan loves Elena. I really don't. I just think he is struggling with who she is now and whether or not he can accept her if she never becomes human again is probably the purpose of the entire storyline with SE right now. Perhaps Stefan's journey will be to overcome his problem with blood once and for all if it's possible and if it's not to be able to give her up for good because he is no longer compatible with her as a vampire that drinks from the vein and that threatens his ability to control the Ripper. So I guess we'll see how that all pans out with them.

I guess when it is a lopsided debate it feels a bit more like anti thread.

Yes I wish we had more SE's around to argue it and maybe throw out some other ideas as to what these two brothers were thinking in that conversation, but Ruby's agreed with you, at least.

Okay my thoughts on Stefan
He came into this season basically feeling like he was to blame for Elena becoming a vampire. Which he did have part in, but many people played a part in it. Rebekah for the crash, Meredith for giving her Damon's blood, Elena for choosing to let Matt be saved first and Stefan for accepting that decision.
He felt awful and he knew his brother would hate him. He would feel responsible for all the torment Elena feels. So now vampire Elena wants to do the diet that Stefan has chosen, but she can't. He know realizes that he can't help her feed the other way. That he does not have control like that how can he teach her?
He support her getting help from his brother who is in love with her. She goes on a trip with him. Stefan now feels inadequate and yes he fears, as anyone would, that he will have a hard time being the person she needs because of his own issues. He fears that Damon his brother may be able to help her more than him. He fears that she may be thinking the same thing. Then Elena comes home and she is horrified by what she is become and he also is than faced with his original guilt of the season the fact that he helped make her this way. That it is his fault. Stefan himself has said that part of him was magnified as a vampire so you can imagine that this is affecting him.
Then he finds out he can fix what he has done to his girlfriend. Make what he did right again. Take away this awful fate. He decides he will do anything thing he can to help her. Help her be the person she wants to be. This last episode showed that. She does not want to be a vampire. When Damon told her she was not why would he want a cure for me? She did not even get mad at him for doing it. She obviously wants it. She just realized and so did Stefan in the last episode that as Elena is now he can't give her what she needs out of him.
It is not that they don't love each other still or that he doesn't want to be with herbut he just can't while she has these feelings for Damon. I mean how is that his fault. He is being man enough to acknowledge it, ask the question, and hear the answer. Then make a decision that he in no way benefits from.
BUT I think Stefan feels like if you love someone you have to let them go do what is best for them and if it is meant to be (which I think it is) when the time is right they will come back together. This time right now is not right for them. Stefan does need to work on himself, too bad he does not have Lexi to help him.

I honestly don't think Lexi's way of doing things helped Stefan in the long run. It was sort of a bandaid approach to his problem. I think Stefan does need to confront it head on like Damon has tried to tell him. I know right now they are not so close with the whole Elena thing going on but that will change again and if he really wants Damon's help he will get it. The show really kind of short changes Stefan when it comes to his character development and in a way if he is apart from Elena for a while he might actually get that development. Who knows?

Whether Lexi did it right is irrelevant because he is alive because she cared enough to try. She saw the good in him. See past the bad parts and help him. She stuck around when others left. So whether or not Damon knew a better way he was too busy blaming him for Katherine and him being what he was to truly care enoughto help him.

At the time Stefan met Lexi, Damon was a new vampire, too and had no idea how to help him and he did ask Lexi to help him, so he cared. Otherwise he would have never said it to begin with.

He knew that he did not have to ask. That she was going to anyway and they met again remember and Damon tried to help Stefan and soon realized it was too over his head when Stefan couldn't stop and ripped that girls head off. Damon was scared off, but not Lexi.

This wasn't the first time Stefan realized that Elena feels something for Damon. So the choice Stefan took isn't majorly due to those feelings. Stefan knows that he can't help Elena with her journey so he let her go. that means that the reason Stefan is searching for the cure is to get the Elena he first knew back not because she can't handle being a vampire. i know that Stefan will always love Elena, but no the same way. that's not my opinion of thick and thin.
i love the fact that Elena turned, this gives her a perspective of how hard vampirism is for both brothers and it will make her spend more time with Damon. so that when and if she's cured, she will have all the facts in front of her.

Hmmm....seems now Stefan has 'run off' to find a cure and isn't helping Elena adapt to being a vampire now. After she rejected animal blood he was at a loss for what he could do to help her. Even in 1912 I don't think Damon knew how to deal with Stefan. He was being mentored by Sage himself at that time and as I recall he was feeding but not getting any enjoyment out of it until he met Sage.
While Damon may blame himself now for not helping Stefan then, I don't think he had all the tools he has now to really be able to help him overcome it, like Stefan doesn't have the tools to help Elena now. Blaming himself doesn't mean he was to blame or that he would have been able to help Stefan overcome it but chose not to. It's come full circle the way I see it. Damon wants to help Stefan and said he would help Stefan but now Elena needs help more having just turned.
Really it's only Stefan that has all this bitterness going on toward Damon now, when TVD started it was Damon who was bitter. Stefan said he didn't think Damon would help him now but he didn't ask, did he and honestly right now Elena needs him more. Stefan's waited 145+ years, he can wait until Elena is stabilized to get Damon's help and I really do hope that happens because it would help to bring them closer together now.

I think it is mopre like Stefan realized she wants Damon's help. That she is trusting Damon more than him. Not that he does not want to help her or is just leaving her to Damon to deal with. Elena wants Damon's help. This is not Stefan's fault. Stefan would have wanted Damon's help. Stefan was not choosing Lexi's help over Damon. The situations are not very comparable imo

I suggest you go back and listen to what Stefan said to Caroline about Elena. He can't be around her and help her feed, therefore he cannot help her. I didn't say he didn't want to help her but that he isn't capable of doing it because of the Ripper. Depsite the talk we haven't seen Caroline helping Stefan with Elena anyway. The 'cure' came up and Stefan went gung ho for that solution.
Meanwhile Elena still needs help and has to feed daily so, of course, Damon is helping her.

I know the scene you are referring to, but he told Caroline an insecurity of his. If Elena was more confident in him and wanted his help and trusted him like she did last season. That he would be able to do anything because of his love for her he would be able to help her. The fact that she is more confident in Damon shows a change in her feelings which she has already acknowledged.

This tumblr post is pretty amazing and pretty much gets to the root of Stelena's problem right now. breakeven-stelena.tumblr.com/post/35912445090/requested-by-breakeven-stelena-do-you-see-howread the post as well as the gif and I think the fact they are both feeling a little unworthy of each other was the writing onthe wall, but this just shows their feelings for each other. That when they become more confident in themselves they can be confident in each other. What is the saying? You have to be happy with yourself before you are happy with someone else?

The fact that she is more confident in Damon shows a change in her feelings which she has already acknowledged. even if Elena had her faith in Stefan , which she had for the first episodes, Stefan isn't capable of helping her. he can't control his own blood lust how is he supposed to help her with hers. her confidence in Damon to help her is not because of her feelings but because Damon has control over himself so he can teach her how.
