I also wanted to edit my previous post I do not think some wanted him to be "damon" bad, I think some wanted him to be worse.... I know that is because of spoilers and info we got about rippers, but I have to reiterate that I love the way they wrote Stefan this season. I think it is very much true to character and the evolution he has gone through as a character past to present.

Here's how I see the whole Katherine thing. I think at that point in time it was pretty clear that Damon was falling/had fallen in love with Elena. However, there was the issue of Katherine and he had loved her for 145 freaking years. I think he wanted to give her another chance, and he did still have feelings for her, but he also had feelings for Elena by that point. So, he offered her another chance and of course we know she rejected him and it hurt him.
But I think that he was already halfway out the door anyway, keeping his growing feelings for Elena in check up to that point. I don't think there was any transfer of his love for Katherine to Elena. It didn't happen on that one specific day that he fell for Elena. His feelings for her had been growing already. By giving Katherine another chance he was able to close the door on that relationship once and for all. I don't think he loves Katherine anymore.
She's certainly given him enough chances to take her up on having something again if he wanted to, but it appears he doesn't. Stefan on the other hand, we don't really know so much about what he feels toward Katherine. He says he hates her. Hate is not the opposite of love, apathy is, which is simply not caring. They're redeeming Katherine for some reason, which I gotta wonder why.

On the Stefan front. Now it does make more sense to me if his fans really have reacted strongly negative toward the ripper storyline taking away his 'goodness.' I personally wanted to see something different out of him, but then I'm not really a Stefan fan am I? I know the writers have changed their intentions based on fan reaction on Damon so I assume they'd do the same with Stefan.

I think that they forced his feeling from Katherine to Elena to quickly. I still am not convinced he is over Katherine. I mean the flashback when he was dieing shows he still is hurt by what she did, which means he still cares. He searched for a way to find Katherine for his whole life and he stopped loving her in an episode and started loving Elena..., just was not very believable to me. I actually thought I might be a multi-shipper until the episode he killed Jeremy. He was willing to be with Katherine, he loved her said he would forgive everything.... she rejects him and he goes straight to Elena and all the sudden loves her... then she rejects him so he kills Jeremy. It just rubbed me the wrong way. From then on I did not believe he stopped loving Katherine. No matter what he does...it just seems like him being hurt not that he is not in love with her. That is all just my opinion. I understand that others may have a very different view of it, but when I was watching it that is what I saw. I disagree with this. I don't think it was a matter of forcing feelings from Katherine to Elena, I don't see it as this at all. I think Damon's feelings for Elena are completely separate from what he felt for Katherine, and I don't think his feelings for Elena happened too soon. I think Damon was falling for Elena at the same time that he was making realizations about Katherine & what she did to him. I agree that he may not have been over Katherine when he began falling for Elena but I don't think that it makes his feelings for Elena any less real. I like that Damon had time to reflect on his relationship with Katherine, deal with those feelings and move on. I like that he got his closure, and that Damon thinks more of himself than to be second best to Katherine ever again. I think it's been made abundantly clear by Damon that he is no longer interested in a romantic relationship with Katherine, with the way he's rejected her multiple times. And he's gotten to a place where he's no longer even bitter about the way she treated him, he's moved so much past her that he's even civil with her now. Telling her to "take care of herself" and such. I see Damon as having completely moved on from Katherine finally once and for all, and has his complete closure. He may still care about her because after loving someone for 145 years, you can't completely stop caring but loving her like he did in 1864 or in the earlier seasons, I don't think so. I think in the season finale Damon's flashbacks of Katherine were supposed to highlight all the mistakes he made as a human and him coming to the realization that the consequences of those actions were not Stefan's fault but his own, I thought the flashbacks actually had very little to do with Katherine herself even though she was featured in them. And in those flashbacks I think it was made clear that Elena was his voice of reason, she appeared in them too. Now when it comes to brothers who might still be holding a torch for Katherine Stefan actually comes to mind. We've yet to see him have any closure on his relationship with her, even though he held on to her picture for decades(if it didn't mean anything he'd of thrown it out). He's denied over and over that he feels anything toward her, but yet we never got to see when & how that happened. Was it before he met Elena? Certainly couldn't have been because Elena's resemblance to Katherine is what drew him to her in the first place. After he met her? It's all still very unclear. If anything I think the writers forced Stefan and Elena before even making it clear whether or not he had moved on from Katherine. Stefan had an opportunity to kill her when she came to MF and began stirring up trouble but he couldn't bring himself to do it. I ask myself why is that? If she threatened Elena's life (who was his gf at the time) and he no longer had feelings for her, why not kill her when he had the chance? Then there was that epic cave dream sequences in S2 where Stefan and Katherine were going at it like animals. It's been shown that when a vampire compels someones dream all their actions are their own. At least that's the way it's been shown for the last two seasons, yet Stefan (albeit in his dream) made out with her, danced with her on one occasion and so on. Is he subconsciously harboring feelings for her? Maybe the writers are trying to send us a message. Then most recently Katherine was the one who could get through to Stefan about turning on his humanity, while Elena begged and pleaded for him to feel something for the sake of their relationship, and he didn't budge. I don't think the Stefan/Katherine chapter is over yet... I don't think the writers would throw away that great potential for a story-line, that they haven't even explored yet. They can't just pretend that Stefan has no past with Katherine, and that he's been all about Elena since the beginning. They'd be doing another disservice to the characters if they didn't.

It kind of goes against the entire idea that compulsion is something you can't fight or stop. Why is he able to do it out of anyone? Plus I would think that a ripper being the worst of the worst would naturally have shut down his own humanity. I suppose it's because he was basically forced to go down this road and it wasn't by choice that he is able to fight it off some. I'm really trying to understand the entire thing because it isn't making sense to me at the moment so your comments are helpful.

I toss those as fast as I can.

Katherine has wanted to have sex with Damon, not show him love. Damon does not want just to be a fling with Katherine. That is just putting salt in the wound. He did not even want to that night until he knew that she wanted to be with him. I just do not think Katherine has given Damon any chances... she has Stefan. She has told him she loves him and Stefan has rejected her every time. He left her in to tomb. When Katherine tells him she loves him and wants him and only him...then we will be able to see if he has no feelings for her... his line to Elena "that was very Katherine of you.... that was a compliment" Honestly the writers have switched this whole thing of Katherine loving Stefan and Stefan only to loving them both... and now they are redeeming her... I wouldn't be surprised if it was because they are going to explore DK a little.

I don't think that Damon "changed" for Elena. I think that Damon was bad and cruel because he was in so much pain from losing Katherine. When he discovered that Katherine wasn't in the tomb and in fact was alive and well, he began to "get over" her and he began to "change" back in to the person he once was before he met Katherine - to a point, after all he is still a vampire.
Sorry I'm not very good with words and I'm not sure if this post really made sense or clearly conveys what I'm thinking.

Sorry I'm not very good with words and I'm not sure if this post really made sense or clearly conveys what I'm thinking. Yes, it wasn't all because of Elena. But I do think a large part of it was only from seeing interviews with Ian where that's basically what he says was Damon's motivation for change and that if it weren't for her he could go back to being just as bad as he was in the beginning very easily. Although I think as time goes on that will become less likely to happen because he's changed internally no matter what, but I could also see it happening should Elena decide against Damon. Damon in pain is not a pretty picture as you said. It's the catalyst that makes him act out.

I guess not forcing feelings or transferring, but in someways he was not getting the love that he wanted from Katherine and Elena had been someone that made him feel better and he had no one to turn to to express how hurt and upset he was so he went to Elena hoping she would give him the love that Katherine was unable to give to him. I am not sure I worded that right either, but yeah, I think we just saw that scene very differently... it is kinda the cool thing about being on forums to see how differently people can interpret the same thing.
